A Comparison of Maxillofacial and Head Injuries Following Electric Scooter and Bicycle Accidents.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of maxillofacial and head injuries associated with electric scooters (e-scooter, ES) has risen in concordance with its popularity. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare maxillofacial and head injury location, type, and severity related to ES and bicycle accidents and to identify factors contributing to injury severity. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: The authors implemented a multicenter retrospective cohort study in Seattle, Washington, and enrolled a sample of ES riders and bicyclists who sustained maxillofacial injuries between September 2020 and Sept

Official government statistics of road traffic deaths in India under-represent pedestrians and motorised two wheeler riders.

BACKGROUND: Reliable data on traffic deaths are important for planning road safety programmes and evaluating progress. Although pedestrians comprise approximately 40% of traffic deaths in low-income and middle-income countries, official government statistics in India suggest that pedestrians comprise less than 10% of deaths. OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of official tabulations of traffic deaths among various road users in India. METHOD: We reviewed police first information reports (FIRs) of traffic deaths in one district (Belgaum) in 2013 and 2014 and extracted information about crash v

Occult traumatic dissection of vertebral artery with an excellent outcome.

We present the case of a young male with severe head injury, cervico-thoracic fractures, and an initially unrecognized brainstem infarct due to unilateral dissection of vertebral artery, who made an unusually excellent recovery. This report stresses the importance of prompt clinico-imaging diagnosis and prophylactic anticoagulant treatment in such cases.

Surgical repair of brachial plexus injury.

This preliminary report surveys the authors' experience in the treatment of 66 patients with brachial plexus traction injuries. The results of nerve reconstructive surgery obtained in 44 patients with a follow-up of at least 2 years were disappointing; on average, 10% of upper limb function was added. The role of several factors involved in this type of injury and the major draw-backs of treatment are discussed in combination with future possibilities. Current techniques of neurotizations are presented in one case.

Delay in hip reductions due to the advent of rapid CT scans in the trauma setting.

INTRODUCTION: With increasing reliance on computed tomography (CT) in trauma care, the use of anteroposterior (AP) pelvis radiographs has declined. This study examined whether omitting an initial AP pelvis film affected time to hip reduction and the need for additional CT imaging in patients with traumatic hip dislocations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review at a Level I trauma center (2005-2016). Eligible patients were adults (> 17 years) with native hip dislocations evaluated under the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocol. Patients with incomplete records or irreducible hi

Elbow flexion recovery after intercostal nerve transfer in elderly patients: a clinical experience report.

INTRODUCTION: Restoration of elbow flexion is a primary goal in the surgical management of complete traumatic brachial plexus injuries (BPIs). When proximal donor nerves are unavailable, intercostal nerve (ICN) transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) represents a well-established reconstructive option. However, elderly patients are markedly underrepresented in published series, and outcomes in this population remain poorly defined. The objective of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes of ICN-to-MCN transfer in elderly patients and to identify perioperative factors associated with

Scoping Review of the Published Guidelines for the Management of Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries.

A traumatic brachial plexus injury (TBPI) is a rare yet debilitating condition with a typical incidence of 0.6-3.9 per 100000 annually, predominantly affecting young, economically active males following motorcycle accidents. Delayed diagnosis and treatment are associated with poorer functional outcomes, significant individual disability, and societal burdens, including loss of vocational potential and increased care costs. Individuals in resource-limited settings are particularly vulnerable to receiving suboptimal care. This study aimed to identify and evaluate existing published guidelines fo

Determinants of modern contraceptive use among married and sexually active unmarried women aged 15-49 years old in Cambodia: How are geographical and socio-demographic factors associated with access?

Using modern contraceptives is essential for promoting economics, limiting the space of pregnancies, and improving maternal and newborn health outcomes. Despite progress in Cambodia, disparities in contraceptive use persist, particularly across socio-demographic and geographic groups. This study examined the prevalence and determinants of modern contraceptive use among married and sexually active women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in Cambodia, focusing on geographic and socio-demographic factors. This cross-sectional analysis of individual women's data from the 2021-2022 Cambodia Demograp

Blunt renal trauma in ureteropelvic junction obstruction kidney: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Kidneys are one of the most commonly affected retroperitoneal organ in trauma cases despite its relatively well-protected location. Renal trauma occurs in 80-95% of urogenital trauma cases and 8-10% of abdominal blunt trauma. Renal trauma in hydronephrotic kidney due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is a rare entity, despite of high risk of trauma urogenital due to large size and thin parenchyma. In this case we reported blunt renal injury with a congenital abnormality of the kidney. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of abdominal blunt trauma due to motor-vehicle

Selective transfer of nerve to supinator to restore digital extension in central cord syndrome: An anatomical study and a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nerve transfers are increasingly used to restore upper extremity function in patients with spinal cord injury. However, the role of nerve transfers for central cord syndrome is still being established. The purpose of this study is to report the anatomical feasibility and clinical use of nerve transfer of supinator motor branches (NS) to restore finger extension in a central cord syndrome patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The posterior interosseous nerve (PIN), its superficial division, and branches were dissected in 14 fresh cadavers, with a mean age of 65 (58-79). Measurements incl

Modified Masquelet Technique Using Allogeneic Graft for a Gustilo-Anderson Type III-A Open Fracture of the Femur with an 8 cm Bone Defect.

The induced membrane technique was initially described by Masquelet et al. in 1986 as a treatment for tibia nonunion; then, it became one of the established methods in the management of bone defects. Several changes have been made to this technique and have been used in different contexts and different methodologies. We present the case of a 16-year-old girl admitted to our department for a polytrauma after a motorcycle accident. She presented a Gustilo III-A open fracture of the right femoral shaft with a large bone defect of 8 centimeters that we treated with a modified Masquelet technique.

High Riding Prostate: Epidemiology of Genitourinary Injury in Motorcyclists from a UK Register of over 12,000 Victims.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of motorcycle accidents (high speeds, pelvis behind fuel tank) may predispose to genitourinary injury (GUI) but the epidemiology is poorly understood. Previous studies have assessed GUI patterns in cyclists, and road traffic accident victims in general, but no study has analyzed GUI patterns in a large cohort of motorcyclists. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to better understand patterns of urological injuries among motorcyclists admitted to hospital. We aimed to determine any relationship between pelvic fracture and GUI patterns or severity. METHODS: The Trauma Audit Research

Heterotopic ossification in a patient with paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity following multiple trauma complicated with vitamin D deficiency: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) may occur in patients with traumatic brain injury. Heterotopic ossification (HO) has frequently been observed in patients with PSH and has been found to impair patients' recoveries. However, the pathophysiology of HO in patients with PSH remains unelucidated. Vitamin D deficiency is a common abnormality among critically ill patients and may be associated not only with musculoskeletal complications, but also with high morbidity and mortality. The association between vitamin D deficiency and HO in patients with PSH has not yet been evaluated
