A single application of crotamiton lotion in the treatment of patients with pediculosis capitis.

A single application of 10% crotamiton lotion cured 96% of the 49 patients treated for pediculosis capitis. Only two (4%) patients needed a second application. Following crotamiton application, pruritus regressed completely in 98% of the patients. An adverse effect, namely localized skin irritation leading to interruption of the trial treatment, was reported in one patient.

Pediculus humanus capitis on children in Mahé, Seychelles.

The incidence of Pediculus humanus capitis infestation in pre-school and schoolchildren in Mahé, Seychelles, was investigated. High infestation rates were discovered, particularly in urban schoolchildren at district schools. Infestation in pre-schoolchildren increased with age. Girls were more infested than boys. Control of infestation will not be possible using only the child health service and the school health service. A combined approach is necessary based on the family unit.

Pediculosis ciliaris.

Pediculosis ciliaris, though not as common as in the past, is still not a rare disorder. Infestation has become more prevalent among adolescents within the past few years. Severe itching, irritation, secondary conjunctivitis, and preauricular adenopathy may accompany the louse infestation. A brief review of the etiology and treatment of pediculosis ciliaris has been presented. Every physician should be aware of this disorder and be adequately prepared to treat it.

An epidemic of pediculosis capitis.

An epidemic due to Pediculus humanus capitis occurred in the public schools of Buffalo, New York, in the winter of 1973. A survey at one elementary school showed that 20% of whites and no blacks were infested, and a city-wide prevalence survey during the academic year September 1972 to May 1973 showed that 7.2% of all pupils were infested. An epidemiological investigation showed that sex, age, race, socioeconomic status, crowding, method of closeting garments, and family size influenced the distribution of pediculosis but that hair length apparently was not a factor. Poverty and ignorance appe

PHLYCTENULOSIS IN THE ESKIMOS OF THE CANADIAN EASTERN ARCTIC.

During a recent ophthalmic survey of 780 Eskimos in the Canadian Eastern Arctic, 217 were found to have stigmata of phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis, 198 of these being inactive and 19 active. Attention is drawn to the high incidence of pediculosis capitis in the Eskimos of this region, and it is suggested that there may be a relationship between this infestation and phlyctenulosis.

The effect of emamectin benzoate on mortality, growth and metabolism of the polychaete Capitella sp.

Emamectin benzoate (EMB) is used as an in-feed antiparasitic agent to mitigate sea lice infestations in salmonid aquaculture, potentially entering the marine environment through uneaten feed pellets and feces. The polychaete Capitella sp. is a prevalent species in the benthic environments beneath salmon farms, being both an efficient fish-feces converter due to their deposit-feeding behavior and as susceptible non-target species to EMB exposure. However, the impact of EMB on this non-target species remains unclear. To assess the potential effects of EMB on Capitella sp., bioassays were conduct…

Effects of parasitic infestation on the productivity of alpacas (Lama pacos).

A trial was carried out in alpacas (Lama pacos) to determine the economic benefit of controlling both external and internal parasites using ivermectin (Ivomec, Merck, Sharpe and Dohme). After four months the treated male alpacas had gained on average 3.1 kg more than the untreated males and their fleece weighed 0.36 kg more. Treated females gained 1.9 kg more than the controls but their fleece weighed 0.03 kg less. This resulted in a net financial benefit to the farmer of US$3.54 for each male alpaca and US$1.36 for each female.

Two new species of Guimaraesiella Eichler, 1949 (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera: Philopteridae) from Tristan da Cunha finches.

We describe Guimaraesiella (Guimaraesiella) inaccessibilis sp. nov. from the Inaccessible Island finch, Nesospiza acunhae Cabanis, 1873 (Passeriformes: Thraupidae), and Guimaraesiella (Guimaraesiella) aedon sp. nov. from the Nightingale Island finch, Nesospiza questi Lowe, 1923. Considering that the conservation status of both host species is "vulnerable", it can be assumed that G. (G.) inaccessibilis and G. (G.) aedon are also vulnerable.

