A retinally stabilized object readily undergoes perceptual fading and disappears from consciousness. This startling phenomenon is commonly believed to arise from local bottom-up sensory adaptation to edge information that occurs early in the visual pathway, such as in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus or retinal ganglion cells. Here we use random dot stereograms to generate perceivable contours or shapes that are not present on the retina and ask whether perceptual fading occurs for such "cortical" contours. Our results show that perceptual fading occurs for "cortical" contours an

A synaptic arrangement underlying descending inhibition from the locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus (LC/SC) on visceral nociceptive transmission in the spinal cord was investigated in the anesthetized rat. Extracellular recordings were made from the L(6)-S(2) segmental level using a carbon filament glass microelectrode (4-6 MΩ). Colorectal distention (CRD) was produced by inflating a balloon inside the descending colon and rectum. All neurons tested responded to both CRD and to cutaneous pinch (a force of 613 g/mm(2)), indicating that nociceptive signals from visceral organs and nociceptive signals

People with autism have a number of reported deficits in object recognition and global processing. Is there a low-level spatial integration deficit associated with this? We measured spatial-form-coherence detection thresholds using a Glass stimulus in a field of random dots, and compared performance to a similar motion-coherence task. A coherent visual patch was depicted by dots separated by a rotational transformation in space (form) or space-time (motion). To measure parallel visual integration, stimuli were presented for only 250 ms. We compared detection thresholds for children with autism

Visual processing difficulties are often present in Alzheimer's disease (AD), even in its pre-dementia phase (i.e. in mild cognitive impairment, MCI). The default mode network (DMN) modulates the brain connectivity depending on the specific cognitive demand, including visual processes. The aim of the present study was to analyze specific changes in connectivity of the posterior DMN node (i.e. the posterior cingulate cortex and precuneus, PCC/P) associated with visual processing in 17 MCI patients and 15 AD patients as compared to 18 healthy controls (HC) using functional magnetic resonance ima

UNLABELLED: Due to capacity limits on perception, conditions of high perceptual load lead to reduced processing of unattended stimuli (Lavie et al., 2014). Accumulating work demonstrates the effects of visual perceptual load on visual cortex responses, but the effects on auditory processing remain poorly understood. Here we establish the neural mechanisms underlying "inattentional deafness"--the failure to perceive auditory stimuli under high visual perceptual load. Participants performed a visual search task of low (target dissimilar to nontarget items) or high (target similar to nontarget it

Navigating is a complex cognitive task that places high demands on spatial abilities, particularly in the absence of sight. Significant advances have been made in identifying the neural correlates associated with various aspects of this skill; however, how the brain is able to navigate in the absence of visual experience remains poorly understood. Furthermore, how neural network activity relates to the wide variability in navigational independence and skill in the blind population is also unknown. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neural correlates of audio-based

The occipital and parietal lobes contain regions that are recruited for both visual and haptic object processing. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the underlying neural mechanisms for bimodal integration of vision and haptics in these visuo-haptic object-selective brain regions to find out whether these brain regions are sites of neuronal or areal convergence. Our sensory conditions consisted of visual-only (V), haptic-only (H), and visuo-haptic (VH), which allowed us to evaluate integration using the superadditivity metric. We also presented each stimulus condition at two

The mismatch negativity (MMN) and the P3a have so far only sparsely been used to investigate neural correlates of impulsivity. This study compares the MMN, P3a, and P3b between individuals with and without the propensity for impulsive, uncontrollable outbursts of temper (referred to here as moderate Intermittent Explosive Disorder, mIED). The MMN reflects automatic change detection, whereas the P3a reflects involuntary attentional mechanisms. Both MMN and P3a can be elicited in the absence of attention. Results showed that the P3a was significantly smaller in the mIED group compared to the con

Visual perception of a stimulus is a function of the visual context in which it is displayed. Surround suppression is a specific form of contextual modulation whereby the perceived contrast of a center stimulus is decreased by a high-contrast surround. Recent studies have demonstrated that individuals with schizophrenia are less prone to visual contextual effects, suggesting impairments in cortical lateral connectivity. We tested whether altered contextual modulation in schizophrenia is stimulus orientation selective. Participants viewed an annulus consisting of contrast-reversing sinusoidal g

The parietal regions implicated in spatially selective attention differ between patient lesion studies and functional imaging of the intact brain. We aimed to resolve this discordance. In a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping study in 20 ischemic stroke patients, we applied the same cognitive subtraction approach as in 23 healthy volunteers who underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using identical tasks and stimuli. An instructive central cue directed attention to one visual quadrant. After a brief delay, a grating appeared in that quadrant together with an irrelevant grating i

