Self-Powered MXene@Perovskite Thermoelectric Skin for Multimodal Mid-Infrared Sensing and Human Signal Recognition.

The effective detection of human thermal radiation (8-14 µm) was critical for next-generation human-machine interactions (HMIs). However, conventional mid-infrared sensors were typically constrained by external power requirements and limited capability in decoding complex multimodal signals. Here, we developed a bio-inspired, self-powered thermoelectric skin based on a V2C MXene@CsPbBr3 heterostructure. By combining the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of V2C MXene with the photothermoelectric effect (PTE) of perovskite, efficient photothermal conversion and self-driven signal generation

Exploring the Cognitive and Behavioral Aspects of Shprintzen-Goldberg Syndrome; a Novel Cohort and Literature Review.

Shprintzen-Goldberg-syndrome (SGS) is caused by pathogenic exon 1 variants of SKI. Symptoms include dysmorphic features, skeletal and cardiovascular comorbidities, and cognitive and developmental impairments. We delineated the neurodevelopmental and behavioral features of SGS, as they are not well-documented. We collected physician-reported data of people with molecularly confirmed SGS through an international collaboration. We identified and deep-phenotyped the neurodevelopmental and behavioral features in four patients. Within our cohort, all exhibited developmental delays in motor skills an

Simplified Designing and Insetting of the Free Flap in Reconstructing Oral and/or Oropharyngeal Defect.

Reconstructing oral and/or oropharyngeal defect after tumor ablation requires anatomic restoration of the complex structures to maximize functional outcomes. This study introduces a simple and adjustable way of designing and insetting of a free flap in such reconstruction. Patients who received free flap reconstruction of oral and/or oropharyngeal defect with 33% to 66% of the native tongue left intact after resection of the tumor were enrolled and reviewed. Flap was designed as an oval shape according to the maximum width and length of the defect, and sutured from the most posterior part. Nat

A novel hypomorphic MECP2 point mutation is associated with a neuropsychiatric phenotype.

The MECP2 gene on Xq28 encodes a transcriptional repressor, which binds to and modulates expression of active genes. Mutations in MECP2 cause classic or preserved speech variant Rett syndrome and intellectual disability in females and early demise or marked neurodevelopmental handicap in males. The consequences of a hypomorphic Mecp2 allele were recently investigated in a mouse model, which developed obesity, motor, social, learning, and behavioral deficits, predicting a human neurobehavioral syndrome. Here, we describe mutation analysis of a nondysmorphic female proband and her father who pre

Biological abnormality of impaired reading is constrained by culture.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by a severe reading problem in people who have normal intelligence and schooling. Impaired reading of alphabetic scripts is associated with dysfunction of left temporoparietal brain regions. These regions perform phonemic analysis and conversion of written symbols to phonological units of speech (grapheme-to-phoneme conversion); two central cognitive processes that mediate reading acquisition. Furthermore, it has been assumed that, in contrast to cultural diversities, dyslexia in different languages has a universal biological origin. Here we show using f

A genome scan for developmental dyslexia confirms linkage to chromosome 2p11 and suggests a new locus on 7q32.

Developmental dyslexia is a distinct learning disability with unexpected difficulty in learning to read despite adequate intelligence, education, and environment, and normal senses. The genetic aetiology of dyslexia is heterogeneous and loci on chromosomes 2, 3, 6, 15, and 18 have been repeatedly linked to it. We have conducted a genome scan with 376 markers in 11 families with 38 dyslexic subjects ascertained in Finland. Linkage of dyslexia to the vicinity of DYX3 on 2p was confirmed with a non-parametric linkage (NPL) score of 2.55 and a lod score of 3.01 for a dominant model, and a novel lo

Interfacial Polarization Dynamics of Nitrile Dipoles in Organic Synaptic Transistors for Acoustic Reservoir Computing.

Polar polymer interlayers have emerged as core functional layers in organic synaptic transistors (OSTs), enabling diverse neuromorphic behaviors through interfacial dipolar polarization and relaxation. However, the interfacial dipolar mechanisms governing memory window (ΔV) formation and modulation remain insufficiently understood. Here, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is selected as a representative polar polymer interlayer to exploit nitrile (CN) dipolar relaxation for temporal acoustic reservoir computing (RC). It is found that the ΔV varies nonmonotonically with PAN concentration, suggesting a di

Lingual nerve injuries: recognized complications or preventable errors?

Lingual nerve injuries (LNIs) represent a significant clinical challenge that can compromise speech, taste perception, and overall patient well-being. These may occur during third molar extractions, inferior alveolar nerve blocks, implant placement, root canal treatment and other dental, oral, and maxillofacial procedures. A major controversy centers on whether LNIs should be regarded as recognized complications-unavoidable events despite competent care-or potential negligence arising from substandard practice. Such classification hinges on factors including adherence to standard surgical prot

Recent update on reading disability (dyslexia) focused on neurobiology.

Reading disability (dyslexia) refers to an unexpected difficulty with reading for an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. Dyslexia is most commonly caused by a difficulty in phonological processing (the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken language), which affects the ability of an individual to speak, read, and spell. In this paper, I describe reading disabilities by focusing on their underlying neurobiological mechanisms. Neurobiological studies using functional brain imaging have uncovered the reading pathways, brain regions involved in reading, and neu

National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme: Current status & future strategy.

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) constitute a significant public health problem globally. In India, the entire population is prone to IDDs due to deficiency of iodine in the soil of the sub-continent and thus both animal and plant source food grown on the iodine-deficient soil. IDDs encompass the spectrum of disability and disease and include goitre, cretinism, hypothyroidism, abortion, stillbirth, brain damage, learning disabilities, mental retardation, psychomotor defects, hearing and speech impairment. Iodine deficiency is known to be the single largest cause of preventable brain damage.

Sex differences in quadrupedal walking gaits of Uner Tan syndrome cases, healthy humans and nonhuman primates.

BACKGROUND: Uner Tan syndrome (UTS) cases with habitual quadrupedal locomotion (QL), impaired intelligence, and dysarthric or no speech predominantly use lateral sequence (LS) gait like nonprimates rather than the predominantly diagonal sequence (DS) gait of nonhuman primates. However, these studies neglected possible sex-related differences in these gait types. OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the possible sex-related gait types in UTS cases, healthy infants and adults with requested QL, and the nonhuman primates. (2) To test the hypothesis that sex differences may exist in quadrupedal walking gait
