A rapid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of human class-specific antibodies to Histoplasma capsulatum (histoplasmal immunoglobulin M [HIgM] and histoplasmal IgG [HIgG]) was developed by using antigen adsorbed onto polycarbonate-coated ferrous beads. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using nitrocellulose strips (dot-ELISA) for the routine laboratory detection of IgG antibodies to mumps and varicella viruses is described. The virus antigens are dotted onto nitrocellulose strips, and the dotted strips are incubated with the sera to be tested. The bound antibodies are revealed using enzyme-labeled antihuman IgG antibodies. Reliable results are obtained when the assay is carried out at 37 degrees C. Acute respiratory failure caused by infection with Coccidioides immitis is a rare, usually fatal, event. We report 2 patients who survived acute respiratory failure caused by primary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. We attribute the severity of illness to a large inoculum of organisms. The differentiation of mediastinal masses caused by lymphoma from those caused by histoplasmosis may require thoracotomy. We reviewed the medical records of 37 children undergoing initial evaluation for anterior or middle mediastinal masses. Sixteen had biopsy-proved lymphoma, and 21 had histoplasmosis; seven with histoplasmosis underwent thoracotomy. Clinical and morphological features in fifteen patients with chronic cholestatic liver disease (mixed form) who had two different types of complement-fixing antimitochondrial antibodies were compared with those found in twenty-five patients with classic primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). PBC-specific antimitochondrial antibody (M2) directed against an antigen of the inner mitochondrial membrane was always present in both groups. However, mixed-form cases had a second antimitochondrial antibody (M4) which fixed complement with a trypsin insensitive antigen probably located on the outer membrane.

In 1979, 110 people associated with a local rural abattoir presented with an acute febrile illness thought to be Q fever. Of these, 70 were shown by serotesting to have had Q fever, and one was shown to have had leptospirosis alone. Four individuals had mixed infections of Q fever with another zoonotic infection, two with leptospirosis, and two with brucellosis. An antigen similar in its specificity to a nonvirion antigen emerging in stationary tissue culture cells spontaneously or experimentally infected with oncornavirus D was found in mammary gland cancer tumour tissues of 9 out of 54 examined patients. This virus-associated antigen was absent in 17 examined specimens of benign tumours of the same localization (fibroadenomas, mastopathies) or in the organs of a normal adult man or human embryo.

In two siblings, we saw bilateral macular lesions that were consistent with the diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. Although the congenital nature of this type of infection cannot be proven conclusively, there is considerable evidence that the lesions in our young patients were scars from congenital toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. To our knowledge, congenital ocular toxoplasmosis in siblings has not previously been reported.

A complement-fixing (CF) antigen was prepared from amastigotes and trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi (Ernestina strain) grown in beef embryo cell cultures. Paired sera from 97 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis were examined regarding antibodies to Branhamella catarrhalis. In Trinidad, six Leptospira isolates were made from 957 febrile patients between 1968 amd 1972. In addition, CF antibodies were detected in 6-6% of febrile patients and human survey sera collected during this period. The incidence of parietal cell antibodies (P.C.A.) in patients with various diseases was investigated by complement fixation test (C.F.T.). The relationship between the incidence of P.C.A. and clinical and pathological findings was also investigated.
