Multimodal lexical processing in auditory cortex is literacy skill dependent.

Literacy is a uniquely human cross-modal cognitive process wherein visual orthographic representations become associated with auditory phonological representations through experience. Developmental studies provide insight into how experience-dependent changes in brain organization influence phonological processing as a function of literacy. Previous investigations show a synchrony-dependent influence of letter presentation on individual phoneme processing in superior temporal sulcus; others demonstrate recruitment of primary and associative auditory cortex during cross-modal processing. We sou

Lexical activation during sentence comprehension in adolescents with history of Specific Language Impairment.

UNLABELLED: One remarkable characteristic of speech comprehension in typically developing (TD) children and adults is the speed with which the listener can integrate information across multiple lexical items to anticipate upcoming referents. Although children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) show lexical deficits (Sheng & McGregor, 2010) and slower speed of processing (Leonard et al., 2007), relatively little is known about how these deficits manifest in real-time sentence comprehension. In this study, we examine lexical activation in the comprehension of simple transitive sentences in

Semantic and perceptual processing of number symbols: evidence from a cross-linguistic fMRI adaptation study.

The ability to process the numerical magnitude of sets of items has been characterized in many animal species. Neuroimaging data have associated this ability to represent nonsymbolic numerical magnitudes (e.g., arrays of dots) with activity in the bilateral parietal lobes. Yet the quantitative abilities of humans are not limited to processing the numerical magnitude of nonsymbolic sets. Humans have used this quantitative sense as the foundation for symbolic systems for the representation of numerical magnitude. Although numerical symbol use is widespread in human cultures, the brain regions in

Inferotemporal cortex subserves three-dimensional structure categorization.

We perceive real-world objects as three-dimensional (3D), yet it is unknown which brain area underlies our ability to perceive objects in this way. The macaque inferotemporal (IT) cortex contains neurons that respond selectively to 3D structures defined by binocular disparity. To examine the causal role of IT in the categorization of 3D structures, we electrically stimulated clusters of IT neurons with a similar 3D-structure preference while monkeys performed a 3D-structure categorization task. Microstimulation of 3D-structure-selective IT clusters caused monkeys to choose the preferred struct

Can intervention programs influence how the dyslexic brain processes low-level visual stimuli?

This preliminary study employed event-related potentials (ERPs) to determine the effect of different intervention programs for dyslexia. Two intervention programs were used; the CogniFit Personal Coach (CPC) and the Reading Acceleration Program (RAP). Differences between a small group of dyslexic readers and a control group of regular readers were examined on two visual oddball tasks. The two oddball tasks included a non-alphabetic task and a non-contextual alphabetic one. The amplitude and latency of ERP component P1 is reported here, showing a decrease in amplitude and an increase in latency

Parieto-occipital suppression eliminates implicit bidirectionality in grapheme-colour synaesthesia.

Synaesthesia is a condition in which the input of one sensory modality triggers extraordinary additional experiences. On an explicit level, subjects affected by this condition normally report unidirectional experiences. In grapheme-colour synaesthesia for example, the letter A printed in black may trigger a red colour experience but not vice versa. However on an implicit level, at least for some types of synaesthesia, bidirectional activation is possible. In this study we tested whether bidirectional implicit activation is mediated by the same brain areas as explicit synaesthetic experiences.

fMRI evidence of neural abnormalities in the subcortical face processing system in ASD.

Recent evidence suggests that a rapid, automatic face detection system is supported by subcortical structures including the amygdala, pulvinar, and superior colliculus. Early-emerging abnormalities in these structures may be related to reduced social orienting in children with autism, and subsequently, to aberrant development of cortical circuits involved in face processing. Our objective was to determine whether functional abnormalities in the subcortical face processing system are present in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during supraliminal fearful face processing. Participants

Investigating the relative effects of sleep deprivation and time of day on fatigue and performance.

Time of day and the time since last sleep are acknowledged causes of fatigue, but comparatively little is known about how they interact. This study examines the relative effects of time of day and sleep deprivation on fatigue and performance. Two independent groups were exposed to 28 h of sleep deprivation beginning at 06:00 h for one group (n = 39) and at 00:00 h for the other (n = 22). By varying the start time for the two groups, but keeping constant the duration of sleep deprivation, the effects of variations in the time of day of testing could be examined. For the 06:00 h start group the

Sleep and time course of consolidation of visual discrimination skills in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy.

The level of procedural skills improves in normal individuals when the acquisition is followed by a period of sleep rather than wake. If sleep plays an important role in the consolidation process the advantage it provides should be reduced or delayed when its organization is altered, as in patients with chronic sleep disorders. To test this prediction in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (NC), who usually have a more fragmented organization of sleep than normals, we compared the initial, intermediate and delayed level of consolidation of visual skills. Twenty-two drug-naive NC patients and 22

The impact of context processing deficits on task-switching performance in schizophrenia.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been described as important for maintaining and implementing contextual information in the service of goal-oriented behavior. Accordingly, impairments in context processing are thought to underlie cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia, a clinical disorder that has been linked to PFC dysfunction (Servan-Schreiber et al., 1996). However, task switching, a cognitive ability linked to PFC function, has not been consistently impaired in schizophrenia. In this experiment, we assessed whether task-switching performance would be selectively impaired for patie

Self-training of dynamic touch: striking improves judgment by wielding.

