An evaluation of cone-beam computed tomography use in postgraduate orthodontic programs in the United States and Canada.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in postgraduate orthodontic residency programs. An anonymous electronic survey was sent to the program director/chair of each of the sixty-nine United States and Canadian postgraduate orthodontic programs, with thirty-six (52.2 percent) of these programs responding. Overall, 83.3 percent of programs reported having access to a CBCT scanner, while 73.3 percent reported regular usage. The vast majority (81.8 percent) used CBCT mainly for specific diagnostic purposes, while 18.2 percent (n=4) used CBCT as a

Parenchymal and pleural findings in pulmonary embolism visualized by multi-channel detector computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: A normal computed tomography (CT) scan of the pulmonary arteries in the presence of parenchymal and pleural abnormalities may indicate a false-negative diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE). Multi-channel detector CT (MDCT) with thinner collimation may improve the detection of small peripheral PEs causing such abnormalities. PURPOSE: To investigate parenchymal and pleural findings visualized by contrast-enhanced MDCT in patients with and without PE, and to identify possible predictors of PE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 129 patients with clinical signs of PE were included. In all patient

JPEG2000 3D compression vs. 2D compression: an assessment of artifact amount and computing time in compressing thin-section abdomen CT images.

To assess the advantages of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)2000 3D (part 2) over JPEG2000 in compressing thin-section abdomen CT data sets, 60 thin-section (0.67 mm) scans from 35 males and 25 females, ranging from 23 to 95 years of age (mean, 58 years), were compressed reversibly (as a negative control) and irreversibly to 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 using JPEG2000 3D and JPEG2000 algorithms. Encoding and decoding times and peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNRs) were measured. For 60 (one image per scan) representative sections containing abnormalities, three radiologists independe

Small-bowel obstruction from adhesive bands and matted adhesions: CT differentiation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the CT findings that can help to differentiate small-bowel obstruction (SBO) due to adhesive bands from SBO caused by matted adhesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT scans of 67 consecutive patients with adhesive SBO caused by either surgically confirmed adhesive bands or matted adhesions were analyzed. CT findings were compared between the two groups with regard to simple obstruction patterns (single abrupt transition zone, beak sign, "fat notch" sign), patterns of closed-loop obstruction (two adjacent beaks, C-shaped bowel, radial distributio

Circumferential and longitudinal cyclic strain of the human thoracic aorta: age-related changes.

OBJECTIVE: We developed a novel method using anatomic markers along the thoracic aorta to accurately quantify longitudinal and circumferential cyclic strain in nondiseased thoracic aortas during the cardiac cycle and to compute age-related changes of the human thoracic aorta. METHODS: Changes in thoracic aorta cyclic strains were quantified using cardiac-gated computed tomography image data of 14 patients (aged 35 to 80 years) with no visible aortic pathology (aneurysms or dissection). We measured the diameter and circumferential cyclic strain in the arch and descending thoracic aorta (DTA),

Relationship between CT intensity, micro-architecture and mechanical properties of porcine vertebral cancellous bone.

BACKGROUND: In vivo assessment of bone density is insufficient for the evaluation of osteoporosis in patients. A more complete diagnostic tool for the determination of bone quality is needed. Micro-computed tomography imaging allows a non-destructive method for evaluating cancellous bone micro-architecture. However, lengthened exposure to ionizing radiation prevents patients to be imaged by such a system. The aim for this study was to elucidate the relationships between image intensity (of Hounsfield units), cancellous bone micro-architecture and mechanical properties. METHODS: Using pig vert

A new method for measurement of subcoracoid outlet and its relationship to rotator cuff pathology at MR arthrography.

OBJECTIVE: Orthopaedic surgical studies have shown that variations in the vertical distance between the tip of the coracoid process and the supra-glenoid tubercle alter the shape of the subcoracoid outlet. Our objective was to measure the vertical distance between the coracoid tip and the supra-glenoid tubercle (CTGT) on MR and to assess whether this showed better correlation with rotator cuff pathology compared with the axial coraco-humeral distance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 100 consecutive shoulder MR arthrograms. Vertical distance between the coracoid

Role of imaging in progressive-fibrosing interstitial lung diseases.

Imaging techniques are an essential component of the diagnostic process for interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). Chest radiography is frequently the initial indicator of an ILD, and comparison of radiographs taken at different time points can show the rate of disease progression. However, radiography provides only limited specificity and sensitivity and is primarily used to rule out other diseases, such as left heart failure. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is a more sensitive method and is considered central in the diagnosis of ILDs. Abnormalities observed on HRCT can help identify s

Trabecular bone characterization on the continuum of plates and rods using in vivo MR imaging and volumetric topological analysis.

Osteoporosis is associated with increased risk of fractures, which is clinically defined by low bone mineral density. Increasing evidence suggests that trabecular bone (TB) micro-architecture is an important determinant of bone strength and fracture risk. We present an improved volumetric topological analysis algorithm based on fuzzy skeletonization, results of its application on in vivo MR imaging, and compare its performance with digital topological analysis. The new VTA method eliminates data loss in the binarization step and yields accurate and robust measures of local plate-width for indi

Automatic lung tumor segmentation on PET/CT images using fuzzy Markov random field model.

The combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and CT images provides complementary functional and anatomical information of human tissues and it has been used for better tumor volume definition of lung cancer. This paper proposed a robust method for automatic lung tumor segmentation on PET/CT images. The new method is based on fuzzy Markov random field (MRF) model. The combination of PET and CT image information is achieved by using a proper joint posterior probability distribution of observed features in the fuzzy MRF model which performs better than the commonly used Gaussian joint d
