The global burden of respiratory infections in indigenous children and adults: A review.

This review article focuses on common lower respiratory infections (LRIs) in indigenous populations in both developed and developing countries, where data is available. Indigenous populations across the world share some commonalities including poorer health and socio-economic disadvantage compared with their non-indigenous counterparts. Generally, acute and chronic respiratory infections are more frequent and more severe in both indigenous children and adults, often resulting in substantial consequences including higher rates of bronchiectasis and poorer outcomes for patients with chronic obst…

The worldwide pandemic of asbestos-related diseases.

Asbestos-related diseases are still a major public health problem. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that 107,000 people worldwide die each year from mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. We review what is known about asbestos use, production, and exposure and asbestos-related diseases in the world today, and we offer predictions for the future. Although worldwide consumption of asbestos has decreased, consumption is increasing in many developing countries. The limited data available suggest that exposures may also be high in developing countries. Mesothelioma is still inc…

The impact of global nursing migration on health services delivery.

A number of common issues and challenges face every country; however, their impact varies greatly across different countries. A particular concern in relation to nurse migration is its effect on adding to the imbalance in nursing resources that already exists in different regions and different countries. The number of nurses recruited into developed countries has increased significantly during the past decade, particularly from developing countries. Understanding and addressing the impact of migration requires not only examining what pulls nurses into destination countries but also what pushes…

Added value of three-way methods for the analysis of mortality trends illustrated with worldwide female cancer mortality (1968-1985).

Trends in mortality rates are usually presented per tumour site or per country without an overall analysis of the complete data encompassing all three aspects (tumour sites, countries, trends). This paper presents a methodology for such an overall analysis using three-way methods applied to a data set on female mortality rates for 17 tumour sites of 43 countries for the years 1968-1985. Multivariate techniques like biplots and three-mode principal component analysis within an overall three-way analysis-of-variance framework were used. We confirmed the known patterns of comparatively high morta

Authorship Inequity in Global Health Research Conducted in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and Published in High-Income Country Family Medicine Journals.

PURPOSE: The current structures of global health research and academic authorship have resulted in underrepresentation of authors from low- and middle-income countries. Although authorship inequity has been shown in other specialties, the current status of authorship in family medicine has not been examined. METHODS: We conducted a bibliometric analysis of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) journals based in high-income countries for articles describing research conducted in low-income countries, lower-middle-income countries, and upper-middle-income countries from 2018 to 2023. [Poorer countries have more pro-breastfeeding actions than rich countries: ecological study of 98 countries].

This study aimed to verify the association between gross domestic product values - purchasing power parity (GDP PPP) and scores of the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) tool. This is an ecological study carried out with 98 low-income (n = 43), middle-income (n = 27), and high-income (n = 28) countries. The evaluation of pro-breastfeeding actions was obtained from the WBTi and the GDP PPP from the World Bank. The mean and standard deviation (SD) of the total and each item WBTi scores were estimated. ANOVA and Tukey's test were used to compare the means of the WBTi tool according to t

Incomes to Outcomes: A Global Assessment of Disparities in Cleft and Craniofacial Treatment.

ObjectiveRecent investigations focused on health equity have enumerated widespread disparities in cleft and craniofacial care. This review introduces a structured framework to aggregate findings and direct future research.DesignSystematic review was performed to identify studies assessing health disparities based on race/ethnicity, payor type, income, geography, and education in cleft and craniofacial surgery in high-income countries (HICs) and low/middle-income countries (LMICs). Case reports and systematic reviews were excluded. Meta-analysis was conducted using fixed-effect models for dispa

Availability and affordability of blood pressure-lowering medicines and the effect on blood pressure control in high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: an analysis of the PURE study data.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is considered the most important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, but its control is poor worldwide. We aimed to assess the availability and affordability of blood pressure-lowering medicines, and the association with use of these medicines and blood pressure control in countries at varying levels of economic development. METHODS: We analysed the availability, costs, and affordability of blood pressure-lowering medicines with data recorded from 626 communities in 20 countries participating in the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study. Vaccine strategies: Optimising outcomes.

Successful immunisation programmes generally result from high vaccine effectiveness and adequate uptake of vaccines. In the development of new vaccination strategies, the structure and strength of the local healthcare system is a key consideration. In high income countries, existing infrastructures are usually used, while in less developed countries, the capacity for introducing new vaccines may need to be strengthened, particularly for vaccines administered beyond early childhood, such as the measles or human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Reliable immunisation service funding is another impor

Systematic review of diarrhea duration and severity in children and adults in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally; yet the overall burden of diarrhea in terms of duration and severity has not been quantified. As improvements in treatment lead to decreases in diarrhea mortality, it is important to understand the substantial impact of diarrhea morbidity on disability among children and adults worldwide. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to generate estimates of duration and severity outcomes for individuals 0-59 mos, 5-15 yrs, and ≥ 16 yrs, and for 3 severity indexes: mild, moderate, and severe. RESULTS: We estimate that a

Western diseases: current concepts and implications for pediatric surgery research and practice.

The term "Western diseases" refers to those conditions that are rare or absent in underdeveloped areas of the Third World and increase in frequency with adoptions of Western customs. In adults, they include such common conditions as coronary artery disease, essential hypertension, appendicitis, cholesterol gall stones, and colon cancer. The best examples of Western diseases in the pediatric population are asthma, allergies, appendicitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Limited data from sub-Saharan Africa suggest other pediatric surgical conditions may fall into this category, including hypert

Pragmatic strategies for improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsy in low- and middle-income countries.

Epilepsy poses a major public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where prevention, diagnosis, and treatment must be tailored to local resources, infrastructure, and cultural contexts. Despite their diversity, LMICs commonly experience a pronounced urban-rural disparity in epilepsy care, with rural communities facing limited healthcare infrastructure, a shortage of specialists, and pervasive stigma. Prevention efforts should focus on modifiable risk factors. Neurocysticercosis, a leading preventable cause of epilepsy in endemic regions, can be addressed through improv
