The comparison of the efficacy of surgical and nonsurgical procedures revealed that scaling and root planing alone or in combination with flap procedures are effective methods for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. In 52 children with exomphalos treated over a 10 year period, the overall mortality was 31%. Death was almost invariably due to associated major congenital abnormalities.
