We live in a time of global crises: a deteriorating environment that is struggling to provide all the resources and services we demand of it, changing climate and its consequences for the biosphere, its habitats, inhabitants and biodiversity, conflicts-divisive ideologies-competition for resources, increasing societal inequalities and human deprivations, and a youth mental health pandemic, to name but just a few. Most of these crises are self-made, the result of human decisions, and their acceptance/toleration by society. Policies and practices at all levels of society that created, exacerbate

Since the 1990s, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of the out-of-school context for children and adolescents. Fueled in part by family demographics that include substantial numbers of employed mothers and single mothers, in part by concerns about poor academic performance and problem behaviors, and in part by intensified efforts to find ways to promote positive youth development, researchers and practitioners have focused their attention on two particular out-of-school settings: after-school programs and structured activities. The research findings pertaining to full-time

BACKGROUND: Integrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) policies within health care is critical to ensuring equitable treatment and improved health outcomes for LGBTQ individuals. However, significant disparities remain in the implementation of these policies, with substantial challenges persisting in culturally and legally diverse settings such as Indonesia and Taiwan. This study explores these issues from the perspectives of long-term care staff in these two countries, focusing on their attitudes towards LGBTQ individuals and the effectiveness of existing policies.

Currently, the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) pollutants in the Earth's atmosphere due to the expansion of factories and vehicles has caused destructive effects, including an increase in the greenhouse effect, long-term droughts, insufficient rainfall, melting polar ice, and climate change. The various methods are available for removing carbon. Photocatalytic processes have emerged as promising and sustainable approaches for CO2 conversion because they don't make harmful byproducts, affect most contaminants, do not have any detrimental effects on the environment, don't need e

BACKGROUND: Little is known about sexual minority adults' willingness to use digital health tools, such as pandemic-related tools for screening and tracking, outside of HIV prevention and intervention efforts for sexual minority men, specifically. Additionally, given the current cultural climate in the United States, heterosexual and sexual minority adults may differ in their willingness to use digital health tools, and there may be within-group differences among sexual minority adults.
OBJECTIVE: This study compared sexual minority and heterosexual adults' willingness to use COVID-19-related

The Arctic is a climatically sensitive region that has experienced warming at almost 3 times the global average rate in recent decades, leading to an increase in Arctic greenness and a greater abundance of plants that emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). These changes in atmospheric emissions are expected to significantly modify the overall oxidative chemistry of the region and lead to changes in VOC composition and abundance, with implications for atmospheric processes. Nonetheless, observations needed to constrain our current understanding of these issues in this critical enviro

Under anoxic conditions, many bacteria, including Shewanella loihica strain PV-4, could use nitrate as an electron acceptor for dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and/or denitrification. Previous and current studies have shown that DNRA is favored under higher ambient carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios, whereas denitrification is upregulated under lower C/N ratios, which is consistent with our bioenergetics calculations. Interestingly, computational analyses indicate that the common cyclic AMP receptor protein (designated CRP1) and its paralogue CRP2 might both be involved in the

Gully erosion is a serious environmental problem worldwide, causing soil loss, land degradation, silting up of reservoirs and even catastrophic flooding. Mapping gully features from remote sensing imagery is crucial for assisting in understanding gully erosion mechanisms, predicting its development processes and assessing its environmental and socio-economic effects over large areas, especially under the increasing global climate extremes and intensive human activities. However, the potential of using increasingly available high-resolution remote sensing imagery to detect and delineate gullies

Metacestodes Dioecocestus asper (Cyclophyllidea) habe been found in larvae of dragonflies Aeshna spp. (Odonata, Anisoptera) from the lakes of the Upper Kolyma and northern Okhotsk seaboard basins (3.8 +/- 0.46 % of n = 1730 and 0.09 +/- 0.09 % of n = 1065, respectively) for the first time. Thus, participation of dragonflies in lifecycle of Dioecocestidae has been proved. Larvagenesis of D. asper (from spontaneously infested hosts) have been retraced from the stage of primary lacuna up to fully-developed metacestode. Process of development of the metacestode D. asper includes two invaginations.

