COVID-19 Outbreaks in Correctional Facilities with Work-Release Programs - Idaho, July-November 2020.

As of April 16, 2021, U.S. correctional and detention facilities reported 399,631 cases of COVID-19 in incarcerated persons, resulting in 2,574 deaths (1). During July 14-November 30, 2020, COVID-19 was diagnosed in 382 persons incarcerated in Idaho correctional facilities with work-release programs. Work-release programs (which place incarcerated persons in community businesses) have social and economic benefits, but might put participants at increased risk for bidirectional transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) operates 13 state

An Efficient Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation Protocol for Hexaploid and Tetraploid Wheat.

Wheat, though a key crop plant with considerable influence on world food security, has nonetheless trailed behind other major cereals in the advancement of gene transformation technology for its improvement. New breeding technologies such as genome editing allow precise DNA manipulation, but their potential is limited by low regeneration efficiencies in tissue culture and the lack of transformable genotypes. We developed, in the hexaploid spring wheat cultivar "Fielder," a robust, reproducible Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation system with transformation efficiencies of up to 33…

Social determinants of COVID-19 incidence and outcomes: A rapid review.

Early reports indicate that the social determinants of health are implicated in COVID-19 incidence and outcomes. To inform the ongoing respo … ailable on other key determinants, including occupation, educational attainment, housing status and food security. Assessing associations between sociodemographic factors and COVID-19 was limited by small samples, descriptive study designs, and the timeframe of our search. Systematic reviews of literature published subsequently are required to fully understand …

The child ecosystem and childhood pulmonary tuberculosis: A South African perspective.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates drivers of childhood pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) using a childhood ecosystem approach in South Africa. An ecosystem approach toward identifying risk factors for PTB may identify targeted interventions. METHODS: Data were collected as part of a prospective cohort study of children presenting at a primary care facility or tertiary hospital with possible TB. Characterization of the childhood ecosystem included proximal, medial, and distal determinants. Proximal determinants included child characteristics that could impact PTB outcomes. Medial determinants i

Rodent control to fight plague: field assessment of methods based on rat density reduction.

Rodents represent a serious threat to food security and public health. The extent to which rodent control can mitigate the risk from rodent-borne disease depends on both the effectiveness of control in reducing rodent abundance and the impact on disease epidemiology. Focusing on a plague-endemic region of Madagascar, this study compared the effectiveness of 3 methods: live-traps, snap-traps, and rodenticides. Control interventions were implemented inside houses between May and October 2019. Tracking tiles monitored rodent abundance. Rodent fleas, the vector involved in plague transmission, wer…

Two ABC transporters are differentially involved in the toxicity of two Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1 toxins to the invasive crop-pest Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith).

BACKGROUND: The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is a major agricultural pest that has invaded the East Hemisphere since 2016, generating a serious threat to food security worldwide including Africa and Asia. The Cry toxins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been shown to be effective against this insect pest. In different insect ABC transporters (ABCC2 or ABCC3) have been shown to be involved as receptors of some Cry1 toxins. Here we analyzed the role of SfABCC2 and SfABCC3 in the toxicity of Cry1Fa and Cry1Ab toxins in this insect pest. RESULTS: Two S. frugiperda SfABCC2 and Sf…

Anaerobic fermentation results in loss of viability of Fasciola hepatica metacercariae in grass silage.

The parasitic liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, has a detrimental impact on food security and poses a welfare concern to ruminant livestock. F. hepatica metacercariae, shed from an intermediate mud snail host, encyst on vegetation and present a source of infection to grazing livestock. Feeding grass silage to ruminants is a common practice, however the role it plays in the transmission of F. hepatica remains largely unknown. Our current understanding relies on historical studies that are not representative of current silage production and did not apply molecular methods to detect F. hepatica DNA…

Goethite-modified biochar restricts the mobility and transfer of cadmium in soil-rice system.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of paddy soils has raised serious concerns for food safety and security. Remediation and management of Cd contaminated soil with biochar (BC) and modified biochar is a cost-effective method and has gained due attention in recent years. Goethite-modified biochar (GB) can combine the beneficial effects of BC and iron (Fe) for remediation of Cd contaminated soil. We probed the impact of different BC and GB amendments on Cd mobility and transfer in the soil-rice system. Both BC and GB effectively reduced Cd mobility and availability in the rhizosphere and improved the ke

Ecological risk assessment of agricultural pesticides in the highly productive Ndop flood plain in Cameroon using the PRIMET model.

Flood plains can make a significant contribution to food security due to their rich agricultural and aquaculture potentials but the misuse of pesticides in these ecosystems may seriously threaten their sustainability. We have assessed the risk of commonly used pesticides by rice and vegetable farmers on two major streams in the Ndop flood plain in Cameroon using the PRIMET model. Thirty pesticide formulations were identified containing 17 active ingredients belonging to fungicides (7), herbicides (3), and insecticides (7). Out of these, five posed acute and/or chronic risks to the streams. Chl…

Scrotal tick damage as a cause of infertility in communal bulls in Moretele, South Africa.

