Virtual Reality-Based Psychotherapy in Social Anxiety Disorder: fMRI Study Using a Self-Referential Task.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been well demonstrated that the efficacy of virtual reality therapy for social anxiety disorder is comparable to that of traditional cognitive behavioral therapy, little is known about the effect of virtual reality on pathological self-referential processes in individuals with social anxiety disorder. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine changes in self-referential processing and their neural mechanisms following virtual reality treatment. METHODS: We recruited participants with and without a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder to undergo clinical assessments

Reconceptualizing addiction as metabolic-arousal dysregulation: a structured theory-synthesis across neurobiological, physiological and psychological domains.

BACKGROUND: Prevailing models of addiction emphasize reward dysregulation, stress neuroadaptation and impaired executive control, but typically treat metabolic disturbance as secondary. Convergent evidence across neuroimaging, physiological and endocrine domains suggests that instability in energy mobilization and utilization may play a more central role in addiction-related neuroadaptation than is currently formalized. OBJECTIVE: To develop a structured theory-synthesis reconceptualizing addiction as a disorder of metabolic-arousal regulation. METHODS: A theory-synthesis approach was applie

Students' Conceptions of Animal Emotions and Cognitive Abilities in Karamoja (Uganda): Implications for Animal Welfare Education and One Health.

Pastoralist communities in Karamoja maintain close, multifaceted relationships with animals from early childhood, yet little is known about how children conceptualise animal emotions and cognitive abilities. This pilot study explored these conceptions among Kasimeri Primary School students in Karamoja, Uganda, within the AICS All-In-One Project (AID 012590/04/1). A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire administered to 326 students (mean age 13 ± 2 years). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and generalised linear models (GLMs). Most children attribut

Spatiotemporal psychopathology I: No rest for the brain's resting state activity in depression? Spatiotemporal psychopathology of depressive symptoms.

Despite intense neurobiological investigation in psychiatric disorders like major depressive disorder (MDD), the basic disturbance that underlies the psychopathological symptoms of MDD remains, nevertheless, unclear. Neuroimaging has focused mainly on the brain's extrinsic activity, specifically task-evoked or stimulus-induced activity, as related to the various sensorimotor, affective, cognitive, and social functions. Recently, the focus has shifted to the brain's intrinsic activity, otherwise known as its resting state activity. While various abnormalities have been observed during this acti

Emotion/cognition-coupling in word recognition memory of depressive patients: an event-related potential study.

Depressive patients show deficits in memory functions. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Experiments with a special emphasis on the link between emotion and cognition appear challenging. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the emotional content of words on memory in non-medicated depressive patients (n=11) compared with a control group (n=11) utilizing event-related brain potentials (ERPs). In a continuous word recognition paradigm brain responses to repeated items are characterized by more positive waveforms of ERPs. This recognition effect ('old/new effe

Exploring the relationship between dietary quality, eating behavior, and mental health among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional psychiatry has established that nutrient-dense diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are associated with lower rates of depression and anxiety, while diets high in refined sugars and saturated fats predict greater psychological distress. Although emotion-regulation strategies are known to influence eating behavior, evidence on their role in shaping overall diet quality remains scarce, particularly in Central and Eastern European populations. Young adulthood (18-30 years) represents a critical developmental stage in which both mental health vu

Post-divorce growth: a mixed-methods investigation of how post-traumatic stress shapes growth after divorce.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to examine the relationship between post-traumatic stress (PTS) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) after divorce among divorced individuals and to identify factors influencing growth through quantitative and qualitative findings. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed in two phases. In the first phase, data were collected from 489 participants using a Personal Information Form, the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI). In the second phase, four groups were formed based on high and low scores, and qualitative data wer

Recognizing individual variability in misophonia: Identifying symptom-based subgroups with Gaussian mixture modeling.

Misophonia is characterized by intense emotional and physiological reactions to everyday sounds such as chewing and tapping. While previous researchers have focused on defining and characterizing the disorder, limited attention has been given to the variability in symptom presentations across individuals. In this study, we sought to identify distinct subgroups of individuals with misophonia by applying a Gaussian finite mixture model to explore the heterogeneity of symptom profiles. Sixty treatment-seeking participants completed the Duke Misophonia Interview, which assessed the presence and se

Attenuated symptoms are associated with connectedness and emotional expression in narratives based on emotional pictures in a Brazilian clinical high-risk cohort.

Natural language processing tools have been applied to identify symptoms through the analysis of narratives. Here we use this strategy to map attenuated symptoms when applied to prodromal stages of psychosis. We assessed narratives in a population-based prodromal screen-positive Brazilian cohort of individuals confirmed through structured interview as at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR) (N = 42) or as controls (N = 29) to identify language markers predictive of transition to diagnosis or remission. Participants were identified by screening >4500 individuals with the Prodromal Questionnai

Evaluation of the effectiveness of a 7-week minimal guided and unguided cognitive behavioral therapy-based stress-management APP for students.

