Enhancing heatstroke safety for construction workers: Assessing visibility and contrast of thermochromic pigment.

BackgroundHeat-related illness is a significant occupational hazard requiring effective prevention. The World Health Organization emphasizes that reducing a worker's ability to perform tasks due to extreme heat or cold is a "health effect" of climate conditions. This study proposes a novel safety management approach in construction to prevent heatstroke among workers using thermochromic fibers that change color in response to body temperature, enabling the visual detection of rising heat levels.ObjectiveThis study evaluated the visibility and contrast of blue and pink (red spectrum) fibers at

Rehabilitation With Exergames in Individuals With Moderate to Severe Cognitive Impairment: A Case Report.

A strong correlation exists between the severity of motor impairment and cognitive impairment in people with cerebral palsy. Moreover, severe cognitive impairment is associated with lower capacity for motor learning and hinders motor rehabilitation. In this report, we describe the effects of a therapeutic exercise protocol with exergames (TEP-Exergame) on postural control and spasticity of two young adults with spastic tetraplegia and moderate to severe cognitive impairment. Spasticity was measured in the elbow flexors using the Modified Ashworth Scale, and postural control was assessed throug

The Impact of Pathogens on Sepsis Prevalence and Outcome.

Sepsis, a severe global healthcare challenge, is characterized by significant morbidity and mortality. The 2016 redefinition by the Third International Consensus Definitions Task Force emphasizes its complexity as a "life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection". Bacterial pathogens, historically dominant, exhibit geographic variations, influencing healthcare strategies. The intricate dynamics of bacterial immunity involve recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns, triggering innate immune responses and inflammatory cascades. Dysregulation lea

Age-Related Changes in Episodic Processing of Scenes: A Functional Activation and Connectivity Study.

The posterior-to-anterior shift in aging (PASA) effect is seen as a compensatory model that enables older adults to meet increased cognitive demands to perform comparably as their young counterparts. However, empirical support for the PASA effect investigating age-related changes in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), hippocampus, and parahippocampus has yet to be established. 33 older adults and 48 young adults were administered tasks sensitive to novelty and relational processing of indoor/outdoor scenes in a 3-Tesla MRI scanner. Functional activation and connectivity analyses were applied to

Conserved features of eye movement related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs) across humans and monkeys.

Auditory and visual information involve different coordinate systems, with auditory spatial cues anchored to the head and visual spatial cues anchored to the eyes. Information about eye movements is therefore critical for reconciling visual and auditory spatial signals. The recent discovery of eye movement-related eardrum oscillations (EMREOs) suggests that this process could begin as early as the auditory periphery. How this reconciliation might happen remains poorly understood. Because humans and monkeys both have mobile eyes and therefore both must perform this shift of reference frames, co

Child Neurology: Functional Reorganization Mediating Supplementary Motor Area Syndrome Recovery in Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

Supplementary motor area (SMA) syndrome is a typically transient condition resulting from damage to the medial premotor cortex. The exact mechanism of recovery remains unknown but is traditionally described as a process involving functional compensation by the contralateral SMA through corpus callosal fibers. The purpose of this case study is to highlight a distinct extracallosal mechanism of functional recovery from an SMA syndrome in a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). We present the clinical presentation and perioperative functional neuroimaging features of a 16-year-old p

The role of the arousal system in age-related differences in cortical functional network architecture.

A common finding in the aging literature is that of the brain's decreased within- and increased between-network functional connectivity. However, it remains unclear what is causing this shift in network organization with age. Given the essential role of the ascending arousal system (ARAS) in cortical activation and previous findings of disrupted ARAS functioning with age, it is possible that age differences in ARAS functioning contribute to disrupted cortical connectivity. We test this possibility here using resting state fMRI data from over 500 individuals across the lifespan from the Cambrid

Speed Adaptable Prosthetic Foot: Concept Description, Prototyping and Initial User Testing.

This article presents a novel design of a prosthetic foot that features adaptable stiffness that changes according to the speed of ankle motion. The motivation is the natural graduation in stiffness of a biological ankle over a range of ambulation tasks. The device stiffness depends on rate of movement, ranging from a dissipating support at very slow walking speed, to efficient energy storage and return at normal walking speed. The objective here is to design a prosthetic foot that provides a compliant support for slow ambulation, without sacrificing the spring-like energy return beneficial in

Does Acute Stress Impact Declarative and Procedural Learning?

It is well established that acute stress can influence memory function, yet its influence may differ across memory systems. Whereas stress sometimes exerts a negative influence on declarative learning, it does not necessarily harm learning in general, as demonstrated in the case of procedural learning. Probabilistic category learning is mediated by the striatum, but delaying feedback by a few seconds shifts learning to become more hippocampal-dependent. Here, we examined the influence of acute stress on this type of learning, under different conditions that favor either procedural-based (immed

Repetitive Control for Multi-Joint Arm Movements Based on Virtual Trajectories.

