[Parosteal osteosarcoma: a clinical study of 48 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the way of diagnosis and therapy of parosteal osteosarcoma. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 48 patients treated at our department between June 1964 and December 2001. The average age of patients in this study was 29.2 years (13 - 47 years). Thirty-two of the patients were female; sixteen were male. The single most common site is the posterior aspect of the distal femur (in 36 patients), followed by the femur shaft (in 6 patients), the proximal tibia (in 2 patients), etc. Nine patients had been operated on before referral to our department. RESULTS:

The Curious Case of the Black Buboes.

Anthracosis is an environmental lung disease caused by carbon deposition and pigmentation in the airways. However, in rare instances, it can also have systemic involvement. We present a patient with B-symptoms and diffuse lymphadenopathy who was diagnosed with the infrequently described nodal anthracosis. A 64-year-old Vietnamese gentleman with a 50-pack-year smoking history who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer post-radical prostatectomy and awaiting radiation therapy presented with generalized weakness, low-grade fever, night sweats, and unquantifiable weight loss for a month. He w

Diagnostic Utility of Thoracoscopy in Recurrent Exudative Pleural Effusion: A Single-Arm Interventional Study.

Background and objectives Recurrent pleural effusion has always posed a challenge for definitive etiological diagnosis because it relies on nonspecific investigative methods like pleural fluid analysis. The basic nature of fluid, like transudate or exudate, can be differentiated by Light's criteria. The common causes of exudative effusion are tuberculosis, malignancy, and pneumonia. The non-specific method of diagnosis mainly depends upon pleural fluid biochemical and cytological tests in order to decide an empirical treatment. The blind method of pleural biopsy by introducing a specialized ple

Multiple cystic lung disease.

Multiple cystic lung disease represents a diverse group of uncommon disorders that can present a diagnostic challenge due to the increasing number of diseases associated with this presentation. High-resolution computed tomography of the chest helps to define the morphological aspects and distribution of lung cysts, as well as associated findings. The combination of appearance upon imaging and clinical features, together with extrapulmonary manifestations, when present, permits confident and accurate diagnosis of the majority of these diseases without recourse to open-lung biopsy. The main dise

Seasonal clustering of sinopulmonary mucormycosis in patients with hematologic malignancies at a large comprehensive cancer center.

BackgroundInvasive Mucorales infections (IMI) lead to significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. The role of season and climatic conditions in case clustering of IMI remain poorly understood.MethodsFollowing detection of a cluster of sinopulmonary IMIs in patients with hematologic malignancies, we reviewed center-based medical records of all patients with IMIs and other invasive fungal infections (IFIs) between January of 2012 and August of 2015 to assess for case clustering in relation to seasonality.ResultsA cluster of 7 patients were identified with sinopulmonary IMIs (

Легкомерный амилоидоз диагностируется Branbronchial Lung Biopsy: Three-Case Series with Divide Radiodial Provisions.

Adoption value of support vector machine algorithm-based computed tomography imaging in the diagnosis of secondary pulmonary fungal infections in patients with malignant hematological disorders.

This study aimed to assess the feasibility of diagnosing secondary pulmonary fungal infections (PFIs) in patients with hematological malignancies (HM) using computerized tomography (CT) imaging and a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. A total of 100 patients with HM complicated by secondary PFI underwent CT scans, and they were included in the training group. Concurrently, 80 patients with the same underlying disease who were treated at our institution were included in the test group. The types of pathogens among different PFI patients and the CT imaging features were compared. Radiomic f

Diagnosis and treatment of cystic lung disease.

Cystic lung disease (CLD) is a group of lung disorders characterized by the presence of multiple cysts, defined as air-filled lucencies or low-attenuating areas, bordered by a thin wall (usually < 2 mm). The recognition of CLDs has increased with the widespread use of computed tomography. This article addresses the mechanisms of cyst formation and the diagnostic approaches to CLDs. A number of assessment methods that can be used to confirm CLDs are discussed, including high-resolution computed tomography, pathologic approaches, and genetic/ serologic markers, together with treatment modalities

Mapping the research trends and hotspots on solid pulmonary nodules from 2000-2024: insights from bibliometric analysis.

BackgroundDue to extensive low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening, the detection rate of solid pulmonary nodules (PNs) is constantly rising. However, existing studies lack a comprehensive understanding of its emerging research trends and interdisciplinary progress, especially in terms of artificial intelligence (AI) integration and molecular characteristics. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to clarify the current research trends and predict future research hotspots in this field, in order to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce overtreatment, and promote inno

The Story of Localized Amyloidosis: Something Old and Something New - A Case Series.

Localized amyloidosis is a rare benign disease characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded proteins in a specific organ without systemic involvement, which might lead to organ dysfunction. Patients with localized amyloidosis do not develop systemic diseases such as cardiac, renal, hepatic, or nerve involvement. Typically, the localized disease is managed by surgical resection, while the systemic disease is treated with a combination chemotherapy and immunotherapy. However, some patients can have challenging clinical presentations, delaying diagnosis and organ dysfunction, and they m

Chemotherapy-induced pulmonary complications in cancer: Significance of clinicoradiological correlation.

Chemotherapy while revolutionizing cancer management by improving survival and quality of life; is also associated with several adverse effects. Lung is the most common organ affected in chemotherapy-related complications, due to either drug toxicity or more commonly due to infections caused by immunosuppression and less commonly due to immune-mediated injury. Radiology, when used in combination with clinical and lab data, can help reach the specific diagnosis or narrow down the differentials. The common radiological patterns of drug toxicity include pulmonary interstitial and airway infiltrat

Coexistence of Autoantibodies against the Golgi Complex and Ro52 Antigen in a Patient with Nonspecific Interstitial Pneumonia.

Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) is often associated with connective tissue diseases (CTD). The diagnosis of NSIP was confirmed in a 63-year-old man by high-resolution computed tomography and an open lung biopsy. Anti-Golgi complex autoantibodies (AGA) and anti-Ro52 antibodies were simultaneously detected at high concentrations. Autoantibodies to aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARS) were negative. The patient was treated with corticosteroids for six months. During the seven-year follow-up, NSIP had a slow progression and patient had not developed the clinical features of CTD. The present
