Variability of green infrastructure performance due to climatic regimes across Sweden.

In the context of increasing urbanization and global warming, there is a growing interest in the implementation of green infrastructure (GI) across different climates and regions. Identifying an appropriate GI design criteria is essential to ensure that the design is tailored to satisfy local environmental requirements. This article aims to compare the hydrological performance of GI facilities in eleven Swedish cities by isolating the effect of climatic conditions using an identical GI design configuration. Long-term simulations based on 23-years of meteorological time-series were used as inpu

Why do followers feel inauthentic and withdraw? The joint effect of leader Machiavellianism and perceived collectivistic work climate.

OBJECTIVE: Although past research has shown the negative consequences of state inauthenticity (i.e., the experience of inauthenticity), what triggers state inauthenticity remains to be better understood. We focus on leader Machiavellianism (Mach), defined as the extent to which leaders engage in unethical and manipulative behaviors to attain their goals, as a predictor of follower state inauthenticity. Drawing on the social misfit argument, we examined a model in which leader Mach, jointly with a perceived collectivistic work climate, determines follower state inauthenticity and subsequent wor

Obliquity Evolution of the Potentially Habitable Exoplanet Kepler-62f.

Variations in the axial tilt, or obliquity, of terrestrial planets can affect their climates and therefore their habitability. Kepler-62f is a 1.4 R⊕ planet orbiting within the habitable zone of its K2 dwarf host star. We perform N-body simulations that monitor the evolution of obliquity of Kepler-62f for 10-million-year timescales to explore the effects on model assumptions, such as the masses of the Kepler-62 planets and the possibility of outer bodies. Significant obliquity variation occurs when the rotational precession frequency overlaps with one or more of the secular orbital frequencies

Spatially refined aerosol direct radiative forcing efficiencies.

Global aerosol direct radiative forcing (DRF) is an important metric for assessing potential climate impacts of future emissions changes. However, the radiative consequences of emissions perturbations are not readily quantified nor well understood at the level of detail necessary to assess realistic policy options. To address this challenge, here we show how adjoint model sensitivities can be used to provide highly spatially resolved estimates of the DRF from emissions of black carbon (BC), primary organic carbon (OC), sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), and ammonia (NH(3)), using the example of emissions

Medicinal and aromatic plants as climate-smart crops: case studies on Pelargonium graveolens and Viola odorata under Egyptian conditions.

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) represent high-value agricultural commodities that provide economic returns through essential oil production while potentially contributing to climate change mitigation via photosynthetic carbon sequestration and oxygen release. Despite their recognized economic importance, few studies have systematically quantified the net environmental performance of MAP cultivation and processing within integrated climate mitigation frameworks. This study evaluated the carbon footprint, oxygen production, and CO₂ absorption of two commercially important MAPs—Pelargonium

Unravelling the distribution of vectors of major vector-borne diseases in Koshi Province of Nepal: A concern of expansion in diverse geo-ecological and climatic regions.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs), including malaria, visceral leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, Japanese encephalitis, and dengue, are major public health concerns and are either slated for elimination or projected for control in Nepal. One of the major challenges in controlling these VBDs is halting their emergence and expansion in diverse geo-ecological and climatic regions. In this study, we collected vectors of major VBDs to assess their distribution, diversity, and associations with ecological variations and to provide an updated understanding of the current situation. METHODO

Criteria, Greenhouse Gas, and Hazardous Air Pollutant Emissions Factors from Residential Cordwood and Pellet Stoves Using an Integrated Duty Cycle Test Protocol.

Air pollution from residential wood heating (RWH) presents challenges at the intersection of climate and public health. With a revised National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS, at 9 μg/m3) for particulate matter (PM) in the United States (U.S.), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will likely classify new non-attainment areas due primarily to emissions from RWH. Agencies will use emissions factors (EFs) to develop attainment strategies. Many will rely on EPA modeling platforms based on data from the National Emissions Inventory (NEI). The NEI uses RWH EFs based on data from mid-1990'

Benchmarking econometric, decomposable additive, and neural network methods for food inflation prediction featuring policy insights.

With a longstanding struggle to achieve food self-sufficiency, Bangladesh is facing a severe food security crisis, as highlighted by its placement on the World Bank’s “Red List” for food inflation for two consecutive years. Both the World Bank and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) confirm that food inflation has exceeded 10% over the past year. The crisis of rising food costs, attributed to a combination of global, local, and structural issues, is exacerbating socioeconomic hardships for low-income households. It necessitated an in-depth investigation into the external factors influenc

Capacity for national health policy modelling, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates.

Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates) have similar governance structures, economic profiles and health system organization, creating an opportunity for collective action on health. Similarly, these countries have the same challenges including ageing populations, climate and heat risks, immigration, service delivery and disease profiles. We argue for the need to shift from opinion-driven policy discourse to computer-based, decision-focused policy analysis that is participatory, aware of inherent uncertainties surrounding decisio

Testing the feasibility of deep learning approaches to enhance monitoring of marine macroinvertebrates: Insights from a case study using the gastropod Peringia ulvae.