Relative virulence, host finding ability, and reproductive capacity of entomopathogenic nematodes for control of the goat biting louse Bovicola caprae (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae).

Bovicola caprae, the goat biting louse, is a permanent, obligate ectoparasite of goats. It causes dermatitis, irritation, hypersensitivity and lower productivity in goats. Problems associated with chemical insecticide use such as insecticide resistance and environmental concerns indicate that alternative methods (e.g., biological control) are needed. The objective of this study was to investigate the relative potential of different entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) species to control B. caprae. Five EPN species, Steinernema carpocapsae, S. feltiae, S. riobrave, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and

Examination of vertical transmission of Bartonella quintana in body lice following multiple infectious blood meals.

Bartonella quintana is a re-emerging louse-borne pathogen. Horizontal transmission from the body louse vector (Pediculus humanus humanus) to a human host occurs through contact with infectious louse feces containing a high concentration of the bacteria. However, questions have remained about whether vertical transmission from infected vectors to their progeny, which could significantly influence the dynamics of transmission to humans, occurs in body lice. To address this subject, we performed a series of controlled laboratory experiments that examined the presence of B. quintana on the surface

Body Lice among People Experiencing Homelessness and Access to Hygiene Services during the COVID-19 Pandemic-Preventing Trench Fever in Denver, Colorado, 2020.

Eight people with human body louse-borne Bartonella quintana infections were detected among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in Denver during January-September 2020, prompting a public health investigation and community outreach. Public health officials conducted in-person interviews with PEH to more fully quantify body lice prevalence, transmission risk factors, access to PEH resources, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected resource access. Recent body lice exposure was reported by 35% of 153 interview participants. In total, 75% of participants reported reduced access to PEH servi

Effects of ivermectin treatment during prepubertal and pubertal period on sexual parameters and sexual behavior in adulthood in rats.

Pediculosis is a parasitic disease that is considered a serious global public health problem. It is caused by the ectoparasite that is popularly known as lice, mainly affecting children in early childhood. The most commonly used treatment to combat this parasitosis is the macrocyclic lactone ivermectin (IVM). However, the use of IVM is contraindicated in children who are younger than 5 years old or who weigh <15 kg because some types of drugs that are used during certain periods of brain maturation can lead to behavioral disorders. The present study evaluated the effects of IVM treatment durin

Mechanisms underlying parasite infection: influence of host body mass and age on chewing louse distribution among brown-headed cowbirds.

Animal populations exhibit various patterns in ectoparasite distribution across different sexes and age classes, and numerous factors can potentially contribute to ectoparasite abundance and distribution. We examined the influence of host body size and age on the distribution of a chewing louse among brown-headed cowbirds. Differences in louse prevalence (males 62.9 ± 2.8%, females 47.5 ± 4.9%) and intensity (males 15.42 ± 1.51, females 9.04 ± 1.69) were primarily driven by differences in host body mass and not host sex. Larger birds had larger louse infra-populations, which likely translated

Thermo-orientation and the movement of feather-feeding lice on hosts.

Temperature variation on the host is known to influence ectoparasite distributions. Ectoparasites may also use temperature gradients between host regions when moving on the host; however, tests are rare. Feather-feeding wing lice (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) spend the majority of their time on the flight feathers of their avian hosts where they insert their bodies between feather barbs to escape host preening. However, because wing lice feed on downy abdominal feathers, they must repeatedly migrate between the flight feathers and body regions of their hosts. We performed a series of experiments

Pharmacokinetics and safety of 0.5% ivermectin lotion for head louse infestations.

The safety of a novel 0.5% ivermectin lotion (IVL) and potential for ivermectin absorption after application was investigated in an open-label study in young children, and a human repeat insult patch test (HRIPT) and cumulative irritation test (CIT) assessed any potential for cumulative dermal irritation and contact sensitization. In the pharmacokinetic and safety study, 30 head louse-infested children ages 6 months to 3 years received a 10-minute application of IVL on day 1. Blood was collected before application; 0.5, 1, and 6 hours after rinsing; and on days 2 and 8. Samples from 20 subject
