Brain imaging study of the acute effects of Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on attention and motor coordination in regular users of marijuana.

PROCEDURE: Twelve regular users of marijuana underwent two positron emission tomography (PET) scans using [18F] Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), one while subject to the effects of 17 mg THC, the other without THC. In both sessions, a virtual reality maze task was performed during the FDG uptake period. RESULTS: When subject to the effects of 17 mg THC, regular marijuana smokers hit the walls more often on the virtual maze task than without THC. Compared to results without THC, 17 mg THC increased brain metabolism during task performance in areas that are associated with motor coordination and atten

The use of virtual fluoroscopy in managing acute type II odontoid fracture with anterior single-screw fixation. A safe, effective, elegant and fast form of treatment.

BACKGROUND: The management of odontoid fractures represents both a clinical and a technical challenge due to the singular anatomy and biomechanics of the region. At present there is still much controversy as far as any form of management (surgical vs. conservative) is concerned and in any case there is not sufficient evidence to support a standardized form of treatment. This study was designed to further evaluate safety and efficacy of anterior odontoid single-screw fixation and to better determine the usefulness of Image Guided Surgery Virtual Fluoroscopy in treating such cases assessing also

A Biomimetic Human-Robot Interface for Natural Cooperative Ankle Movement in Healthy and Post-Stroke Subjects.

Although movement efficiency and smoothness are fundamental optimality principles in human motor control, few human-robot interfaces effectively integrate these two principles during human-robot interaction. To address this, we proposed a biomimetic human-robot interface (BHRI) by cascading an EMG-driven neuromechanical model with a minimum-jerk motor behavior model. To decode continuous motion intentions, a neuromechanical model was established to estimate voluntary ankle torque based on EMG signals. The voluntary torque then served as the input for a motor behavior model, which generated rob

Virtual Double-System Single-Box: A Nonequilibrium Alchemical Technique for Absolute Binding Free Energy Calculations: Application to Ligands of the SARS-CoV-2 Main Protease.

In the context of drug-receptor binding affinity calculations using molecular dynamics techniques, we implemented a combination of Hamiltonian replica exchange (HREM) and a novel nonequilibrium alchemical methodology, called virtual double-system single-box, with increased accuracy, precision, and efficiency with respect to the standard nonequilibrium approaches. The method has been applied for the determination of absolute binding free energies of 16 newly designed noncovalent ligands of the main protease (3CLpro) of SARS-CoV-2. The core structures of 3CLpro ligands were previously identified

Transtibial amputee gait during slope walking with the unity suspension system.

BACKGROUND: People with lower limb amputation may experience walking limitations on slopes because of missing musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. Elevated vacuum suspension could benefit transtibial amputee gait for slope walking, but research is lacking to inform clinical practice. METHODS: Twelve people with unilateral transtibial amputation were fitted with the Unity elevated vacuum suspension system (Össur) and Pro-Flex XC foot. 3D motion analysis was performed for 7° incline, 7° decline, and level walking within a CAREN-Extended system virtual Park environment. Randomized and blin

Decision support for evidence-based integration of disease control: A proof of concept for malaria and schistosomiasis.

Designing and implementing effective programs for infectious disease control requires complex decision-making, informed by an understanding of the diseases, the types of disease interventions and control measures available, and the disease-relevant characteristics of the local community. Though disease modeling frameworks have been developed to address these questions and support decision-making, the complexity of current models presents a significant barrier to on-the-ground end users. The picture is further complicated when considering approaches for integration of different disease control

Novel Transforming Growth Factor-Beta Receptor 1 Antagonists through a Pharmacophore-Based Virtual Screening Approach.

As new drugs for the treatment of malignant tumors, transforming growth factor-beta receptor 1 (TGFβR1) antagonists have attracted wide attention. Based on the crystal structure of TGFβR1-BMS22 complex, the pharmacophore model A02 with two hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and four hydrophobic (HYD) properties was constructed. From the common features of active ligands reported in the literature, pharmacophore model B10 was also generated, which has two aromatic ring centers (RAs) and two HYD properties. The two models have high sensitivity and specificity to the training set, and they are highly

Mirrored feedback in chronic stroke: recruitment and effective connectivity of ipsilesional sensorimotor networks.

BACKGROUND: Mirrored feedback has potential as a therapeutic intervention to restore hand function after stroke. However, the functional (effective) connectivity of neural networks involved in processing mirrored feedback after stroke is not known. OBJECTIVE: To determine if regions recruited by mirrored feedback topographically overlap with those involved in control of the paretic hand and to identify the effective connectivity of activated nodes within the mirrored feedback network. METHODS: Fifteen patients with chronic stroke performed a finger flexion task with their unaffected hand dur

Molecular dynamic simulation and inhibitor prediction of cysteine synthase structured model as a potential drug target for trichomoniasis.

