OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of high resolution nerve ultrasound (HRUS)3 and nerve conduction studies (NCS)4 in screening for plexiform neurofibromas (PNs)5 in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).6 METHODS: Adult patients with NF1 were eligible. Patients were divided into two groups: with peripheral nervous system related symptoms (PNS7 group) and without PNS-related symptoms (non-PNS group). Study visit included neurological examination, NCS and HRUS.
RESULTS: Sixty patients were enrolled, 37 in the PNS group and 23 in the non-PNS group. HRUS was abnormal in 52 patients (87 %), 34 in the PNS g

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle knife release with different pathways for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
METHODS: Sixty CTS patients were randomly divided into a transverse group and a longitudinal group, with 30 patients in each group. The transverse group received the needle knife release under ultrasound above and below the median nerve along the short axis, while the longitudinal group received the needle knife release under ultrasound above the median nerve along the long axis. The patients' visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, Levine scores, and me

BACKGROUND/AIM: Critical illness-associated weakness is a common neuromuscular syndrome that may manifest as critical illness myopathy (CIM), critical illness polyneuropathy (CIP), or an overlapping syndrome known as critical illness polyneuromyopathy (CIPM). Distinguishing between these subtypes can be challenging due to technical issues, patient-related factors such as insufficient cooperation with needle electromyography (EMG) or edema, and the need for sophisticated, time-consuming electrophysiological methods and invasive procedures such as biopsy. This study aimed to contribute to the el

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: It is imperative to screen asymptomatic carriers of transthyretin (TTR) mutations to initiate treatment early. The protocol for repeated electrodiagnostic (EDX) assessments over time lacks standardization. Our aim was to report the electrophysiological evolution of a cohort of asymptomatic carriers and to determine which biomarkers were most sensitive to change.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of medical records of asymptomatic carriers identified by screening families with amyloid neuropathy. Carriers who underwent two EDX assessments with a minimum 1-year int

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) mapping has been applied to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) for quantitative assessment of the median nerve. However, quantitative changes in the median nerve before and after surgery using T2 MRI mapping remain unclear. We aimed to investigate whether pathological changes could be identified by pre- and postoperative T2 MRI mapping of the median nerve in CTS patients after open carpal tunnel release.
METHODS: This was a prospective study that measured median nerve T2 and cross-sectional area (CSA) values at the distal carpal tunnel, hamate

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common extra-cardiac manifestations of wild-type transthyretin amyloidosis (wtATTR); however, the characteristics of CTS in this population remain poorly understood.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reports findings from a single-centre experience of comprehensive neurological screening at the time of wtATTR diagnosis by nerve conduction studies (NCS) and neurologist assessment.
RESULTS: Seventy-nine patients underwent neurological screening, 73 (92%) males, mean age 79.2 ± 7.5 years. Seventy-four (94%) had electrodiagnostic

INTRODUCTION: Pure Neural Leprosy (PNL) is a rare clinical form of leprosy in which patients do not present with the classical skin lesions but have a high burden of the disability associated with the disease. Clinical characteristics and follow up of patients in PNL are still poorly described in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe the clinical, electrophysiological and histopathological characteristics of PNL patients, as well as their evolution after multidrug therapy (MDT).
METHODS: Fifty-two PNL patients were selected. Clinical, nerve conduction studies (NCS), histopat

BACKGROUND: Precise placement of stimulating and recording electrodes is vital when performing nerve conduction studies (NCSs). In this study, we aimed to determine whether ultrasonography (US) was more precise in localizing the superficial radial nerve (SRN), dorsal ulnar cutaneous nerve (DUCN), ulnar nerve (UN) crossing the cubital tunnel, and radial nerve (RN) crossing the spiral groove (SG) compared to conventional techniques.
METHODS: Thirty healthy young subjects (15 male) were recruited. Each subject underwent both landmark-based and US-guided NCS. Onset latencies and amplitudes of com

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA 1) is a devastating motor neuron disorder that leads to progressive muscle weakness, respiratory failure and premature death. Although sensory electrophysiological changes have been anecdotally found in pediatric SMA 1 patients, the age of onset of sensory neuropathy remains unknown.
METHODS: Sensory nerve conduction studies of the median and sural nerves were performed in 28 consecutive SMA 1 patients of different ages. Sensory nerve conduction velocities and sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes recorded in these patients wer

To define the skin temperature at which diseased nerves are better differentiated from the healthy. Motor and sensory conduction of median and ulnar nerve were evaluated in 52 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and 52 matched healthy controls at environmental skin temperature (mean 32-33 °C), after warming by an average of 2 °C and cooling to approximately 6 °C below baseline. In the hot condition, group comparisons for the median nerve showed a similar rate of distal motor latency (DML) reduction and sensory conduction velocity (SCV) increase in CTS and controls. With cold, the rate o

The arterial baroreflex has dominant control over multiunit muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) burst occurrence, but whether this extends to all single units or is influenced by resting blood pressure status is unclear. In 22 men (32 ± 8 yr), we assessed 68 MSNA single units during sequential bolus injections of nitroprusside and phenylephrine (modified Oxford). Sympathetic baroreflex sensitivity (sBRS) was quantified as the weighted negative linear regression slope between diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and single-unit spike firing probability and multiple spike firing. Strong negative

BACKGROUND: Muscle herniation is a muscle protrusion through a fascial defect. It is a rarely reported cause of nerve entrapment.
METHODS: We present a case of superficial fibular (peroneal) neuropathy associated with a fibularis (peroneus) brevis muscle herniation and a review of the literature on nerve entrapments secondary to muscle herniation unrelated to compartment syndrome.
RESULTS: Eleven cases of nerve entrapments secondary to muscle herniation were identified. The superficial fibular nerve (SFN) was the most commonly entrapped nerve by fibularis muscle herniation. Patients presente