PROBLEM: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) encompass a spectrum of conditions, including autistic disorder; pervasive developmental disorders, not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS); and Asperger disorder. Impairments associated with ASDs can range from mild to severe. In 2000, in response to increasing public heath concern regarding ASDs, CDC established the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. The primary objective of this ongoing surveillance system is to track the prevalence and characteristics of ASDs in the United States. ADDM data are useful to understand the preva

The rapid expansion of ocean oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) may significantly affect the microbial processes that regulate marine nitrogen cycling. The eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) bears one of the largest perennial OMZs, which is strongly influenced by the recurring El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). However, how microbial diversity and nitrogen cycling respond to oxygen variability under comparable ENSO conditions remains unclear. Here, we applied metagenomics to analyze changes in microbial communities across a dissolved oxygen (DO) gradient from oxic to suboxic conditions in the ETP durin

BACKGROUND: Climate change, globalization, and urbanization continue to reshape the ecology of vector-borne diseases, allowing mosquito-transmitted arboviruses to expand into previously non-endemic areas. Increasing insecticide resistance, ecological disruption, and declining efficacy of conventional vector control strategies have prompted an interest in microbe-based alternatives. Insect-specific viruses (ISVs), a group of viruses restricted to replicating in arthropods like mosquitoes, have emerged as potential modulators of mosquito vector competence. This systematic review assesses current

Approximately 50% of global lakes experience seasonal ice cover for an average of 217.5 days per year, a period that has traditionally been regarded as an ecological "dormant phase". During this period, lake ice regulates light availability, thermal structure, gas exchange, redox conditions, and hydrodynamic processes, all of which can influence mercury (Hg) speciation, transport, and transformation. However, most Hg biogeochemistry studies have focused on the open-water period, leaving Hg cycling during the ice-covered period insufficiently understood. To address this knowledge gap, six repre

BACKGROUND: Pandemics threaten economies, security, and public health, requiring strong global and local collaboration and coordination. Public receptivity to emergent vaccine technologies is essential to pandemic readiness. Although messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines offer rapid adaptability and hold promise, their use during the COVID-19 pandemic was met with polarizing debates that raise questions about the conditions needed to support acceptable and equitable use of new vaccines.
OBJECTIVE: This deliberative dialogue study aims to generate consensus on how to ensure informed, accessible public

No matter where we reside, the issue of greenhouse gas emissions impacts us all. Their influence has a disastrous effect on the earth's climate, producing global warming and many other irreversible environmental impacts, even though it is occasionally invisible to the independent eye. Phase change materials (PCMs) can store and release heat when it is abundant during the day (e.g., from solar radiation), for use at night, or on chilly days when buildings need to be heated. As a consequence, buildings use less energy to heat and cool, which lowers greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, researc

Health Resort Medicine, Balneology, Medical Hydrology and Climatology are not fully recognised as independent medical specialties at a global international level. Analysing the reasons, we can identify both external (from outside the field) and internal (from inside the field) factors. External arguments include, e.g. the lack of scientific evidence, the fact that Balneotherapy and Climatotherapy is not used in all countries, and the fact that Health Resort Medicine, Balneology, Medical Hydrology and Climatology focus only on single methods and do not have a comprehensive concept. Implicit bar

GLOBAL BURDEN AND DATA GAPS: Many countries lack reliable data on anaemia prevalence, especially for populations beyond young children and women of reproductive age. Few national surveys measure both anaemia and its underlying causes. We call for the creation of a standardised global data repository and the development of a harmonised micronutrient survey platform to collect comprehensive, periodic data. We also recommend better integration of data across sources, including household surveys and other health data sources, and inclusion of haemoglobin assessment in existing survey platforms tha

BACKGROUND: Laboratory-based heatwave simulations are a valuable tool for evaluating physiological and functional effects of heat exposure in vulnerable population groups (eg, older adults) and for testing the efficacy of personal cooling strategies. However, previous studies have been short in duration (2-9 h) and therefore have not captured the cumulative, multiday exposures characteristic of real-world heatwaves. We aimed to investigate physiological and functional outcomes in older adults exposed to a 3-day simulated heatwave.
METHODS: We conducted a single-site, randomised, crossover tri

BACKGROUND: Dengue is an increasingly important vector-borne disease driven by climate variability, urbanization, environmental change, and population growth. Despite its rising burden in northern India, district-level spatial epidemiological frameworks integrating environmental suitability, transmission hazard, and population vulnerability remain limited. This study developed an integrated geographic information system (GIS)- and remote-sensing (RS)-based Dengue Risk Index (DRI) describing long-term spatial susceptibility to dengue in Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, and assessed its spatia