In our presented research, we made an attempt to predict the 3D model for cysteine synthase (A2GMG5_TRIVA) using homology-modeling approaches. To investigate deeper into the predicted structure, we further performed a molecular dynamics simulation for 10 ns and calculated several supporting analysis for structural properties such as RMSF, radius of gyration, and the total energy calculation to support the predicted structured model of cysteine synthase. The present findings led us to conclude that the proposed model is stereochemically stable. The overall PROCHECK G factor for the homology-mod

Upper extremity rehabilitation of stroke: facilitation of corticospinal excitability using virtual mirror paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Several experimental studies in stroke patients suggest that mirror therapy and various virtual reality programs facilitate motor rehabilitation. However, the underlying mechanisms for these therapeutic effects have not been previously described. OBJECTIVES: We attempted to delineate the changes in corticospinal excitability when individuals were asked to exercise their upper extremity using a real mirror and virtual mirror. Moreover, we attempted to delineate the role of visual modulation within the virtual environment that affected corticospinal excitability in healthy subjects

Detection of bladder cancer recurrence with real-time three-dimensional ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy.

This prospective study evaluated the accuracy of grey-scale two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonography and real-time threedimensional (3D) ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy for detecting early recurrence of bladder cancer in previously treated patients (n = 40). Real-time 3D ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy images were compared with both 2D ultrasonography and interval conventional cystoscopy pathology results. Ultrasound examinations were performed before routine follow-up with conventional cystoscopy. Overall sensitivity for real-time 3D ultrasonography-based virtual cystoscopy was

[Web-based evidence of treatment capacity. An instrument for optimizing the interface between prehospital and hospital management].

BACKGROUND: The outcome of injured patients depends on intrastractural circumstances as well as on the time until clinical treatment begins. A rapid patient allocation can only be achieved occur if informations about the care capacity status of the medical centers are available. Considering this an improvement at the interface prehospital/clinical care seems possible. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In 2010 in Frankfurt am Main the announcement of free capacity (positive proof) was converted to a web-based negative proof of interdisciplinary care capacities. So-called closings are indicated in a web por

Spatial and temporal aspects of navigation in two neurological patients.

We present two cases (A.C. and W.J.) with navigation problems resulting from parieto-occipital right hemisphere damage. For both the cases, performance on the neuropsychological tests did not indicate specific impairments in spatial processing, despite severe subjective complaints of spatial disorientation. Various aspects of navigation were tested in a new virtual reality task, the Virtual Tübingen task. A double dissociation between spatial and temporal deficits was found; A.C. was impaired in route ordering, a temporal test, whereas W.J. was impaired in scene recognition and route continuat

Impact of mode of display and message content of responsible gambling signs for electronic gaming machines on regular gamblers.

Harm-minimization strategies aim to reduce gambling-related risks; however, minimal evidence supports the effectiveness of current strategies involving the placement of warning signs in gambling venues and on electronic gaming machines (EGMs). This qualitative replication study evaluated the differential effect of pop-up messages compared to static signs and the content of messages on EGMs on recall, thoughts, and behaviors assessed during the session and at 2-week follow-up. In Study 1, 127 regular EGM gamblers (male = 97, mean age = 20.3) recruited from a university student population attend

Prospective, blinded, randomized crossover study of gait rehabilitation in stroke patients using the Lokomat gait orthosis.

OBJECTIVE: Treadmill training with partial body weight support has been suggested as a useful strategy for gait rehabilitation after stroke. This prospective, blinded, randomized controlled study of gait retraining tested the feasibility and potential efficacy of using an electromechanical-driven gait orthosis (Lokomat) for treadmill training. METHODS: Sixteen stroke patients, mostly within 3 months after onset, were randomized into 2 treatment groups, ABA or BAB (A = 3 weeks of Lokomat training, B = 3 weeks of conventional physical therapy) for 9 weeks of treatment. The outcome measures were

High-Throughput GoMiner, an 'industrial-strength' integrative gene ontology tool for interpretation of multiple-microarray experiments, with application to studies of Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID).

BACKGROUND: We previously developed GoMiner, an application that organizes lists of 'interesting' genes (for example, under-and overexpressed genes from a microarray experiment) for biological interpretation in the context of the Gene Ontology. The original version of GoMiner was oriented toward visualization and interpretation of the results from a single microarray (or other high-throughput experimental platform), using a graphical user interface. Although that version can be used to examine the results from a number of microarrays one at a time, that is a rather tedious task, and original G

Development of an indoor rowing machine with manual FES controller for total body exercise in paraplegia.

Concept 2 indoor rowing machine (Concept 2 Inc., USA) was modified for functional electrical stimulation (FES) rowing exercise in paraplegia. A new seating system provides trunk stability and constrains the leg motion to the sagittal plane. A 4-channel electrical stimulator activates the quadriceps and hamstrings in Drive and Recovery phases of the rowing cycle, respectively. Two force-sensing resistors (FSR) on the handle measure the thumb press as the command signal to the electrical stimulator. Optical encoders measure the positions of the seat and handle during rowing. To synchronize the v
