OBJECTIVE: The study attempted to evaluate the value of ultrasonography in determining the therapeutic strategy for patients with osseous injuries caused by ankle sprains.
DESIGN: A 10-MHz compact linear-array ultrasound transducer was used to assess patients with inversion ankle sprains. Eleven female and 12 male patients who had fractures detected by sonograms were included in the study. All 23 patients underwent radiographic examination for identification of fractures. Bone scintigraphy was performed for those who had negative x-ray findings.

The purposes of this study were to determine the clinical course of isolated congenital pseudarthrosis of the fibula (ICPF) and to establish optimal treatment guidelines for this disease. Thirteen fibulae in 12 patients with ICPF were followed for an average of 6.2 years. Twelve of the 13 fibulae were regarded to originally have had a pre-pseudarthrotic condition. Five fibulae remained intact during follow-up, but 8 developed pseudarthrosis. We treated four cases of partial physeal growth arrest by resecting the bone bridge and interposing an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane, which has minimal tissue response. We evaluated three cases with sufficiently long follow-up. No apparent recurrence of the bone bridge and no limb length discrepancy occurred in any of the cases. The anterolateral perforator flap is becoming the flap of choice for a wide variety of complex defects. It has been known to provide excellent donor site morbidity even in cases where vastus lateralis is included within the flap. We report a case of herniation of the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris muscles through the overlying fascia, following ALT perforator flap harvest. In this case muscle herniation at the donor site required surgical repair.
