[Surgical management of extracranial internal carotid artery aneurysms].

Aneurysms of the extracranial internal carotid artery are rare but may present as a mass, with ischemic symptoms, or with fatal hemorrhage. … of the two, the aneurysm was located at the level of 2nd cervical vertebral body (case 2). Vertical mandibular osteotomy was performed posteriorly to the exit of the inferior alveolar nerve from the bone, which gave a good view of the upper third of the internal carotid artery and facilitated primary end-to-end anastomosis. In the other case in which there was a dilat …

Finite element analysis of shape and thickness variations in patient-specific implants for t-shaped genioplasty.

BACKGROUND: T-shaped genioplasty is a versatile surgical technique used to correct chin deformities by altering its vertical, transverse, and sagittal dimensions. Despite numerous advancements in patient-specific implants (PSIs), the biomechanical impact of PSI thickness and the number of screws used for fixation remain unexplored. This study aims to evaluate the effects of PSI thickness and screw configurations on fixation stability in T-shaped genioplasty using finite element analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mandibular computed tomography data were used to construct 12 three-dimensional mode

The fitting accuracy of pre-bend reconstruction plates and their impact on the temporomandibular joint.

BACKGROUND: Various causes for bone defects of the lower jaw have been described. As a result, patients often suffer from compromised aesthetics and a loss of, or reduction in, important physiological functions, such as swallowing, breathing, and speaking. A change in the shape of the lower jaw can impair the natural occlusion and leads to an atypical or modified position of the temporomandibular joint. Titanium reconstruction plates are the standard approach to jaw reconstruction, and are used for temporary bridging of a jaw defect or fixation of a bone graft. Conventionally these plates are

Comparison of tumor volume, thickness, and T classification as predictors of outcomes in surgically treated squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue.

BACKGROUND: As per TNM classification, superficial tumors with a favorable prognosis are fallaciously clubbed together with unfavorable, deeply infiltrating lesions in the same classification. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 588 patients with treatment-naive oral tongue cancers. Binary logistic regression was used to identify predictors of nodal metastasis and extracapsular spread (ECS) using tumor volume and thickness as separate models. The C-index was generated to quantify predictive accuracy of T classification, thickness, and tumor volume for survival. RESULTS: Compared to T c

Fast and early mandibular osteodistraction (FEMOD) in severe Pierre Robin Sequence.

Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a congenital abnormality characterized by mandibular hypoplasia, glossoptosis and often secondary palate cleft. It may be an isolated or part of a most complicated syndrome. The genetic syndrome that most frequently co-occurs is Stickler syndrome characterized by skeletal abnormalities, joint pain, congenital myopia and retinal detachment. The authors describe their fast and early mandibular osteodistraction (FEMOD) protocol in severe cases of PRS airway obstruction.

CBCT-based predictability of attachment of the neurovascular bundle to the proximal segment of the mandible during sagittal split osteotomy.

Injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) during surgery is an important complication of bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. With cone beam computed tomography, the course of the nerve and its relationship to the surrounding structures can be assessed in three dimensions. This study aims to determine whether tomography can predict attachment of the neurovascular bundle to the proximal segment of the mandible during sagittal split osteotomy (SSO). Bilateral linear measurements were taken on cross-sectional tomography images. During osteotomy, it was noted for each patient whether the neurovas
