Effects of industrial solvents on hearing and balance: a review.

Industrial hearing loss has generally been associated with noise exposure, but there is a growing awareness that industrial solvents can have an adverse effect on the auditory and vestibular systems in man. Both animal experiments and human studies point to an ototoxic effect of industrial solvents, as well as some central auditory and vestibular disturbances. This review examines the research from the last four decades in an attempt to get an overview of the available evidence. Research shows that industrial solvents are ototoxic in rats. The majority of the solvents studied cause a loss of a

Inner ear dysplasia is common in children with Down syndrome (trisomy 21).

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Middle and external ear anomalies are well recognized in Down syndrome (DS, trisomy 21). Inner ear anomalies are much less frequently described. This study reviews inner ear morphology on imaging to determine the prevalence of cochlear and vestibular anomalies in children with DS. STUDY DESIGN: The authors conducted a retrospective review of imaging features of (DS) inner ear structures. METHODS: Fifty-nine sequential patients with DS with imaging of the inner ear were identified by a radiology report text search program. Quantitative biometric assessment of the inner

Direction and distance deficits in path integration after unilateral vestibular loss depend on task complexity.

The effects of peripheral vestibular disorders on the direction and distance components of the internal spatial representation were investigated. The ability of Menière's patients to perform path integration was assessed in different situations aimed at differentiating the level of spatial processing (simple versus complex tasks), the available sensory cues (proprioceptive, vestibular, or visual conditions), and the side of the path (towards the healthy versus the lesioned side). After exploring two legs of a triangle, participants were required either to reproduce the exploration path, to fol

Vestibular function in migraine-related dizziness: a pilot study.

Migraine-related dizziness (MRD) refers to a disorder in which vestibular symptoms are an integral part of migraine symptomatology. The purpose of this study was to better define the pathophysiology of MRD, which is incompletely understood and to generate hypotheses regarding MRD by assessing the semicircular canal-ocular reflex, the otolith-ocular reflex, visual-vestibular interaction, vestibulo-spinal function, and visually induced postural sway. Subjects included five subjects with MRD, five subjects with migraine without dizziness, and five headache-free controls. Subjects with migraine we

The ventral uvula of the mouse cerebellum: a neural target of ethanol and vestibular stimuli.

The present study demonstrates that mice exposed to vertical translation stimulation exhibit a distinct parasagittal pattern of Fos-immunoreactive (Fos-IR) granule cells in the ventral uvula of the cerebellum. This pattern is identical to one produced by acute ethanol treatment. In contrast, yaw stimulation produces an entirely different pattern in this same region of the cerebellum. Similar results are obtained in the light or in total darkness. These results suggest an anatomical and functional organization within the granule cells of the ventral uvula that may be a common neural substrate f

Purkinje cells of the cerebellar dorsal vermis: simple-spike activity during pursuit and passive whole-body rotation.

To track a slowly moving object during whole body rotation, smooth-pursuit and vestibularly induced eye movements must interact to maintain the accuracy of eye movements in space (i.e., gaze), and gaze movement signals must eventually be converted into eye movement signals in the orbit. To understand the role played by the cerebellar vermis in pursuit-vestibular interactions, in particular whether the output of the vermis codes gaze-velocity or eye-velocity, we examined simple-spike activity of 58 Purkinje (P-) cells in lobules VI-VII of head-stabilized Japanese monkeys that were trained to el

Treating vertigo with vestibular rehabilitation: results in 155 patients.

Balance is fundamental to our daily activities and the vestibular system, together with vision and proprioceptive functions, are the main structures involved in this process. Dizziness is the main clinical manifestation of malfunction of these systems. The mechanisms of vestibular compensation are one of the most studied aspects since they play an important role in the patient's everyday activities. In this retrospective description of a series of cases the authors present their results in 155 patients that underwent a program of vestibular rehabilitation (VR). The program, first described by

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: preliminary report.

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short-latency electromyograms evoked by high-level acoustic stimuli recorded from surface electrodes over the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle. These responses are presumed to originate in the saccule. The purpose of this preliminary report is to provide an overview of our initial experience with the VEMP by describing the responses obtained in five subjects. Click-evoked VEMPs were present at short latencies in two normal-hearing subjects, one patient with profound congenital sensorineural hearing loss, and one patient wit

Histologic studies of the posterior stapediovestibular joint in otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of ankylosis or otosclerosis at the posterior stapediovestibular joint (SVJ) in temporal bones with otosclerosis, with special reference to stapes surgery. BACKGROUND: Long-term success of the laser stapedotomy minus prosthesis (STAMP) procedure, anterior crurotomy, and similar partial stapedectomy procedures depends on lack of ankylosis and lack of otosclerosis involving the posterior SVJ. Previous work has shown that the air-bone gap in otosclerosis correlates with narrowing and loss of the SVJ space. However, the prevalence and histologic features of

Effect of methimazole, an FMO substrate and competitive inhibitor, on the neurotoxicity of 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile in male rats.

