Machine learning prediction of CKD progression in hyperglycemic elderly adults: a prospective community cohort study.

Hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). This multicenter prospective study developed and validated a machine learning (ML) model to predict CKD risk in prediabetic and diabetic populations for early intervention, following TRIPOD+AI guidelines. Participants were enrolled from four communities, with three sites providing training (80%) and internal test (20%) datasets, and the fourth for external validation. Five ML algorithms were constructed, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) was applied to interpret the optimal model. The XGBoost model showed excellent p

Predictors of self-reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men in 54 low and middle income countries (LMICs): a comparison of deep learning and classical machine learning algorithms.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a global health challenge, with 374 million new cases annually. Among men, STIs cause serious complications, increase the risk of HIV infection, and contribute to stigma and economic burdens, especially in low and middle income countries. Traditional models often miss complex risk interactions, while machine learning and deep learning offer stronger predictive tools. This study applied deep learning and traditional machine learning algorithms to predict self-reported STIs and to model predictors of self-reported STIs among men in 54 L

Machine Learning Modeling of Hospital Length of Stay After Breast Cancer Surgery: Comparison of Random Forest and Linear Regression Approaches.

Background and Objectives: Hospital length of stay (LOS) after breast cancer surgery is a key indicator of postoperative recovery, healthcare quality, and hospital resource utilization. Traditional statistical approaches have identified general correlates of LOS but remain limited in predictive accuracy, particularly in heterogeneous real-world surgical populations. Machine learning (ML) models may offer improved performance by capturing nonlinear interactions among clinical, pathological, and operative factors. This study aimed to evaluate ML algorithms for LOS prediction and to identify dete

Outcome Prediction in Clinical Treatment Processes.

Clinical outcome prediction, as strong implications for health service delivery of clinical treatment processes (CTPs), is important for both patients and healthcare providers. Prior studies typically use a priori knowledge, such as demographics or patient physical factors, to estimate clinical outcomes at early stages of CTPs (e.g., admission). They lack the ability to deal with temporal evolution of CTPs. In addition, most of the existing studies employ data mining or machine learning methods to generate a prediction model for a specific type of clinical outcome, however, a mathematical mode

Performance of screening algorithms in systemic sclerosis-related pulmonary arterial hypertension: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a major cause of mortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc). There is emerging evidence that screening may enable the earlier detection and treatment of SSc-PAH, and thereby improve survival. AIMS: We undertook a systematic review to evaluate the performance of current screening algorithms in SSc-PAH. METHODS: We searched the Medline and EMBASE databases to 31 March 2012. We selected studies if they applied a screening algorithm to consecutively enrolled SSc patients not known to have PAH; SSc-PAH had to be confirmed on right heart catheterisat

A new diagnostic algorithm for assessment of patients with single ventricle before a Fontan operation.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac catheterization has a low diagnostic yield before a Fontan operation, and magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography are reliable alternatives to invasive angiography. A new diagnostic algorithm to avoid cardiac catheterization in "low-risk" subjects before a Fontan operation is proposed. METHODS: The proposed algorithm would identify "high-risk" subjects on the basis of risk factors on medical history, echocardiography, and noninvasive angiography. The efficacy of this algorithm in screening for subjects deemed to be inoperable after catheterization was evaluated

Railway curve squeal prediction using environmental variables.

INTRODUCTION: Curve squeal is a loud tonal noise from railway traffic that contributes to environmental noise pollution. Squealing arises from friction-induced vibrations in the wheel-rail contact during vehicle curving under specific friction conditions. Environmental factors are known to influence these friction conditions and, consequently, the tendency of squeal occurrence. This study investigates whether environmental variables measured from the wayside of the track can be used to predict curve squeal using machine learning models. METHODS: Separate prediction models were developed for l

EEG epilepsy seizure prediction: the post-processing stage as a chronology.

Almost one-third of epileptic patients fail to achieve seizure control through anti-epileptic drug administration. In the scarcity of completely controlling a patient's epilepsy, seizure prediction plays a significant role in clinical management and providing new therapeutic options such as warning or intervention devices. Seizure prediction algorithms aim to identify the preictal period that Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals can capture. However, this period is associated with substantial heterogeneity, varying among patients or even between seizures from the same patient. The present work p…

Estimation method for karst carbon sinks on the basis of a concentration prediction model.

Karstification can reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere/soil. Accurate estimation of karst carbon sinks is crucial for the study of global climate change. In this study, the Lijiang River Basin was taken as the research area. On the basis of the measured dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration data from 14 consecutive months, the relationships of DIC and DOC to elevation, slope, aspect, rainfall, and temperature were established. Among six regression algorithms, the random forest (RF), boosted regression tree (BRT) and BP neural network (BP)

Left atrial reservoir strain provides incremental value to left atrial volume index for evaluation of left ventricular filling pressure.

BACKGROUND: Left atrial analysis is employed in diastolic assessment with left atrial volume index (LAVI) incorporated in the 2016 ASE/EACVI diastology guideline algorithm. LAVI has sub-optimal correlation with invasive left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) and incorporation of left atrial reservoir strain (LASr) may improve diastolic assessment. METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study of 139 patients was undertaken with all patients undergoing transthoracic echocardiography immediately prior to cardiac catheterization with invasive evaluation of LVFP.
