OBJECT: Because of their large size and high vascularity, complete removal of brain tumors in infants and young children is often difficult. In most cases the degree of resection is associated with prognosis. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may facilitate resection by reducing the vascularity of the tumor. The authors evaluated the effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the management of these tumors.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of infants and young children who underwent tumor removal after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
RESULTS: Nine consecutive patients underwent resec

PURPOSE: Immune cells in primary uveal melanoma (PUM) have mostly been studied in enucleated tissue, thereby precluding material from thinner, low-risk PUM tumors for research purposes. Here, we investigated the feasibility of using tumor tissue acquired by transvitreal retinochoroidal (TVRC) tumor biopsies to study the tumor immune microenvironment and relation to genetic risk class.
METHODS: Collected tumor biopsies of 41 patients were tested for genetic aberrations to determine high-risk (n = 19), medium-risk (n = 12), and low-risk (n = 9) tumors and were digested for flow cytometry analys

PURPOSE: Molecular mechanisms of uveal melanoma development in association with high pigmentation are unclear. Tyrosinase Related Protein (TYRP1) is not only one of the important melanogenesis marker that contributes to melanin synthesis, but can also prevents the melanocyte death. The induction of melanogenesis leads to induction of HIF-1α which can affect the behavior of melanoma cells and its surrounding environment. The aim of our study was to determine the expression of TYRP1 and HIF-1α at the protein and RNA level and determine its prognostic significance.
METHODS: In the present study,

Nodular posterior scleritis represents a small percentage of all cases of posterior scleritis. Because of the scarcity of nodular posterior scleritis, it may be confused or even misdiagnosed as an intraocular tumor or posterior uveitis. Here, we are reporting a case of nodular posterior scleritis in a 25-year-old medically free male. Furthermore, we reviewed previously reported cases of nodular posterior scleritis. Our patient presented with a choroidal mass of about one disc diameter in size. In addition, the patient had exudative retinal detachment and chorioretinal folds. B scan ultrasonogr

OBJECT: Although atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) is known to generate through inactivation of the hSNF5/INI1 gene on chromosome 22q, the downstream molecular mechanism remains unclear. We histologically and molecularly reviewed our pediatric brain tumors for unrecognized AT/RTs and evaluated the role of cyclin D1, a potential molecular target of hSNF5/INI1.
METHODS: We analyzed 16 tumors under three years of age: seven medulloblastomas, three anaplastic ependymomas (E IIIs), two each of supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (sPNETs) and choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs), and

Central nervous System (CNS) disease in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a major concern, but still, cellular mechanisms of CNS infiltration are elusive. The choroid plexus (CP) is a potential entry site, and, to some extent, invasion resembles CNS homing of lymphocytes during healthy state. Given exosomes may precondition target tissue, the present work aims to investigate if leukemia-derived exosomes contribute to a permissive phenotype of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). Leukemia-derived exosomes were isolated by ultracentrifugation from the cell lines SD-1, Nal