A total of 77 patients with panic attacks (PA) with and without agoraphobic disorders were studied, along with 28 healthy subjects. Use of clinical-neurological investigation methods was supplemented by psychological methods, EEG recordings, and auditory event-linked evoked potentials (EP). Patients with PA with agoraphobic disorders were found to be characterized by significant decreases in the power density of the alpha rhythm and increases in the power density of the beta rhythm in the right hemisphere, reflecting significant activation of the ascending mesencephalic reticular formation; th

According to a classical view of visual object recognition, targets are detected "pre-attentively" if they carry unique features, whereas attention has to be deployed serially to object locations for feature binding if the targets can be distinguished from distracters only in terms of their feature conjunctions. Consistent with this view, recent reports suggest a contribution of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC; one major region controlling spatial attention) to conjunction search as opposed to feature search. However, PPC engagement in conjunction search might also reflect feature-based att

The Poggendorff illusion refers to the phenomenon that the human brain misperceives a diagonal line as being apparently misaligned once the diagonal line is interrupted by two parallel edges, and the size of illusion is negatively correlated with the angle of interception of the oblique, i.e. the sharper the oblique angle, the larger the illusion. This optical illusion can be produced by both real and illusory contour. In this fMRI study, by parametrically varying the oblique angle, we investigated the shared and specific neural mechanisms underlying the Poggendorff illusion induced by real an

BACKGROUND: Macular Degeneration (MD), a visual disease that produces central vision loss, is one of the main causes of visual disability in western countries. Patients with MD are forced to use a peripheral retinal locus (PRL) as a substitute of the fovea. However, the poor sensitivity of this region renders basic everyday tasks very hard for MD patients.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether perceptual learning (PL) with lateral masking in the PRL of MD patients, improved their residual visual functions.
METHOD: Observers were trained with two distinct contrast detection tasks: (i) a Yes/No t

UNLABELLED: Somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) is defined as the shortest time interval necessary for a pair of tactile stimuli to be perceived as separate. Although STDT is altered in several neurological disorders, its neural bases are not entirely clear. We used continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to condition the excitability of the primary somatosensory cortex in healthy humans to examine its possible contribution to STDT. Excitability was assessed using the recovery cycle of the N20 component of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and the area of high-frequenc

Noise trauma, aging, and ototoxicity preferentially damage the outer hair cells of the inner ear, leading to increased hearing thresholds and poorer frequency resolution. Whereas outer hair cells make synaptic connections with less than 10% of afferent auditory nerve fibers (type-II), inner hair cells make connections with over 90% of afferents (type-I). Despite these extensive connections, little is known about how selective inner hair cell loss impacts hearing. In chinchillas, moderate to high doses of the anticancer compound carboplatin produce selective inner hair cell and type-I afferent

Spatial magnitude and phase profiles for inner hair cell (IHC) depolarization throughout the chinchilla cochlea were inferred from responses of auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) to threshold- and moderate-level tones and tone complexes. Firing-rate profiles for frequencies ≤2 kHz are bimodal, with the major peak at the characteristic place and a secondary peak at 3-5 mm from the extreme base. Response-phase trajectories are synchronous with peak outward stapes displacement at the extreme cochlear base and accumulate 1.5 period lags at the characteristic places. High-frequency phase trajectories are

Itch is an aversive sensory experience and while systemic therapies, such as acupuncture, have shown promise in alleviating itch in patients suffering from chronic itch, their antipruritic mechanisms are unknown. As several lines of evidence implicate brain-focused mechanisms, we applied functional magnetic resonance imaging and our validated temperature-modulation itch model to evaluate the underlying brain circuitry supporting allergen-induced itch reduction in atopic dermatitis patients by acupuncture, antihistamine, and respective placebo treatments. Brain response to allergen itch demonst

This study investigated the temporal stability and longitudinal replicability of visual and auditory sensory processes found to be poor in children with dyslexia. Seventy children with dyslexia and 52 normal readers were tested twice, 9 months apart, on measures of visual and auditory sensory processing and on phonological and orthographic skills. About 30% of children with dyslexia were found to have sensory deficits. Associations were found between sensory and cognitive skills. Based on analyses of agreement, the temporal stability of the sensory tasks was poor. Future research should develo

We have recently shown that intrinsic fluctuations of ongoing activity during baseline have an impact on perceptual decisions reported for an ambiguous visual stimulus (Hesselmann et al., 2008). To test whether this result generalizes from the visual object domain to other perceptual and neural systems, the current study investigated the effect of ongoing signal fluctuations in motion-sensitive brain regions on the perception of coherent visual motion. We determined motion coherence thresholds individually for each subject using a dynamic random dot display. During functional magnetic resonanc
