An outbreak of Paederus dermatitis in a primary school, Terengganu, Malaysia.

Outbreaks of Paederus dermatitis have been reported in several Asia-Pacific countries when rove beetles (genus Paederus) are accidentally brushed or crushed on the skin, releasing haemolymph pederin. An investigation was conducted in a school to ascertain the causative agent, establish the case definition, epidemiological characterisation of cases, entomological and environmental survey and data analysis. This outbreak occurred among 36 schoolchildren attending a night tuition class conducted by their teacher. Dermatitis developed within 24 hours in 33/37 (89.2%) cases with itchiness as the fi

Decompensation of cardiac hypertrophy: cellular mechanisms and novel therapeutic targets.

Orientation, the spatial organization of animal behavior, is an essential faculty of animals. Bacteria and lower animals such as insects exhibit taxis, innate orientation behavior, directly toward or away from a directional cue. Organisms can also orient themselves at a specific angle relative to the cues. In this study, using Drosophila as a model system, we established a visual orientation conditioning paradigm based on a flight simulator in which a stationary flying fly could control the rotation of a visual object. By coupling aversive heat shocks to a fly's orientation toward one side of

Identification of rice cultivars resistant to Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and their use in an integrated management program.

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most destructive insect pest of rice in the United States and is a particularly severe pest in Louisiana. The current management program for this insect in Louisiana relies heavily on insecticides, most notably the seed treatment fipronil (Icon). Diversification of the management program by incorporation of alternative strategies is needed to improve the effectiveness and long-term stability of the program. In the three experiments reported here, three components of a diversified management program for the rice water weevil in Lo

[The basophil degranulation test in the diagnosis of Hymenoptera sting allergy].

In 98 patients with a suspected immediate type allergy to hymenoptera stings, skin tests (ST) with venom extracts, RAST determinations of venom specific serum IgE antibodies and basophil degranulation tests (BDT) with unwashed leukocytes were performed. BDT is a technically simple in-vitro method for detecting cell fixed IgE without risk for the patient. The specificity of BDT was investigated in a group of 10 controls not allergic to insect stings, of whom 7 were atopics. A good correlation could be demonstrated between BDT and the histamine release test (HRT), which was performed in the Inst

A serine-rich salivary protein facilitates brown planthopper feeding and survival by mediating salivary sheath formation.

The piercing-sucking pest, brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens, BPH), poses a severe and persistent threat to rice in China and across Asia. During feeding, BPHs secrete salivary proteins to form salivary sheaths, which are crucial for successful and sustained phloem sap ingestion. These salivary sheath proteins are crucial for rice-BPH interactions and hold promise as targets for pest control strategies like RNAi. However, the specific functions of salivary proteins in sheath formation remain largely unclear. In this study, we identify NlSRP, a serine-rich salivary protein in BPH, as a nove

Redcliffe Salaman's Scheme for Raising Virus-Free Potato Stocks: professionalization, institutionalization and regulation in interwar Britain's plant virus research.

This article examines Redcliffe N. Salaman's (1874-1955) efforts to establish a national system for producing virus-free seed potatoes in 1930s Britain. It explores how scientific authority was mobilized to reshape agricultural practices and assert regulatory control over seed production. Although Salaman's proposals were never fully realized, they laid the groundwork for enduring strategies to improve potato crop health by protecting seed from infectious agents and their insect vectors. Salaman's work drew on both traditional horticultural knowledge and emerging microbiological techniques, sp

N-Acetylcysteine Attacks Phenoloxidase to Inhibit Insect Melanization and Boost Fungal Virulence.

The prophenoloxidase (PPO) melanization cascade is a cornerstone of insect humoral immunity against fungal pathogens, yet its direct fungicidal mechanism remains undefined, and strategies to safely manipulate this pathway for biological control are lacking. Here, we demonstrate that infection of Drosophila by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana elicits a surge in phenoloxidase (PO) activity directly triggered by the fungal cell wall component β-1,3-Glucan. This activated PO generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are essential for restricting fungal proliferation, thereby estab

Assessment of Aphidicidal Effect of Entomopathogenic Fungi against Parthenogenetic Insect, Mustard Aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.).

The mustard aphid (L. erysimi) is a pest that infests various cruciferous crops and transmits plant viruses. To achieve eco-friendly pest management, entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are potential microbial control agents for controlling this pest. Therefore, virulence screening of EPF isolates under Petri dish conditions is necessary before field application. However, the mustard aphid is a parthenogenetic insect, making it difficult to record data during Petri dish experiments. A modified system for detached-leaf bioassays was developed to address this issue, using a micro-sprayer to inoculate c

Significance of a neglected tropical disease: lessons from a paradigmatic case of 'success in translation'.

In a previous publication, I stressed the fundamental importance of research for improving health using as an example the control of Chagas disease in the Americas.(1) For that purpose, I analysed the major scientific breakthroughs and public health events from the 1909 discovery of Chagas disease and its causative pathogen, Trypanosoma cruzi, by Carlos Chagas,(2) through the successful control of its transmission by insect vectors in large regions of the Southern Cone countries in the 90s.(3) In the twenty years since that publication, Brazil and Latin American countries had to cope with a nu

Insecticides, biologics and nematicides: Updates to IRAC's mode of action classification - a tool for resistance management.