Coastal ecosystems, while vital for their ecosystem services, face growing threats from climate change and human activities. Traditional methods for monitoring these systems, such as morphological species identification and laboratory analysis, are time-consuming and resource-intensive, restricting their scalability. Recent advances in Deep Learning have demonstrated significant potential for automating organism identification and counting from images, streamlining ecological research efforts. Using a common marine gastropod, Peringia ulvae, as a model species, we evaluate the potential for st

Multi-model assessments to characterize occurrences of emerald ash borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

Introduction and spread of nonindigenous species present a formidable threat to forest health. The emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis, is an East Asian-origin insect that has devastated ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees across the United States and parts of Canada since 2002. Proactive surveillance using high-performing predictive models could aid in mitigating pest risk. Predictor variables and modeling methods are important considerations in such analysis. Therefore, we assessed whether relevant single predictors, a combination of predictors grouped under a certain driver category, or mult

Meteorological factors cannot be ignored in machine learning-based methods for predicting dengue, a systematic review.

In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the application of machine learning methods about predicting the incidence of dengue fever. However, the predictive factors and models employed in different studies vary greatly. Hence, we conducted a systematic review to summarize machine learning methods and predictors in previous studies. We searched PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases for articles published up to July 2023. The selected papers included not only the forecast of dengue incidence but also machine learning methods. A total of 23 papers were included in this st

Submesoscale feedback suppresses marine heatwaves.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are devastating extreme ocean temperature events whose frequency and severity have surged under global warming, threatening marine ecosystems and fisheries. Yet, the fundamental mechanisms that control their intensity and persistence remain incompletely understood. Here, using a submesoscale-permitting global model simulation validated by long-term observational and reanalysis data, this study reveals a previously overlooked submesoscale feedback that exerts a critical control on MHW severity. It is demonstrated that the submesoscale-induced vertical heat flux suppresse

Emerging and re-emerging vector-borne and other zoonotic RNA viruses: pathogenesis, climate-driven dynamics, and strategies for global control.

Vector-borne and other zoonotic RNA viruses provide a significant and growing threat to global health, especially in areas where climate change, urbanization, and population growth facilitate the proliferation of arthropod vectors. This review offers an extensive examination of the biology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of numerous important viruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Nipah, Ebola, and hantaviruses. We underscore how environmental and social factors, particularly increasing temperatures, modified precipit

Spatial determinants of diarrheal disease in the Rokel-Seli river watershed, Sierra Leone.

This study used spatial and non-spatial analyses to examine the drivers of diarrheal disease in the Rokel-Seli River watershed, Sierra Leone. Data sources included fecal coliform sampling (E. coli), land use and climate metrics, household surveys (n = 280), and medical records (n = 26,909 episodes from 139 health facilities). A dual modeling strategy: Poisson generalized linear models (GLM) and geographically weighted Poisson regression (GWPR) captured both household-level and subbasin-level predictors. Diarrhea was significantly associated with low educational attainment, inadequate toilet fa

Native-borns and migrants do not contribute equally to domestic CO2 emissions.

While population growth is a known driver of CO2 emissions, prevailing models often treat "population" as a homogeneous factor. This study addresses a critical gap, providing the first comprehensive empirical analysis to disaggregate the contributions of native-born and migrant populations to domestic CO2 emissions. Using an extended STIRPAT model for 172 countries (1990-2022), separated by OECD and non-OECD blocs, we uncover two novel insights. First, native-born populations consistently exhibit a substantially higher emissions elasticity than migrants in both country groups. Second, a dynami

Long-span fiber composite truss made by coreless filament winding for large-scale satellite structural systems demonstrated on a planetary sunshade concept.

Climate change necessitates exploring innovative geoengineering solutions to mitigate its effects-one such solution is deploying planetary sunshade satellites at Sun-Earth Lagrange point 1 to regulate solar radiation on Earth directly. However, such long-span space structures present unique technical challenges, particularly structural scalability, on-orbit manufacturing, and in-situ resource utilization. This paper proposes a structural concept for the sunshade's foil support system and derives from that a component-level modular system for long-span fiber composite lightweight trusses using

Exploring interactions between socioeconomic context and natural hazards on human population displacement.

Climate change is leading to more extreme weather hazards, forcing human populations to be displaced. We employ explainable machine learning techniques to model and understand internal displacement flows and patterns from observational data alone. For this purpose, a large, harmonized, global database of disaster-induced movements in the presence of floods, storms, and landslides during 2016-2021 is presented. We account for environmental, societal, and economic factors to predict the number of displaced persons per event in the affected regions. Here we show that displacements can be primaril