This study was designed to examine the role of flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO) on the auditory and vestibular neurotoxicity of 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) using the FMO substrate and competitive inhibitor methimazole (MMI). Specifically, the purpose was to block the FMO-mediated conversion of IDPN to the putative neurotoxic metabolite N-hydroxy3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (HOIDPN). In three separate experiments, adult male Long-Evans hooded rats were administered (ip) saline (vehicle), MMI, IDPN, or HOIDPN individually, or a combination of IDPN and MMI or HOIDPN and MMI. Off-vertical axis rotational responses in patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular lesions.

Off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) stimulates the otolith organs in a manner that is suitable for assessment of the otolith-ocular reflex. To further assess the potential clinical usefulness of OVAR, the eye movement responses of seven patients with surgically confirmed unilateral peripheral vestibular lesions were compared with the eye movement responses of a group of age-matched, healthy, asymptomatic control subjects. Patients and controls were tested with constant velocity rotations that followed a brief period of angular acceleration (velocity trapezoid) using either earth-vertical axis (E

Torsional nystagmus. A neuro-otological and MRI study of thirty-five cases.

Thirty-five patients with torsional nystagmus (TN) underwent vestibular and ocular motor assessment and magnetic resonance image (MRI) scanning of the head. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether TN was predominant and present in primary gaze (Group I, 23 patients) or elicited by head positioning or gaze deviation and less prominent than other concurrent nystagmus (Group II, 12 patients). The main aetiologies in both groups were demyelination, vascular disease and posterior fossa tumours. In Group I, a frequent pattern of findings, occurring in 30-50% of cases, was a calori

Immunoglobulin E and circulating immune complexes in endolymphatic hydrops.

Levels of circulating immune complexes (CICs) in 59 patients with Meniere's disease and total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in a subgroup of 42 of the 59 were determined quantitatively for possible abnormalities of humoral immunity. Significant differences in average IgE levels between the 42 patients with Meniere's disease and 18 normal control subjects were not determined; however, five (11.9%) of the 42 patients were found to have obviously raised IgE levels. Elevated CIC levels were found in 19 (32.2%) of the 59 patients with Meniere's disease and in one (2.3%) of the 43 control subj

Temporal bone findings in a case of bilateral Menière's disease treated by parenteral streptomycin and endolymphatic shunt.

A patient with bilateral Menière's disease who had progressive hearing loss and intractable vertigo was treated at ages 60 and 62 with parenteral streptomycin to ablate vestibular function, and at age 74 by a left endolymphatic shunt procedure. He was confined to a wheelchair because of ataxia from age 75 until the time of his death at age 81. Both temporal bones show congenitally hypoplastic endolymphatic sacs and severe endolymphatic hydrops consistent with Meniere's disease. There was atrophy of the striae vasculares and loss of cochlear neurons consistent with presbycusis. A loss of hair c

[Possibilities of studying the auditory evoked potentials in patients with various forms of extrapyramidal pathology].

As many as 47 patients with different extrapyramidal hyperkinesias were examined. In addition to the methods commonly accepted in otoneurology, use was made of the method of recording short-wave auditory evoked potentials (SAEP). The parameters of SAEP were correlated to the degree of auditory and vestibular function impairment. The data obtained indicate that the majority of patients with hyperkinesias manifest a well-defined reduction of the amplitude and an increase of the latent period of the late waves of SAEP, which attests to the interest of the cerebral structures.

Interaction of spatial perception, vestibular function, and exercise in young school age boys with learning disabilities.

Form rotation, figure directionality, and figure-ground discrimination were evaluated before and after 10 days of vestibular or aerobic exercises for 30 boys (7 to 12 yr.) who showed problems in learning, reading, and inattention. Eight subjects had normal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) responses as determined by caloric and rotational testing. They were assigned to a vestibular program (Control Group I). The 22 subjects with abnormal VOR test responses were randomly assigned to either aerobic exercises (Experimental Group II) or a vestibular program (Experimental Group III). Spatial perceptual

Vestibular function assessment in patients with Meniere's disease: the vestibulospinal system.

The state-of-the-art approach to clinical assessment of vestibular disturbances includes a number of procedures in which it is assumed that the status of major vestibular pathways is quantified independently from converging somatosensory and visual influences. Although it has been known for some time that this approach has limitations in a highly integrative system in which inputs from a number of sensory modalities interact, a practical remedy has been only recently forthcoming. Using an approach to assessment of the vestibulospinal system developed by Nashner, the application of moving platf