Insecticide resistance has been and continues to be a significant problem for invertebrate pest control. As such, effective insecticide resistance management (IRM) is critical to maintain the efficacy of current and future insecticides. A technical group within CropLife International, the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) was established 35 years ago (1984) as an international association of crop protection companies that today spans the globe. IRAC's focus is on preserving the long-term utility of insect, mite, and most recently nematode control products through effective resista

Evaluation of larvicidal activity and effects on post embrionary development of laboratory reared Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), treated with Brevibacillus laterosporus.

The blowfly Lucilia cuprina is an economically important livestock pest that is also associated with human myiasis. To date, methods including the application of chemical pesticides, plant extracts, insect growth regulators and a range of Bacillus thuringiensis strains have been used, with varying degrees of success, to control this pest. The present study evaluated the larvicidal activity and the induction of sub lethal effects upon post embrionary development following ingestion of 12 strains of Brevibacillus laterosporus, presented individually in the diet as spores. All strains were shown

The enzyme 3-hydroxykynurenine transaminase as potential target for 1,2,4-oxadiazoles with larvicide activity against the dengue vector Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the vector agent responsible for the transmission of yellow fever and dengue fever viruses to over 80 million people in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Exhaustive efforts have lead to a vaccine candidate with only 30% effectiveness against the dengue virus and failure to protect patients against the serotype 2. Hence, vector control remains the most viable route to dengue fever control programs. We have synthesized a class of 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives whose most biologically active compounds exhibit potent activity against Aedes aegypti larvae (c

Farmer perceptions and willingness to pay for novel livestock pest control technologies: A case of tsetse repellent collar in Kwale County in Kenya.

Tsetse-transmitted Animal African Trypanosomosis (AAT) is one of the most important constraints to livestock development in Africa. Use of trypanocides has been the most widespread approach for the management of AAT, despite the associated drug resistance and health concerns associated with drug metabolites in animal products. Alternative control measures that target tsetse fly vectors of AAT, though effective, have been hard to sustain in part because these are public goods applied area-wide. The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) and partners have developed and imp

Resistance to commonly used insecticides and underlying mechanisms of resistance in Aedes aegypti (L.) from Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Drastic increases of dengue fever (DF) over the past few years have prompted studies on the development of resistance to insecticides in the mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus). In Sri Lanka control of the vector population is essentially achieved using larvicides (temephos) and adulticides (principally pyrethroids). The present study investigates resistance to commonly used insecticides and underlying mechanisms of Ae. aegypti in selected sites in Sri Lanka. METHODS: In this study, susceptibility to three commonly used adulticides (malathion, permethrin and deltamethrin) an

Genetic Differentiation of Glossina pallidipes Tsetse Flies in Southern Kenya.

The tsetse fly Glossina pallidipes, the major vector of the parasite that causes animal African trypanosomiasis in Kenya, has been subject to intense control measures with only limited success. The G. pallidipes population dynamics and dispersal patterns that underlie limited success in vector control campaigns remain unresolved, and knowledge on genetic connectivity can provide insights, and thereby improve control and monitoring efforts. We therefore investigated the population structure and estimated migration and demographic parameters in G. pallidipes using genotypic data from 11 microsat

Modelling the risk of being bitten by malaria vectors in a vector control area in southern Benin, west Africa.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of malaria vector populations, expressing various resistance and/or behavioural patterns could explain the reduced effectiveness of vector control interventions reported in some African countries. A better understanding of the ecology and distribution of malaria vectors is essential to design more effective and sustainable strategies for malaria control and elimination. Here, we analyzed the spatio-temporal risk of the contact between humans and the sympatric An. funestus and both M and S molecular forms of An. gambiae s.s. in an area of Benin with high coverage of ve

Tsetse fly control and trypanosomiasis in Africa, quo vadis?

National and international efforts to eradicate tsetse fly-borne human and animal trypanosomiasis are critically evaluated, and possible reasons for their failure in many cases are discussed. Some formerly performed campaigns in specific areas with positive results cannot be taken as examples to solve the main problems. In future, a significant reduction of trypanosomiasis cases will be possible to achieve only if a concerted long-term Pan-African approach, based on financial security, the continuity of expert staff, and a well-planned, ecologically sound land use, is generally accepted.

A comparative longitudinal study of bovine trypanosomiasis in tsetse-free and tsetse-infested zones of the Amhara Region, northwest Ethiopia.

A study was conducted to determine the incidence of trypanosome infections in cattle in tsetse-free and tsetse-infested zones of the Amhara Region of northwest Ethiopia. A total of six sentinel herds were established and the cattle observed during a period of 8 consecutive months. The prevalence of seropositive cattle was high in both the tsetse-free and tsetse-infested zones. The average monthly incidence of trypanosome infection, determined using molecular diagnostic tools, was 20.9% and 25.7% in the tsetse-free and the tsetse-infested zones, respectively. In the tsetse-free, Trypanosoma viv
