[Benign circinated pityriasic erythema in children].

The case is report of a boy aged 6 months whose dermatosis had set in suddenly 15 days before in the form of large round circinate patches on the face, thorax, abdomen, dorsum and extremities. These patches were limited by a slightly elevated erythematous border, the inside of which was constituted by collarette-like epidermal desquamations with central parakerotosis. The patches impairment was observed in the child's general condition. A histopathological study was carried out.

Febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease: a case report and literature review in preschool-aged children.

Febrile Ulceronecrotic Mucha- Habermann Disease (FUMHD) is a rare and severe specialized type of Pityriasis Lichenoides Et Varioliformis Acuta (PLEVA). It is characterized by rapid onset of painful necrotic skin lesions and systemic symptoms. The diagnosis of FUMHD is complex and is easily misdiagnosed in the early stages. Despite the increasing number of reports of FUMHD in recent years, it is still uncommon in preschool (3-6 years) children. We here report a 3-year-9-month-old girl of FUMHD from China, cured through combined antibiotics, intravenous immunoglobulin, methotrexate, and predniso…

Lepromatous leprosy in a case of epidermodysplasia verruciformis - A coincidence or a result of defective cell-mediated immunity?

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EDV) is a rare, autosomal recessive, genetic disorder of immune dysregulation characterized by increased susceptibility to cutaneous human papilloma virus infections. It was first described by Lewandowsky and Lutz in 1922 as a form of epidermal nevus. Its association with skin cancers was proposed by Sullivan and Ellis in 1939. Initial lesions often occur in childhood and are of two types; lifelong eruptions of pityriasis versicolor like lesions and flat wart like papules. The latter is characterized by malignant transformation in 35%-50% of patients especially…

Fine structural investigation of Malassezia furfur: I. Size and shape of the yeast cells and a consideration of their ploidy.

Small and medium sized yeast cells of cylindrical or oval shape predominated in two Malassezia furfur-standard strains CBS 1878 and CBS 6001 during the exponential growth phase. Large cells of wide-oval shape were rare. They were encountered at the beginning of the stationary phase in strain CBS 6001, which also tended to form filaments easily. In the scales of pityriasis versicolor, there were large wide-oval or spherical cells besides small and medium sized yeast cells and hyphal filaments. Considering the variable size and shape of the yeast cells, differences of their ploidy seemed likely,…

Itraconazole in tinea versicolor: a review.

Itraconazole, a new orally active triazole antifungal, has been tested in patients with pityriasis versicolor. A number of studies have shown that itraconazole is effective for this mild fungal skin disease. The total dose required for effective treatment is 1000 mg, and it has been given as 200 mg for 5 days or 7 days. The organisms disappear slowly from the skin, even when dead, and the results should be assessed clinically and mycologically at around 3 to 4 weeks after treatment. Numerous studies have shown that itraconazole is superior to placebo and as effective as selenium sulfide, clotr…

Treatment regimens, protocols, dosage, and indications for UVA1 phototherapy: facts and controversies.

During the last three decades, ultraviolet A1 (UVA1) phototherapy has emerged as a specific phototherapeutic modality with distinct modes of action and some well established indications. Atopic dermatitis, localized scleroderma, and systemic lupus erythematosus seem to be the conditions with the best evidence regarding efficacy and safety of UVA1 phototherapy. Further indications for UVA1 include subacute prurigo, lichen sclerosus, dyshidrotic dermatitis, cutaneous T cell lymphoma, urticaria pigmentosa, and pityriasis rosea; nevertheless, there are some unknowns, uncertainties, and controversi…

[Malassezia infections].

Although Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection Pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis. Lipophilic yeasts are being considered as major opportunistic pathogens for a very long time. Most of the yeasts show an absolute requirement for long fatty acid chains and specific procedures are required for their isolation, conservation and identification. To date, the genus is composed of one non lipid-dependent species M. pachydermatis and lipid-dependent species M. furfur, M. sympodialis, M. globosa, M. obtusa, …

A study of the spectrum of skin disease occurring in a black population in south-east London.

We recorded the diagnosis made in 461 black patients (187 children and 274 adults) attending a dermatology clinic between January and March 1996. In the childhood population, atopic eczema and tinea capitis were the most frequent dermatoses, comprising 63% of diagnoses recorded. In the adult population, acne and acne keloidalis nuchae were seen most frequently. Other conditions observed commonly were eczema, psoriasis, keloid scarring, pityriasis versicolor and postinflammatory changes. Our study demonstrates a wide spectrum of skin disease and includes disorders more common in black skin, dis…

Malassezia-associated skin diseases in the pediatric population.

Malassezia are yeast species that commonly colonize healthy skin. However, they have been associated with or implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous skin disorders, particularly in the setting of pediatric populations. In this review, we will focus on several Malassezia-associated skin conditions manifesting in infants, children, and adolescents: pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis, infantile and adolescent seborrheic dermatitis, head and neck dermatitis, and neonatal cephalic pustulosis. We examine the literature and provide an overview of these conditions, including clinical pr…