Stress during academic training is a significant issue for students, which intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Internet-based stress management programs are an attractive, low-threshold and cost-effective option for students at universities. The present randomized controlled intervention study examined the efficacy of a newly developed seven-week minimal guided (with optional e-Coach support) and unguided stress management training (iSMT) App based on cognitive behavioral therapy techniques (CBT) for university students. Participants (guided iSMT version: n = 118; unguided iSMT version:

The Self-Identification Program (SIP): A Clinically Implemented Third-Wave CBT Deepening Dysfunctional Self-Identification in Mood Disorders.

Third-wave cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT3) have progressively shifted the focus of psychotherapy from symptom reduction to process-based and transdiagnostic mechanisms of change, emphasizing self-identification as a core dimension. Within this evolution, the Self-Identification Program (SIP) represents a conceptual and clinical advancement particularly relevant to mood disorders, where maladaptive self-identification, rumination, and self-judgment play central roles. SIP directly targets dysfunctional self-identification-the reification of transient and maladaptive mental contents as def

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy neurobiology in treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: A domain-related resting-state networks approach.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) stands out as a promising augmentation psychological therapy for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To identify potential predictive and response biomarkers, this study examines the relationship between clinical domains and resting-state network connectivity in OCD patients undergoing a 3-month MBCT programme. Twelve OCD patients underwent two resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging sessions at baseline and after the MBCT programme. We assessed four clinical domains: positive affect, negative affect, anxiety sensitivity, an

Effectiveness of digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia on professional activity: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

This meta-analytic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) on professional activity. We systematically explored PubMed, Web of Science and PsycINFO until August 2023. We targeted randomized controlled trials using dCBT-I and assessing professional activity. We used the standardized mean difference (SMD), and the Der Simonian-Laird random effects model, and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. From the 494 papers initially identified, 11 were finally selected, including 4723 par

Perseverative thinking is associated with features of spoken language.

Perseverative thinking (PT), such as rumination or worry, is a transdiagnostic process implicated in the onset and maintenance of emotional disorders. Existing measures of PT are limited by demand and expectancy effects, cognitive biases, and reflexivity, leading to calls for unobtrusive, behavioral measures. In response, we developed a behavioral measure of PT based on language. A mixed sample of 188 participants with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or no psychopathology completed self-report PT measures. Participants were also interviewed, providing a natural languag

Key factors behind various specific phobia subtypes.

While it has been suggested that more than a quarter of the whole population is at risk of developing some form of specific phobia (SP) during their lives, we still know little about the various risk and protective factors and underlying mechanisms. Moreover, although SPs are distinct mental disorder categories, most studies do not distinguish between them, or stress their differences. Thus, our study was manifold. We examined the psychometric properties of the Specific Phobia Questionnaire (SPQ) and assessed whether it can be used for screening in the general population in a large sample (N =

When thriving requires effortful surviving: Delineating manifestations and resource expenditure outcomes of microaggressions for Black employees.

Although overt racism is condemned by many organizations, insidious forms of racism persist. Drawing on the conservation of resources framework (Hobfoll, 1989), this article identifies forms and outcomes of racial microaggressions-daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities that denigrate individuals from racially minoritized groups (Sue, Capodilupo, et al., 2007). Leveraging survey data from 345 Black employees, open-ended question qualitative insights delineate three overarching themes of workplace microaggression toward Black employees: anti-Black stereotype expression, racializ

Motivational mediation between coping and post-traumatic growth in previously bullied college students.

Research has consistently shown that experiences of peer victimization may have long lasting negative consequences on health and academic achievement. Less attention has been paid to the association between past bullying and post-traumatic growth in college students. This cross-sectional study aims to examine the role of different motivational orientations (The Behavioral Inhibition and Behavioral Activation Systems (BIS/BAS) and regulatory focus) as potential mediators between cognitive strategies (rumination and resilient coping) and post-traumatic growth (PTG). Using a large sample of 1,134

Do trait psychological characteristics moderate sympathetic arousal to racial discrimination exposure in a natural setting?

Personality and psychological traits are known to influence how individuals react to and cope with stress, and thus, have downstream health and aging consequences. However, research considering psychological health traits as individual-level difference factors moderating the links been racism-related stress and health for racial and ethnic minorities in the United States is rare. Using intensive daily diaries and a wearable sensor that continuously recorded sympathetic nervous system arousal in a sample of racial and ethnic minority college students (80% African American, first-generation Blac
