Does mindfulness change the mind? A novel psychonectome perspective based on Network Analysis.

If the brain is a complex network of functionally specialized areas, it might be expected that mental representations could also behave in a similar way. We propose the concept of 'psychonectome' to formalize the idea of psychological constructs forming a dynamic network of mutually dependent elements. As a proof-of-concept of the psychonectome, networks analysis (NA) was used to explore structural changes in the network of constructs resulting from a psychological intervention. NA was applied to explore the effects of an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in healthy part

Neurostructural abnormalities associated with axes of emotion dysregulation in generalized anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and its negative impact on society, its neurobiology remains obscure. This study characterizes the neurostructural abnormalities associated with key symptoms of GAD, focusing on indicators of impaired emotion regulation (excessive worry, poor concentration, low mindfulness, and physiological arousal). METHODS: These domains were assessed in 19 (16 women) GAD patients and 19 healthy controls matched for age and gender, using questionnaires and a low demand behavioral task performed before and after an induction of pe

Efficacy of drug-eluting stent for chronic total coronary occlusions at different follow-up duration: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A subgroup of adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of cancer during adolescence report high levels of psychological distress. To date, evidence-based psychological interventions tailored to the cancer-related concerns experienced by this population are lacking. The present study aimed to (1) examine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an individualized cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention for AYA survivors of cancer during adolescence; and (2) identify and conceptualize cancer-related concerns as well as maintaining factors using cognitive-behavioral theory

Chronic stress, cortisol dysfunction, and pain: a psychoneuroendocrine rationale for stress management in pain rehabilitation.

Pain is a primary symptom driving patients to seek physical therapy, and its attenuation commonly defines a successful outcome. A large body of evidence is dedicated to elucidating the relationship between chronic stress and pain; however, stress is rarely addressed in pain rehabilitation. A physiologic stress response may be evoked by fear or perceived threat to safety, status, or well-being and elicits the secretion of sympathetic catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinepherine) and neuroendocrine hormones (cortisol) to promote survival and motivate success. Cortisol is a potent anti-inflamm

Emotional Dysregulation-Mediated Associations Between Guilt Proneness, Shame Proneness, and Internet Gaming Disorder Among Chinese University Students: Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Guilt proneness and shame proneness are interconnected yet distinct personality traits that are gaining attention in addiction research. However, studies examining their differential associations with internet gaming disorder (IGD) and mediation mechanisms explaining these associations remain scarce. Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that emotional dysregulation could be a potential mediator of the associations between guilt proneness and shame proneness and IGD. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations between guilt proneness in cognitive (guilt-negat

Understanding emotion and emotional scarring in recurrent depression.

BACKGROUND: A single-item assessment of sad mood after remission from MDD is predictive of relapse, yet the mechanisms that play a role in depressive relapse remain poorly understood. METHODS: In 283 patients, remitted from recurrent depression (DSM-IV-TR criteria; HAM-D17 score ≤ 10), we examined emotional scarring, that is, whether the number of previous depressive episodes was associated with higher levels of sad mood as assessed with a 1-item Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS). We then fitted a cross-sectional multivariate regression model to predict sad mood levels, including the Dysfunct

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Anorexia Nervosa: Mediating Mechanisms and Risk by Adversity Patterns.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to investigate the mediating mechanisms linking adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to anorexia nervosa (AN) and to examine whether distinct patterns of ACE exposure are associated with differential risks and mediation pathways. METHOD: Data for 9746 female individuals were collected from nationally representative Japanese surveys. ACEs were assessed using a 15-item Japanese ACE questionnaire, and AN was identified via self-reported physician diagnosis. Causal mediation analysis and structural equation modelling were used to examine indirect pathways, while

The relationship between time perspective and fear of cancer recurrence among Chinese gastric cancer patients: the chain mediating role of rumination and catastrophizing.

PURPOSE: Gastric cancer patients often experience significant fear of recurrence, impacting their physical and mental health. This study explores how time perspective influences fear of cancer recurrence, considering the roles of intrusive rumination and catastrophizing. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with 394 gastric cancer patients. Participants completed self-report measures assessing fear of cancer recurrence, time perspective, intrusive rumination, and catastrophizing. Pearson correlation analysis and bias-corrected percentile bootstrap methods were used to conduct chain

Trait-dependent effects of theta burst stimulation after psychosocial stress: a sham-controlled study in healthy individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies suggest that theta burst stimulation (TBS), a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) might be a promising approach to modulate stress-reactive rumination and the associated psychophysiological stress response. Crucially, individuals showing higher levels of trait rumination might benefit more from prefrontal stimulation. METHODS: In this sham-controlled study, 127 healthy individuals, with varying ruminative tendencies, received a single-session of intermittent TBS (iTBS), continuous T

Examining the indirect effects of acculturation stress on insomnia through rumination and alcohol use among Latinx women and men.

