Sickle cell disease (SCD) and sickle cell trait (SCT) can be associated with sudden unexpected death in the pediatric population, usually due to pulmonary complications occurring within the acute chest syndrome (ACS). The fetal skeleton arises from neural crest and from mesoderm. Here, we provide evidence that each lineage contributes a unique stem cell population to the regeneration of injured adult bones. Using Wnt1Cre::Z/EG mice we found that the neural crest-derived mandible heals with neural crest-derived skeletal stem cells, whereas the mesoderm-derived tibia heals with mesoderm-derived stem cells. We evaluated 14 consecutive periosteal transplantations to treat osteochondritis dissecans lesions of the femoral condyle. 1 year postoperatively, 9 knees were pain-free, but with 6-9 years follow-up, only 2 knees were pain-free. Formation of hyaline-like cartilage, assessed in 12 knees, was documented in 1 patients and assessed as possible in 1 more, but in 10 patients the tissue formed in the defects was not or probably not hyaline cartilage. 6 knees had developed arthrosis.

The presence of signs of joint involvement was investigated in 231 patients with erythema chronicum migrans Afzelius (ECMA), in 50 patients with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA), in four patients with spirochete-induced facial palsy and in one patient with pericarditis and serologic evidence of Borrelia spirochetal infection. The pericranium is the source of multiple, dependable, well-vascularized flaps which are of use to the plastic and reconstructive surgeon for multiple defects of the face and skull. Based anteriorly, the flap can cover the entire central third of the face or be transposed intracranially to correct abnormalities of the cribriform plate and dura. Based laterally on the temporalis muscle, the flap can be turned to multiple arcs for reconstruction of the face, ear, and intracranial defects. Donor-site morbidity and complications have been minimal.

Profound bone loss occurs following spinal cord injury (SCI) resulting in a high incidence of fractures. While likely caused in part by loss of weight-bearing, there is greater bone loss following SCI when compared to that observed in other disuse animal models.
