A case report of inflammatory nonscarring alopecia associated with the epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor erlotinib.

Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs) are new anticancer agents that act by inhibiting EGFR signaling transduction pathways, thus decreasing tumor growth. In more than 30 countries, EGFRIs are currently used in the treatment of a number of solid tumors, and other indications are being sought. In the United States, select EGFRIs have been approved in certain patients with non-small cell lung cancer, metastatic colorectal carcinoma, and advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Various cutaneous side effects of EGFRIs have been reported, including acneiform eruptions,

Prevalence of Malassezia spp. in the ears of asymptomatic cattle and cattle with otitis in Brazil.

Yeasts of the genus Malassezia are lipophilic microorganisms that are saprophytes that can act as opportunistic pathogens in animals. Malassezia pachydermatis is commonly isolated from the ear canal and skin of healthy dogs, or in association with seborrheic dermatitis and otitis externa conditions. The objective of the present study was to determine the occurrence of Malassezia spp. in the ears of healthy bovines and bovines with otitis. Specimens (secretion or cerumen) were collected with sterile swabs, inoculated onto Mycosel medium, supplemented with olive oil, and incubated at 35 degrees

Camellia nitidissima Flower Extract Alleviates Stress-Induced Sebaceous Dysfunction by Targeting the 11β-HSD1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR Axis.

Stress-induced sebaceous hyperactivity is a key driver of acne and seborrheic dermatitis; however, research investigating the pathway-specific mechanisms through which stress exerts its effects and the suppression of sebum production via targeting stress signaling remains relatively limited. In this study, we investigated whether Camellia nitidissima flower extract (CNF) could counteract stress-induced sebaceous dysfunction and its underlying mechanisms. Using a cortisone-stimulated SZ95 human sebocyte model, we evaluated lipid accumulation, cortisol production, signaling pathway activation, a

Malassezia spp. carbonic anhydrases.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are essential metalloenzymes that catalyse the reversible conversion of CO₂ to bicarbonate, playing a crucial role in pH regulation, CO₂ sensing, and metabolic homeostasis. In Malassezia species, β-class CAs have emerged as promising drug targets for antifungal and dermatological applications, particularly in conditions such as dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Among the studied Malassezia species, the carbonic anhydrases from M. globosa (MgCA), M. restricta (MreCA) and M. pachydermatis (MpaCA) have been extensively characterized, demonstrating significant functiona

Data mining for detecting signals of adverse drug reaction of doxycycline using the Korea adverse event reporting system database.

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline is one of the most prescribed antibiotics by dermatologists. However, the concern regarding adverse events of doxycyline has been rising. OBJECTIVE: To detect the adverse events of doxycycline using the Korea Adverse Events Reporting System (KAERS) database from January 2014 to December 2018 through a data mining method. METHODS: A signal was defined as one satisfying all three indices; a proportional reporting ratio, a reporting odds ratio, and an information component. We further checked whether the detected signals exist in drug labels in Korea and five developed c

Discovery of a novel dual fungal CYP51/human 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor: implications for anti-fungal therapy.

We report the discovery of a novel dual inhibitor targeting fungal sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51 or Erg11) and human 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) with improved potency against 5-LOX due to its reduction of the iron center by its phenylenediamine core. A series of potent 5-LOX inhibitors containing a phenylenediamine core, were synthesized that exhibit nanomolar potency and >30-fold selectivity against the LOX paralogs, platelet-type 12-human lipoxygenase, reticulocyte 15-human lipoxygenase type-1, and epithelial 15-human lipoxygenase type-2, and >100-fold selectivity against ovine cyclooxygenase-1 a

The Malassezia genus in skin and systemic diseases.

In the last 15 years, the genus Malassezia has been a topic of intense basic research on taxonomy, physiology, biochemistry, ecology, immunology, and metabolomics. Currently, the genus encompasses 14 species. The 1996 revision of the genus resulted in seven accepted taxa: M. furfur, M. pachydermatis, M. sympodialis, M. globosa, M. obtusa, M. restricta, and M. slooffiae. In the last decade, seven new taxa isolated from healthy and lesional human and animal skin have been accepted: M. dermatis, M. japonica, M. yamatoensis, M. nana, M. caprae, M. equina, and M. cuniculi. However, forthcoming mult

Topical corticosteroids for skin disorders in infants and children.

Topical corticosteroids are an essential part of the treatment regimen of children with atopic eczema and a number of other inflammatory dermatoses, such as infantile seborrhoeic eczema, pompholyx and contact dermatitis. A special form of treatment, the 'wet wrap technique, has been found to be effective in treating children with acute erythrodermic eczema in an inpatient setting. Therapy usually lasts for 3 to 5 days and is useful as crisis intervention therapy. On the other hand, in some conditions, for example pityriasis alba, perioral eczema or juvenile plantar dermatosis, therapy with the