OBJECTIVES: Acculturation stress, a type of sociocultural stress, is positively associated with insomnia among Latinxs; however, the mechanisms of this association remain elusive. We tested the indirect effects of acculturation stress on insomnia through rumination and alcohol use, two coping strategies associated with insomnia, and explored these effects in gender-stratified models among Latinxs. METHOD: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 187 Latinxs participating in the Latino Sleep and Health study in New York City in 2016-2019. We conducted bias-corrected boot-strap tests of mediation

Difficulties in Pregnancy Adjustment as Predictors of Perinatal Depression: Indirect Effects through the Role of Brooding Rumination and Maternal-Fetal Bonding.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to study the ways in which problems of adaptation to pregnancy influence the development of symptoms of perinatal depression via the presence of brooding and low maternal-fetal bonding, in addition to other risk factors previously established in the literature. STUDY DESIGN: Representative sample of pregnant women in the third trimester of gestation (N = 594) completed an online survey that included sociodemographic data and measures of perinatal depression, adjustment to pregnancy, bonding, and brooding. Other risk factors were also assessed as covaria

Precursors of the emotional cascade model of borderline personality disorder: The role of neuroticism, childhood emotional vulnerability, and parental invalidation.

The emotional cascade model proposes that the emotional instability and engagement in maladaptive behaviors within borderline personality disorder (BPD) may be linked to rumination. Previous research has established that BPD is highly related to neuroticism, childhood emotional vulnerability, and parental invalidation. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to assess whether the constructs of the emotional cascade model relate to other constructs within the BPD nomological network. More specifically, neuroticism, childhood emotional vulnerability, and parental invalidation should rela

Killing during combat and negative mental health and substance use outcomes among recent-era veterans: The mediating effects of rumination.

OBJECTIVE: Although killing in combat is associated with negative mental health outcomes and hazardous alcohol use, mechanisms that underlie this risk are not well understood. To our knowledge, this present brief report is the first to use mediation analysis to examine associations between killing in combat, distinct facets of rumination (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts), and negative mental health outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidality) and hazardous alcohol use. METHOD: Participants were a community sample of

Understanding mental distress in Arcahaie, Haiti: Heterogeneous uses of idioms of distress in communicating psychological suffering.

Research on mental health in specific communities requires careful attention to cultural context and language. Studies on global mental health have increasingly analyzed idioms of distress, or culturally situated ways of conceptualizing, experiencing, and expressing distress. This study examines how idioms of distress are used and understood in Arcahaie, Haiti. The goal was to enrich current understanding of mental health conceptualization and communication by exploring the heterogeneity of common idioms of distress. Interviews with community members (N = 47) explored meanings and perceived ca

The Development of the Brooding Scale.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a Brooding Scale (BS) and to confirm its psychometric properties. METHODS: A preliminary questionnaire was developed based on a literature review and face-to-face interviews with healthy subjects. To evaluate reliability and construct validity, a 15-item BS was administered to 124 healthy subjects. Convergent validity was tested by assessing the relationship between the BS and the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS). Discriminant validity was confirmed in 58 patients with schizophrenia. RESULTS: The internal consistency for the BS was excellent

Fears, Coping Styles, and Health Behaviors: A Comparison of Patients With Hypochondriasis, Panic Disorder, and Depression.

Research into correlates of illness anxiety disorder (formerly hypochondriasis) rarely applies comprehensive assessments of health behavior. Moreover, studies on phenomenological varieties of clinical health anxiety are scarce. We examined health behavior, fear, and acceptance of death and dying, and coping with a hypothetical bodily disease in patients with hypochondriasis, panic disorder, depression, and healthy controls (all groups n = 30) using self-rated questionnaires. ANOVA with Dunnett-T3 post hoc tests revealed no group differences in health behavior. The hypochondriasis and panic dis

Examining risk and resilience factors for depression: The role of self-criticism and self-compassion.

Whereas self-criticism has been proposed as an important risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD), self-compassion has been suggested as a resilience factor that protects against the development and maintenance of depressive episodes. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that frequent self-criticism and low habitual self-compassion are related to concurrent depression and to vulnerability to depression by comparing groups of currently, remitted and never depressed individuals. As expected, both currently and remitted depressed individuals reported higher levels of self-criticism and

Cascades of Emotion: The Emergence of Borderline Personality Disorder from Emotional and Behavioral Dysregulation.

Theories of borderline personality disorder (BPD) have often considered it a disorder involving both emotional and behavioral dysregulation (Linehan, 1993), yet the connection between these phenomena has been elusive. The following paper proposes the Emotional Cascade Model, a model that attempts to establish a clear relationship between emotional dysregulation and the wide array of dysregulated behaviors found in BPD. In this model, subsequent to an emotional stimulus, ruminative processes result in a positive feedback loop that increases emotional intensity, and this emotional intensity lead

Artificial a theoretical model of triggered displaced aggression.

A tit-for-tat matching rule (Axelrod, 1984) describes much interpersonal behavior. Yet, in daily life a retaliatory aggressive response to a trivially mild provocation often inappropriately exceeds that expected from the matching rule. The concept of triggered displaced aggression can explain these exceptions to the matching principle. Building from the Cognitive Neoassociationistic model of aggressive behavior (Berkowitz, 1989, 1990, 1993), we developed a theoretical framework of social and personality factors that moderate and mediate the disjunctively escalated retaliation that can result f

Development of gender differences in depression: description and possible explanations.

This article reviews the description and possible explanations for the development of gender differences in depression in children and adolescents. The emerging gender difference (more girls depressed than boys) in depressed mood and depressive disorders appears after the age of 13 years or midpuberty. Currently, little evidence supports that biological factors are an explanation. Genetic factors are associated more strongly with depression among pubertal girls than boys. Regarding cognitive factors, ruminative response style, but not dysfunctional attitudes or attributional style, has been su
