PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of the minimally invasive technique for recurrent pectus excavatum.
METHODS: Fifty patients with recurrent pectus excavatum underwent a secondary repair using the minimally invasive technique. Data were reviewed for preoperative symptomatology, surgical data, and postoperative results.
RESULTS: Prior repairs included 27 open Ravitch procedures, 23 minimally invasive (Nuss) procedures, and 2 Leonard procedures. The prior Leonard patients were also prior Ravitches and are therefore counted only once in the analyses. The median age

This retrospective study collected data from 11 patients who underwent TDTA' repair from February 1987 to June 2003, 10 patients were men (90.9%) and 1 was a woman (9.09%) with a mean age of 32 years. All patients had a blunt injury from a violent motor vehicle accident. None of them required thoracotomy at the emergency room. Standard chest x-ray was done in every patient and the widening of the upper mediastinum was mainly found in 10 patients (90.9%), hemothorax in 8 patients, blurred aortic knob in 7 patients, lower left main bronchus in 3 patients, pleural apical cap in 2 patients and pne

STUDY OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the prevalence of thoracic injuries in children sustaining blunt torso trauma and to develop a clinical prediction rule to identify children with these injuries.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled pediatric patients (<16 years) who presented to the emergency department of a Level I trauma center with blunt torso trauma and underwent chest radiography. Clinical findings were recorded in a standardized fashion by the ED faculty physician. Thoracic injuries included the following: pulmonary contusion, hemothorax, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, tracheal-b

Despite the already wide experience with video-assisted techniques in laparoscopic surgery, video-assisted thoracic surgery only recently came to be developed. This is clearly seen in a survey reflecting the experience among Belgian surgeons. A majority of the surgeons (63%) had limited experience (1 to 5 interventions), and only 28.5% had fairly considerable (between 11 and 20 interventions) or considerable (more than 20 interventions) experience. The majority of interventions performed were the treatment of pneumothorax, lung biopsies, wedge resections, and intrathoracic staging procedures,

BACKGROUND: Trauma is an important cause of death in domestic cats, particularly in animals with unrestricted outdoor access. However, necropsy-based studies focusing specifically on immediately fatal trauma in free-roaming cats remain limited. This study aimed to characterize fatal traumatic injuries in free-roaming cats through a retrospective anatomopathological review of feline necropsies performed over a 10-year period at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Brazil, based on gross findings, histopathology, and complementary imaging when available.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, 3.7 million people present to an emergency department (ED) annually with an injury related to sports or athletic activity. A prior study a decade ago revealed that 14% of life-threatening injuries presenting to EDs were sports related, with this percentage being higher in the pediatric population. However, with changes in sports participation and regulatory changes over the past decade, it is unclear whether the proportion of life-threatening sports-related injuries has changed.

BACKGROUND: Current management of axillosubclavian deep venous thrombosis (DVT) often uses thrombolysis for the DVT, prompt first rib removal, and occasional venoplasty or stenting. Our institution has increasingly used anticoagulation alone followed by interval first rib resection. We sought to analyze the effectiveness of this simplified technique.
METHODS: Between September 2012 and April 2021, 27 patients were identified within the institution's electronic medical record as having undergone first rib resection for upper extremity DVT. Seven of these patients had undergone preoperative thr

BACKGROUND: Traumatic pneumothorax management has evolved to include the use of smaller caliber tube thoracostomy and even observation alone. Data is limited comparing tube thoracostomy to observation for small traumatic pneumothoraces. We aimed to investigate whether observing patients with a small traumatic pneumothorax on initial chest radiograph (CXR) is associated with improved outcomes compared to tube thoracostomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed trauma patients at our level 1 trauma center from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2020. We included those with a pneumothorax size

BACKGROUND: Chest tubes are routinely used after cardiac surgery to evacuate shed mediastinal blood. Incomplete chest drainage due to chest tube clogging can lead to retained blood after cardiac surgery. This can include cardiac tamponade, hemothorax, bloody effusions and postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Prior published non randomized studies have demonstrated that active tube clearance (ATC) of chest tubes can reduce retained blood complications prompting the ERAS Cardiac Society guidelines to recommend this modality.

BACKGROUND: Vascular access for renal replacement therapy (RRT) is routine question in the intensive care unit. Randomized trials comparing jugular and femoral sites have shown similar rate of nosocomial events and catheter dysfunction. However, recent prospective observational data on RRT catheters use are scarce. We aimed to assess the site of RRT catheter, the reasons for catheter replacement, and the complications according to site in a large population of critically ill patients with acute kidney injury.

Chest injuries are common and inevitable complications of chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This study aimed to investigate lung parenchymal and thoracic skeletal injuries after CPR by using computed tomography (CT) and to analyze the correlation between the duration of CPR and related complications. We examined 43 non-traumatic cardiac arrest patients who were successfully resuscitated after CPR and had chest CT scans within 24 hours of CPR. Lung parenchymal injuries were assessed by quantifying the lung contusion score (LCS) on the CT images, and each skeletal inj

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome is an important clinical entity, which usually affects young patients and working cohort, causing disability if unrecognized and untreated. Although treatment is commonly conservative, in patients with more severe disease, surgical treatment is often required for decompression. Purpose of this paper was to evaluate the surgical and clinical outcomes of patients who underwent first rib resection through transaxillary approach for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) during a period of 30 years.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on a prospectively compi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinica! and radiologic outcome of posterior multilevel vertebral osteotomy (PMVO) in patients with severe kyphoscoliosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Authors have developed and reported results of PMVO for correction of neuromuscular scoliosis. PMVO has advantages such as, posterior-only procedure which avoids risk to pulmonary complications and gives satisfactory correction. However, its effect in correcting severe scoliosis in presence of rigid kyphosis has not been reported.

BACKGROUND: The major consequence of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) is the direct inflow of blood from the pulmonary artery to the pulmonary vein which induces hypoxemia. Severe complications include transient ischemic attacks, paradoxical embolization in the central nervous system, massive hemoptysis or hemothorax, etc. The conventional treatment is surgical intervention. However, this can be very traumatic and dangerous. Endovascular embolization has advantages over surgery such as a faithful therapeutic effect, a low complication rate, repeatability, etc.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence of immediate postoperative pulmonary complications and their correlation to preoperative pulmonary function tests (PFTs), preoperative pulmonary symptoms and surgical approaches.
METHODS: The case records of 298 patients, who underwent anterior or posterior fusion, were reviewed. Preoperative PFTs were recorded and abnormal PFTs were defined as forced vital capacity (FVC) is less than 80% of FVC predicted. Preoperative pulmonary symptoms (breathless on exertion) were noted, and postoperative pulmonary complications were defined when the presence of atelec

Thirty-eight children (2 months to 26 years of age) underwent esophageal replacement at our institution between 1962 and 1993. Twenty-four patients had esophageal atresia, with the replacement performed at a mean age of 17 months. The remaining patients (37%) had strictures and were older (mean, 7.4 years). Replacement procedures involved the right colon in 61% of cases and the transverse left colon in the others (39%). Sixty-three percent were placed substernally and 37% were done in transthoracic fashion. The average length of stay in the hospital was 34 days (range, 11 to 256 days.) Early c
