A Minority Stress Perspective in Five Paraphilic Interest Groups.

Paraphilic sexual interests are frequently stigmatized, yet little research has examined potential minority stress processes across these groups. We investigated outness, prejudice events, self-stigma, and concealment, along with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and autism traits in N = 470 UK-based participants in five paraphilic groups: BDSM (n = 278), pet play (n = 194), age play (n = 123), furry (n = 101), and balloon fetishism (n = 53), with overlapping memberships. Rates of self-reported clinical-range autism traits ranged from 14.6% (BDSM) to 45.3% (Furries). Hierarchical regression mod

Explanatory and modifying factors of the association between sex and depression onset during adolescence: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is twice as high in women as in men and this difference already emerges during adolescence. Because the mechanisms underlying this sex-difference remain poorly understood, we took a bottom-up approach to identify factors explaining the sex-MDD relationship. METHODS: Data came from the TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS), a population study investigating youths' development from age 11 into adulthood. We assessed multiple baseline covariates (e.g., demographic, social and psychological) at ages 11-13 years and MDD

Characterizing Acute Low Back Pain in a Community-Based Cohort: Results from a Feasibility Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute low back pain (LBP) is a common experience; however, the associated pain severity, pain frequency, and characteristics of individuals with acute LBP in community settings have yet to be well understood. In this manuscript, two acute-LBP severity categorization definitions were developed: 1) pain impact frequency (impact-based) and 2) pain intensity (intensity-based) severity categories. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe and then compare these acute-LBP severity groups in the following characteristics: 1) sociodemographic, 2) general and physical health, and 3) p

Neurological Considerations for "Nerve-Sparing" Cosmetic Genital Surgeries Performed on Children with XX Chromosomes Diagnosed with 21-Hydroxylase Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia and Clitoromegaly.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is most often caused by adrenal deficiency of 21-hydroxylase (21-OH). The resulting increase in androgens can cause clitoromegaly in fetuses with XX chromosomes. 21-OH CAH is the most common reason for cosmetic clitoroplasty in childhood. "Nerve-sparing" (NS) clitoral reduction surgeries are described as offering optimal cosmesis, while sparing sensation and nerve function. The methods used to demonstrate NS surgery efficacy, however, such as electromyography and optical coherence tomography, do not evaluate the small-fiber axons that comprise the majority

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Misdiagnosis among Mental Healthcare Providers in Latin America.

Mental healthcare professionals often have limited awareness of different obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptom presentations, which may contribute to years between OCD symptom onset and treatment initiation. While research has identified high rates of OCD misdiagnosis among clinicians from the United States and Canada, research on OCD symptom awareness among healthcare providers in Latin American (LATAM) regions is limited. In this study, LATAM mental healthcare providers (N = 83) provided diagnostic impressions based on five OCD vignettes: three with symptoms centered on taboo thoughts