In traditional theories of perceptual learning, sensory modalities support one another. A good example comes from research on dynamic touch, the wielding of an unseen object to perceive its properties. Wielding provides the haptic system with mechanical information related to the length of the object. Visual feedback can improve the accuracy of subsequent length judgments; visual perception supports haptic perception. Such cross-modal support is not the only route to perceptual learning. We present a dynamic touch task in which we replaced visual feedback with the instruction to strike the uns

Sluggish engagement and disengagement of non-spatial attention in dyslexic children.

Although the dominant view posits that developmental dyslexia arises from a deficit in phonological processing and memory, efficient phonological decoding requires precise visual selection of graphemes. Therefore, visual engagement and disengagement of non-spatial attention were studied in 13 dyslexic children and 13 chronological age and intelligence quotient (IQ) matched normally reading children by measuring "attentional masking" (AM) and "attentional blink" (AB) effects. AM refers to an impaired identification of the first (T1) of two rapidly sequential targets (i.e., attentional engagemen

Effects of preterm experience on the developing visual system: a longitudinal study of shifts of attention and gaze in early infancy.

Several studies on visual development support the notion that healthy, low-risk preterm infants benefit from their early exposure to the visual world. It has been suggested, however, that mainly early developing sensory and motor processes are enhanced as a result of visual experience and early exercise, whereas later maturing processes might not. This study investigates whether preterm infants' visual and attentional development is accelerated as a consequence of their early visual experience and whether early and later maturing processes are affected differently. Preterm and full-term infant

Verbal, visual, and spatio-sequential short-term memory: assessment of the storage capacities of children and teenagers with Down's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: It is recognized that individuals with Down's syndrome have a specific deficit in verbal short-term memory. On the other hand, non-verbal short-term memory seems to be preserved or even be a strong point for these persons. Nevertheless, the extent and specificity of the deficit must be determined. To do so, we carried out a research programme that allowed us to simultaneously assess various short-term memory systems in a developmental perspective, and to compare our participants' performance to that obtained by typically developing individuals of the same mental age. METHOD: Three

Differential impact of brain damage on the access mode to memory representations: an information theoretic approach.

Different access modes to information stored in long-term memory can lead to different distributions of errors in classification tasks. We have designed a famous faces memory classification task that allows for the extraction of a measure of metric content, an index of the relevance of semantic cues for classification performance. High levels of metric content are indicative of a relatively preferred semantic access mode, while low levels, and similar correct performance, suggest a preferential episodic access mode. Compared with normal controls, the metric content index was increased in patie

Emotional modulation of perception in Asperger's syndrome.

Using an attentional blink paradigm, we show that the typical enhancement of perception for emotionally arousing events is significantly reduced in Asperger's syndrome (AS) at short inter-target intervals. Control experiments demonstrate that this finding cannot be attributed to differences in the perceived arousal of the stimuli, or to a global impairment affecting any type of modulation of perceptual encoding. Because a functioning amygdala is critical for emotional modulation of the attentional blink, the findings support a role for the amygdala in the pathophysiology of AS. More specifical

Lateral masking, levels of processing and stimulus category: a comparative study between normal and dyslexic readers.

The lateral masking effect results in lower performance on letter recognition when items are flanked by other stimuli. Using a new paradigm based on discrimination (feature analysis) and categorization (memory access) tasks, we investigated the influence of level of processing (as addressed, respectively, by these two tasks) and stimulus type (Latin letters, Korean letters and geometrical figures) on lateral masking. In addition, performance of dyslexic and non-dyslexic adult readers was compared. The non-dyslexic participants demonstrated a classical lateral masking effect with lower performa

Covert colour processing in colour agnosia.

Patients with colour agnosia can perceive colours and are able to match coloured patches on hue, but are unable to identify or categorise colours. It is a rare condition and there is as yet no agreement on the clinical definition or a generally accepted explanation. In line with observations from object agnosia and prosopagnosia, we hypothesised that (some of) these patients might still be able to process colour information at an implicit level. In this study, we investigated this possibility of implicit access to colour semantics and colour names in a man (MAH) who suffers from developmental

Is everybody always my friend? Perception of approachability in Williams syndrome.

Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) are well known for their friendly behaviour and tendency to approach strangers indiscriminately as if everybody were their friend. This tendency to approach strangers is mirrored in their ratings of unfamiliar face stimuli. Here we examined their perception of unfamiliar expressive faces and found that individuals with WS do not always see faces as being highly approachable. Happy faces were rated as more approachable by individuals with WS than by controls. In contrast, the other less approachable face stimuli were rated lower on approachability by indi

Comparison of the effects of damage to the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortex on transverse patterning and location memory in rhesus macaques.

Monkeys with damage to the parahippocampal (TH/TF) or perirhinal (PRh) cortex were tested on two sets of the transverse patterning (TP) problem (A+/B-, B+/C-, C+/A- and D+/E-, E+/F-, F+/D-) and delayed nonmatching-to-location paradigm (DNML), with delays ranging from 10 to 600 s. Damage to either area impaired acquisition and performance of TP but not of linear discriminations (e.g., A>B>C>X). Damage to areas TH/TF impaired performance of the DNML at all delays but only affected memory for objects at the longest delay, as measured by a delayed nonmatching-to-sample task (DNMS) (Nemanic et al.,
