This paper investigates factors that underlie reduced informative content and lack of reference in the discourse of patients with Alzheimer's Type Dementia (DAT). Patients with DAT, fluent aphasics and normal controls were given a referential communication task structured to assess lexical encoding of information, pragmatic/conceptual elaboration of information and effectiveness in establishing reference. The subjects also received standardised aphasia tests (CADL, Holland, 1980; and Cookie Theft Picture Description, Nicholas and Brookshire, 1993). Comparable reduction of lexical encoding of i

BACKGROUND: There are many methods of testing covert face recognition in prosopagnosia, but it is not clear whether different types of covert recognition share a common mechanism.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether direct forced-choice techniques and indirect face-priming methods yielded similar behavioral estimates of covert ability in a series of prosopagnosic patients.
METHODS: The authors tested seven control subjects and seven prosopagnosic patients. Six patients had an apperceptive prosopagnosia: one with childhood onset, three with bilateral lesions, and two with unilateral occipitotempo

RATIONALE: Disorders associated with low levels of serotonin (5-HT) are characterized by mood and cognitive disturbances. Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) is an established method for lowering 5-HT levels and an important tool to study the effects of reduced 5-HT on mood and cognition in human subjects. The traditional ATD method, i.e., administration of separate amino acids (AAs), has several disadvantages. The AA mixture is costly, unpalatable and associated with gastrointestinal discomfort.
OBJECTIVES: The University of Maastricht developed a new and inexpensive method for ATD: a natural c

The hallucinogenic serotonin(1A&2A) agonist psilocybin is known for its ability to induce illusions of motion in otherwise stationary objects or textured surfaces. This study investigated the effect of psilocybin on local and global motion processing in nine human volunteers. Using a forced choice direction of motion discrimination task we show that psilocybin selectively impairs coherence sensitivity for random dot patterns, likely mediated by high-level global motion detectors, but not contrast sensitivity for drifting gratings, believed to be mediated by low-level detectors. These results a

We report a single-case study of peripherally acquired dyslexia that meets the clinical criteria of "alexia without agraphia." The patient, AA, has a large infarct involving the left posterior cerebral artery. The most striking feature is a severe impairment in recognizing single visually presented letters that precludes explicit or implicit access to reading, even in a letter-by-letter fashion. AA can, however, differentiate letters from similar nonsense characters and digits, and he is also able to identify alphanumeric signs when the visual channel is bypassed (through somesthesic or kinest

Four adults with mild mental retardation were taught to sort based on what two pictures had in common and to name each object and common features of two pairs as well as to comply with a series of instructions to sort the pictures selectively. The criterion task was to inspect a sample pair, sort through a deck of 15 pictures to find those showing what the sample pair had in common, and to repeat a series of pairs. They failed this task and continued to fail even after a supposedly relevant self-instruction. After being taught to act on what they told themselves, they self-instructed correctly

Thirty patients with a reduced central vision due to diseases of the posterior pole were examined with the VERIS system developed by Sutter and Tran (Vis Res 1992;32:433-446) to characterize the topography of electroretinographic (ERG) changes in comparison to the results in 30 normal volunteers. Diagnoses included Stargardt's macular dystrophy (SMD, n = 10), age-related macular degeneration (AMD, n = 5), cone dystrophy (CD, n = 5), central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO, n = 5), and autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA, n = 5). The 61 local responses obtained from each subjects were grouped b

The purpose was to examine the effect of test anxiety on deficits in the articulatory loop in the working memory system. We used a verbal memory task to occupy the articulatory loop and a spatial memory task to occupy the visuospatial scratch pad. 17 highly test-anxious and 19 low-anxiety subjects performed both tasks under an anxiety-inducing situation during which they were observed by a monitor camera. Percentage of correct responses and reaction times were measured as indices of task performance. Highly anxious subjects reported feeling worry and cognitive self-concern more than the low-an

A substantial research literature documents the effects of diverse item attributes, task conditions, and participant characteristics on the case of picture naming. The authors review what the research has revealed about 3 generally accepted stages of naming a pictured object: object identification, name activation, and response generation. They also show that dual coding theory gives a coherent and plausible account of these findings without positing amodal conceptual representations, and they identify issues and methods that may further advance the understanding of picture naming and related

We report the performance of a prosopagnosic patient on face learning tasks under different encoding instructions (i.e., levels of processing manipulations). R.J. performs at chance when given no encoding instructions or when given "shallow" encoding instruction to focus on facial features. By contrast, he performs relatively well with "deep" encoding instructions to rate faces in terms of personality traits or when provided with semantic and name information during the study phase. We propose that the improvement associated with deep encoding instructions may be related to the establishment o