Calving rate in communal cattle influences both food security and socio-economics in rural households. A previous study indicated that scrotal damage caused by ticks could affect the fertility of communal bulls and reduce the annual calving rate. The objectives of the study were to investigate the annual calving rate in communal herds by counting calves during herd visits, perform breeding soundness examinations on bulls and identify adult ticks attached to their genitalia. This prospective longitudinal survey was based on participatory rural appraisal. Calving rates were estimated in cows (n …

Efficient production of antifungal proteins in plants using a new transient expression vector derived from tobacco mosaic virus.

Fungi that infect plants, animals or humans pose a serious threat to human health and food security. Antifungal proteins (AFPs) secreted by filamentous fungi are promising biomolecules that could be used to develop new antifungal therapies in medicine and agriculture. They are small highly stable proteins with specific potent activity against fungal pathogens. However, their exploitation requires efficient, sustainable and safe production systems. Here, we report the development of an easy-to-use, open access viral vector based on Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). This new system allows the fast and…

Plant-made E2 glycoprotein single-dose vaccine protects pigs against classical swine fever.

Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV) causes classical swine fever, a highly contagious hemorrhagic fever affecting both feral and domesticated pigs. Outbreaks of CSF in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America had significant adverse impacts on animal health, food security and the pig industry. The disease is generally contained by prevention of exposure through import restrictions (e.g. banning import of live pigs and pork products), localized vaccination programmes and culling of infected or at-risk animals, often at very high cost. Current CSFV-modified live virus vaccines are protective, but d…

The evolutionary origins of pesticide resistance.

Durable crop protection is an essential component of current and future food security. However, the effectiveness of pesticides is threatened by the evolution of resistant pathogens, weeds and insect pests. Pesticides are mostly novel synthetic compounds, and yet target species are often able to evolve resistance soon after a new compound is introduced. Therefore, pesticide resistance provides an interesting case of rapid evolution under strong selective pressures, which can be used to address fundamental questions concerning the evolutionary origins of adaptations to novel conditions. We ask:…

Production diseases in smallholder pig systems in rural Lao PDR.

Pigs in Lao People's Democratic Republic are important for income and food security, particularly in rural households. The majority of pigs are reared in smallholder systems, which may challenge the implementation of any disease control strategies. To investigate risk factors for pig production diseases in such farming systems in the country a serological survey was conducted during 2011. A total of 647 pigs were sampled, accounting for 294 households in Luang Prabang and 353 in Savannakhet province representing upland and lowland, respectively. The results demonstrated that pigs in Lao PDR ha…

Land surface phenology of Northeast China during 2000-2015: temporal changes and relationships with climate changes.

As an important crop growing area, Northeast China (NEC) plays a vital role in China's food security, which has been severely affected by climate change in recent years. Vegetation phenology in this region is sensitive to climate change, and currently, the relationship between the phenology of NEC and climate change remains unclear. In this study, we used a satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to obtain the temporal patterns of the land surface phenology in NEC from 2000 to 2015 and validated the results using ground phenology observations. We then explored the relat…

Application of the thermofluor PaSTRy technique for improving foot-and-mouth disease virus vaccine formulation.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has a major economic impact throughout the world and is a considerable threat to food security. Current FMD virus (FMDV) vaccines are made from chemically inactivated virus and need to contain intact viral capsids to maximize efficacy. FMDV exists as seven serotypes, each made up by a number of constantly evolving subtypes. A lack of immunological cross-reactivity between serotypes and between some strains within a serotype greatly complicates efforts to control FMD by vaccination. Thus, vaccines for one serotype do not afford protection against the others, and mul…

African swine fever: how can global spread be prevented?

African swine fever (ASF) is a devastating haemorrhagic fever of pigs with mortality rates approaching 100 per cent. It causes major economic losses, threatens food security and limits pig production in affected countries. ASF is caused by a large DNA virus, African swine fever virus (ASFV). There is no vaccine against ASFV and this limits the options for disease control. ASF has been confined mainly to sub-Saharan Africa, where it is maintained in a sylvatic cycle and/or among domestic pigs. Wildlife hosts include wild suids and arthropod vectors. The relatively small numbers of incursions to…

Older people's lives in the inner city: hazardous or rewarding?

An exploratory, qualitative study was used to investigate the social health needs of older residents of a low-income inner-Sydney area characterised by multiple social and environmental hazards. The research was conducted to inform the development by the South Eastern Sydney Area Health Promotion Unit of a strategy to promote the health, wellbeing and independence of older people. As part of a needs assessment process, the investigation focused on specific subgroups of the population believed to be highly disadvantaged and neglected. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 residents aged 60
