AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of oral and injectable systemic treatments, such as methotrexate, azathioprine, cyclosporine, tofacitinib, baricitinib, corticosteroids, statins, zinc, apremilast, etc., for treating vitiligo lesions.
METHOD: Databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were meticulously searched for studies spanning from 2010 to August 2023, focusing on systemic oral and injectable therapies for vitiligo, using comprehensive keywords and search syntaxes tailored to each database. Key data extracted include

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is characterized by an autoimmune response targeting melanocytes, thus resulting in skin depigmentation. There are several genetic components involved in the development of vitiligo, of which various gene polymorphisms are currently considered as risk factors. For example, the CTLA4 (T-lymphocyte antigen 4) +49A/G (rs231775) and CT60 (rs3087243) gene variants have been associated with a predisposition for autoimmune diseases in different populations; however, their involvement in the development of vitiligo remains controversial.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the association be

Hereditary leukonychia or porcelain nails is a nail dystrophy characterized by whitening of the nail plates in all nails of the hands and feet. It may exhibit an autosomal recessive or autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Mutations in the gene PLCD1 have been reported to underlie hereditary leukonychia. In the present study, two Pakistani families with autosomal recessive hereditary leukonychia were investigated. Affected members of the families exhibited characteristic features of hereditary leukonychia with involvement of nails on both the hands and feet. Genotyping using microsatellit

INTRODUCTION: In the last years there have been increasing reports of adverse cutaneous reactions to temporary black henna tattoos. Black henna does not exist naturally, it is obtained from original henna after the addition of other compounds, among them paraphenylenediamine (PPD), that darken it and facilitate the process of tattoing. Paraphenylenediamine is an aromatic compound that presents cross reactions with other components that have a benzene ring in their molecular structure. Many of these products may be present in the daily life of any person.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed pati

Bier's spots are asymptomatic and permanent white macules, standing on a cyanotic background. These spots are associated with venous stasis and usually appear in physiological conditions. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman with a 2-year history of systemic scleroderma, who developed Bier's white spots associated with a vascular and renal crisis. Interestingly, these spots appeared with the crisis, and disappeared with the treatment and resolution of the crisis. They are probably a result of anatomical and functional damage to the small vessels of the skin. The pathophysiology in the ski

There is increasing evidence that hypomelanosis of Ito and related disorders such as linear and whorled naevoid hypermelanosis are due to mosaicism for a variety of chromosomal abnormalities. This group of disorders is better termed 'pigmentary mosaicism'. In this review we explain how disparate chromosomal abnormalities might manifest as a common pigmentary phenotype. In particular, we provide evidence supporting the hypothesis that the chromosomal abnormalities reported in these disorders specifically disrupt expression or function of pigmentary genes.

We present an eleven-year-old female patient who was referred to us with silvery hair, hepatosplenomegaly, neutropenia-thrombocytopenia, hypogammaglobulinemia and degenerative white matter disease, with a family history of a female sibling dying at the age of five and two living male cousins, ages 10 and 11. She had been followed up for her cytopenia the last three years and had totally recovered from a hemiplegic episode before admission. The family was of Arabic origin, and a second-degree consanguinity was reported between the parents. Microscopic analysis of her hair shafts revealed irregu

Over the last 2 decades, hypopigmented macules have been reported with increasing frequency as an initial presentation of mycosis fungoides (MF). We retrospectively reviewed 7 patients with hypopigmented MF. The mean age was 35 years at disease onset, with a mean of 5.5 years' duration of illness before presentation. All of our patients were Fitzpatrick skin type IV or V, and most reported pruritus. Histologic findings in all cases were consistent with MF. Treatment with topical nitrogen mustard produced repigmentation in 4 of 6 patients.

Complications of chemical resurfacing may occur even though a controlled chemical wound has been induced. The surgeon must be totally familiar with the types of peels and the management of postoperative wound care based on the skin type of the patient. A thorough understanding of the concepts involved will enable early treatment and avoidance of permanent sequelae, such as pigmentary dyschromias, infection, or scarring.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a common cause of chronic hepatitis and is frequently associated with extrahepatic disease. Recently, cutaneous disorders have been a presenting manifestation of HCV infection. Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is one of the cutaneous diseases associated with hepatitis C. PCT manifests in an acute form with tense bullae and erosions and in a chronic form with milia, scarring, and sclerodermatous changes. HCV has also been implicated as a cause of vasculitis through immune complex deposition. We report a patient in whom HCV was associated with sclerodermoid PCT and a medi

Only a few records of pigmentation anomalies, particularly hypopigmentation conditions such as albinism, have been reported among Neotropical non-human primates. In Brazil, there are only 14 documented cases of pigmentation anomalies, with just two instances of albinism recorded within the Cebidae family. To our knowledge, no pigmentation polymorphisms have been documented in the Pitheciidae family to date. In this study, we report the first documented case of albinism in Callicebus nigrifrons (the black-fronted titi monkey) within the largest remnant of the Atlantic Forest in the State of Min…

BACKGROUND: With the growing popularity and accessibility of noninvasive cosmetic procedures, the need for safe and proper protocols across … le of skin resurfacing and hair removal should be avoided due to adverse effects such as hyper- and hypopigmentation.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI are at a higher risk for developing hypo- or hyperpigmentation following these procedures, emphasizing the need for tailored treatment strategies.

S1 was lethal to this species, with nitrite and nitrate concentrations that exceeded Mexican water-quality standards by a factor of 10. The extreme chemical load induces systemic hypoxia, as evidenced in larvae by marked hypoactivity. In contrast, …

Laccase2 is a multicopper oxidase that plays a central role in insect cuticle tanning and sclerotization, yet its molecular characteristics … repupal and late pupal stages. RNAi-mediated silencing of Zmlaccase2 resulted in persistent cuticle hypopigmentation, with larval depigmentation persisting through pupal development and adult emergence, ultimately preventing normal adult cuticle melanization. Moreover, Zmlaccase2 knockdown significantly impaired larval growth and survival, accompanied by decreases …