Nine female patients with anorexia nervosa and 7 female patients with bulimia nervosa were assessed on the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT). This study found that subjects with bulimia nervosa responded more quickly than did the anorexic subjects. Results such as these suggest that not only are bulimic patients more behaviorally impulsive than anorexic patients, they are also more cognitively impulsive. Patients with anorexia nervosa in contrast seemed to display a reflective cognitive style. Extreme cognitive styles may contribute to resistance in treatment and/or relapse in anorexia or

Inspection of a visual scene rotating about the vertical body axis induces a compelling sense of self rotation, or circular vection. Circular vection is suppressed by stationary objects seen beyond the moving display but not by stationary objects in the foreground. We hypothesised that stationary objects in the foreground facilitate vection because they introduce a relative-motion signal into what would otherwise be an absolute-motion signal. Vection latency and magnitude were measured with a full-field moving display and with stationary objects of various sizes and at various positions in the

Covert recognition of faces in prosopagnosia, in which patients cannot overtly recognize faces but nevertheless manifest recognition when tested in certain indirect ways, has been interpreted as the functioning of an intact visual face recognition system deprived of access to other brain systems necessary for consciousness. The authors propose an alternative hypothesis: that the visual face recognition system is damaged but not obliterated in these patients and that damaged neural networks will manifest their residual knowledge in just the kinds of tasks used to measure covert recognition. To

The performance of a group of three postencephalitic subjects with anterograde amnesia was examined on a series of concurrent visual discrimination problems and on a test of visual recognition, delayed matching-to-sample. These tests were chosen as they have been used to assess experimental models of anterograde amnesia in nonhuman primates. In comparison with a group of normal subjects the postencephalitic group were impaired on the more difficult concurrent discrimination problems. They also performed poorly on the matching-to-sample task when given lists of items to remember or given increa

A total of 24 asymptomatic HIV-infected patients (CDC II/III) and 27 HIV-negative controls were tested for speed of reaction and for general neuropsychological functioning. Reaction time was assessed with two computerized tests with differing levels of cognitive complexity. The results show that the asymptomatic HIV-positive patients have a significantly longer mean reaction time to simple and complex stimuli (SRT p < 0.001, CPT p < 0.05), and a significantly greater standard deviation (SD) (SRT-SD p < 0.005). No significant differences were observed on any of the clinical neuropsychological t

A pattern electroretinogram (PERG) was recorded in patients in the initial stages of visual field defects resulting from open-angle glaucoma, in patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) and in age-matched controls. In both groups the visual acuity was above 0.8. Counterphasing checkerboard patterns were used as visual stimuli with a check size of 0.8 degrees and a range of reversal rates from 6 to 36 reversals/s. The most significant reductions of amplitudes due to glaucoma and OHT were observed at rates of 18 and 24 reversals/s (glaucoma: P less than 0.005 at 18 and 24 reversals/s, OHT: P less

The role of the phonological lexicon in oral reading is examined in a patient with a small focal left hemisphere lesion. Impaired access to the patient's phonological lexicon is suggested by a number of findings, including the production of phonemic errors across a variety of tasks; increasing difficulty in word production with increasing word length; and difficulty on tests of homophone and rhyme judgments. Two competing models of reading are tested: the nonlexical ("rules") and the lexical ("no-rules") models. The rules model predicts that a disturbance in the phonological lexicon will resul

Parallel distributed processing (PDP) models of reading developed out of an appreciation of the role that context plays in letter and word perception. Adult readers can more accurately identify letters in a word than alone or in other random display contexts, a phenomenon known as the Word Superiority Effect (WSE). We examined the effects of orthographic context on the letter recognition skills of dyslexic children, comparing their performance to adults, and chronological- and reading-age matched groups. Consistent with previous studies, results showed adults better able to identify letters in

A 61-year-old right-handed man fell downstairs and was found unconscious. There was no abnormality in the general physical examinations. Neurological examinations revealed a quadrantanopia. Neuropsychological examination revealed an impairment in recent verbal memory, alexia, agraphia, object agnosia, color naming difficulty, prosopagnosia, and visuospatial constructional disability. CT scan demonstrated subcortical hematomas in the temporo-occipital regions of both hemispheres. MRI demonstrated extensive low-intensity lesions in the lingual, fusiform and posterior inferior temporal gyri on bo

We conducted a series of experiments to assess the ability to recognize the meaning of facial expressions, gender, and age in four patients with severe impairments of the recognition of facial identity. In three patients the recognition of face identity could be dissociated from that of facial expression, age, and gender. In one, all forms of face recognition were impaired. Thus, a given lesion may preclude one type of recognition but not another. We conclude that (1) the cognitive demands posed by different forms of recognition are met at different processing levels, and (2) different levels