According to the neuromuscular model of virtual trajectory control, the postures and movements of limbs are performed by shifting the equilibrium positions determined by agonist and antagonist muscle activities. In this study, we develop virtual trajectory control for the reaching movements of a multi-joint arm, introducing a proportional-derivative feedback control scheme. In virtual trajectory control, it is crucial to design a suitable virtual trajectory such that the desired trajectory can be realized. To this end, we propose an algorithm for updating virtual trajectories in repetitive con

Not yet 90-90-90: A quality improvement approach to human immunodeficiency virus viral suppression in paediatric patients in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: A strategy implemented by the South African Department of Health to manage the high burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been to task-shift services to primary health care clinics. Outcomes of paediatric patients with HIV are poorer than those of adults, particularly in rural areas. Viral suppression in paediatric patients at the feeder clinics of a rural South African hospital was anecdotally far below the aim of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) of 90%. METHODS: A quality improvement approach was used to conduct a baseline assessment of HIV vira

Brain activation in highly superior autobiographical memory: The role of the precuneus in the autobiographical memory retrieval network.

This is the first study to examine functional brain activation in a single case of Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) who shows no sign of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). While previous work has documented the existence of HSAM, information about brain areas involved in this exceptional form of memory for personal events relies on structural and resting state connectivity data, with mixed results so far. In this first task-based functional magnetic resonance Imaging (fMRI) study of a normal individual with HSAM, dates were presented as cues and two phases were assessed during

Aging and risky decision-making: New ERP evidence from the Iowa Gambling Task.

Several pieces of evidence have highlighted the presence of an age-related decline in risky decision-making (DM), but the reason of this decline is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neural correlates of feedback processing in risky DM. Twenty-one younger (age <50 years) and 15 older (age >50 years) adults were tested with the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) during Event Related Potentials (ERP) recording. The analysis was focused on the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and P3, two ERP components that represent different stages of feedback processing. Behavioral resul

Towards remote monitoring of Parkinson's disease tremor using wearable motion capture systems.

The management of movement disorders is shifting from a centralized-clinical assessment towards remote monitoring and individualized therapy. While a variety of treatment options are available, ranging from pharmaceutical drugs to invasive neuromodulation, the clinical effects are inconsistent and often poorly measured. For instance, the lack of remote monitoring has been a major limitation to optimize therapeutic interventions for patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD). In this work, we focus on the assessment of full-body tremor as the most recognized PD symptom. Forty PD and twenty two heal

Multi-step treatment for acquired alexia and agraphia (part II): a dual-route error scoring system.

Dual-route neuropsychological models posit two distinct but interrelated pathways for reading and writing: the lexical and the sublexical. Individuals with reading/writing deficits often rely on the combined power of the integrated system to perform print-processing tasks. The resultant errors reflect varying degrees of lexical and sublexical accuracy in a single production; however, no system presently exists to analyze errors robustly in both routes. The goal of this project was to develop a system that simultaneously, quantitatively, and qualitatively captures changes in lexical and sublexi

Phonological abilities in literacy-impaired children: Brain potentials reveal deficient phoneme discrimination, but intact prosodic processing.

Intact phonological processing is crucial for successful literacy acquisition. While individuals with difficulties in reading and spelling (i.e., developmental dyslexia) are known to experience deficient phoneme discrimination (i.e., segmental phonology), findings concerning their prosodic processing (i.e., suprasegmental phonology) are controversial. Because there are no behavior-independent studies on the underlying neural correlates of prosodic processing in dyslexia, these controversial findings might be explained by different task demands. To provide an objective behavior-independent pict

The extended trajectory of hippocampal development: Implications for early memory development and disorder.

Hippocampus has an extended developmental trajectory, with refinements occurring in the trisynaptic circuit until adolescence. While structural change should suggest a protracted course in behavior, some studies find evidence of precocious hippocampal development in the first postnatal year and continuity in memory processes beyond. However, a number of memory functions, including binding and relational inference, can be cortically supported. Evidence from the animal literature suggests that tasks often associated with hippocampus (visual paired comparison, binding of a visuomotor response) ca

Maturation and experience in action representation: Bilateral deficits in unilateral congenital amelia.

Congenital unilateral absence of the hand (amelia) completely deprives individuals of sensorimotor experiences with their absent effector. The consequences of such deprivation on motor planning abilities are poorly understood. Fourteen patients and matched controls performed two grip selection tasks: 1) overt grip selection (OGS), in which they used their intact hand to grasp a three-dimensional object that appeared in different orientations using the most natural (under-or over-hand) precision grip, and 2) prospective grip selection (PGS), in which they selected the most natural grip for eith

Individual differences in gambling proneness among rats and common marmosets: an automated choice task.

Interest is rising for animal modeling of pathological gambling. Using the operant probabilistic-delivery task (PDT), gambling proneness can be evaluated in laboratory animals. Drawing a comparison with rats, this study evaluated the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) using a PDT. By nose- or hand-poking, subjects learnt to prefer a large (LLL, 5-6 pellets) over a small (SS, 1-2 pellets) reward and, subsequently, the probability of occurrence of large-reward delivery was decreased progressively to very low levels (from 100% to 17% and 14%). As probability decreased, subjects showed a great v

The role of serotonin in nonnormative risky choice: the effects of tryptophan supplements on the "reflection effect" in healthy adult volunteers.

Risky decision-making involves weighing good and bad outcomes against their probabilities in order to determine the relative values of candidate actions. Although human decision-making sometimes conforms to rational models of how this weighting is achieved, irrational (or nonnormative) patterns of risky choice, including shifts between risk-averse and risk-seeking choices involving equivalent-value gambles (the "reflection effect"), are frequently observed. In the present experiment, we investigated the role of serotonin in decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. Fifteen healthy adult
