How to become comfortable talking about sex to your patients.

Dealing with patients' sex-related complaints is uncomfortable for many physicians. It can become more comfortable if the physician learns to apply his or her clinical knowledge of sexuality in combination with specific interpersonal interviewing skills. The level of comfort can be increased if the physician accepts his or her professional limitations in providing therapy and knows what other sources of care are available.

Dyadic associations between sleep quality, diet-related self-regulation, and diet quality in couples.

BACKGROUND: Although poor sleep is known to impair diet quality and self-regulation, research has primarily examined these effects within individuals. For cohabiting couples, one partner's poor sleep may affect both partners' diet quality. PURPOSE: This study examined whether sleep quality is associated with both one's own and one's partner's diet quality, and whether impaired self-regulation processes linked partners' poor sleep and poor diet quality. METHODS: We conducted a 3-month dyadic longitudinal study with 204 cohabiting couples (N = 408; M age = 42.4 years). Participants completed a

Peer stress and adolescent deviant behaviors: Unraveling the roles of loneliness and stress mindset.

Peer stress during adolescence is a salient interpersonal challenge and has been linked to increased engagement in deviant behaviors. However, the socioemotional mechanisms underlying this association, as well as factors that may buffer adolescents against its negative effects, remain underexplored. The current study investigated the longitudinal association between peer stress and deviant behaviors among Chinese adolescents, focusing on loneliness as a mediating mechanism and stress mindset as a moderator of the association between peer stress and deviant behaviors, as well as between peer st

Three- to 8-year old children do not favor male power when allocating resources.

From an early age, children perceive power imbalances between genders, but their attitudes toward gendered power remain largely unexplored. We studied this issue using a resource allocation task with 653 French children aged 3-8 (50.15% girls) recruited between 2022 and 2023. Participants were exposed to a dyadic power interaction and had to distribute more resources to either the dominant or the subordinate character. We tested three hypotheses: H1 predicted a male dominance bias; H2 predicted own-gender favoritism; and H3 predicted sensitivity to hierarchical status only. Contrary to H1, no

Interactional Patterns of Adolescent Health Education: A Roter Interaction Analysis System-Based Study in Moroccan Secondary Schools.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which health-related behaviors consolidate. In Moroccan secondary schools, health education remains largely educator-guided, with limited evidence of classroom communication. This study analyzes how verbal interaction patterns structure health education delivery at middle and high school levels. METHODS: An exploratory mixed-methods study was conducted in five Moroccan secondary institutions (N = 169 students). Verbal interactions (1024 utterances) were coded using the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS), adapted to the Mo

Navigating type 1 diabetes as a young couple: A qualitative analysis.

ObjectivesType 1 diabetes (T1D) is a complex and chronic disease that often requires management within an interpersonal context. Young couples may face unique challenges as they integrate and negotiate diabetes routines into their lives. The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of young adult couples as they adjust and adapt to the management of T1D in their relationship.MethodsYoung adults (25-40 years) living with T1D and their romantic partners (77 couples, 154 individuals) were separately interviewed. A constant comparison approach was used to qualitatively analyze the data

Theoretical Foundations and Preliminary Evidence for an Integrative Psychological Model of Sexual Consent Communication.

Existing models of sexual consent communication tend to focus on interpersonal and social contexts. By comparison, the role of individual factors is relatively understudied. In this paper, we advance a new psychological model of sexual consent, the Integrative Cognitive-Affective Model of Sexual Consent Communication, which posits that attachment representations, serving as models for how intimacy is experienced and enacted in adult romantic relationships, are intricately linked to consent communication. Further, the model proposes that attachment insecurity is a risk factor for poor consent c

Short-term dynamic changes in interbrain synchrony during first social interaction between strangers.

Emerging evidence highlights the role of interbrain synchrony in fostering the formation of relationships. Yet a key question remains: how does interbrain synchrony dynamically evolve throughout a first meeting between strangers, and to what extent do interbrain networks exhibit dynamic changes during the interaction? In this study, we investigate short-term changes in behavioral and interbrain synchrony during initial face-to-face encounters between strangers. To assess experience-dependent changes in interbrain synchrony, we tracked these dynamics with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (

A Meta-Analysis of Friends with Benefits Relationships: Examining Sexual Features, Sexual and Mental Health, Violence/Aggression, and Gender.

For over two decades, scholars have studied friends with benefits relationships (FWBRs), or the distinct casual sexual relationship that incorporates sexual activity within an already existing friendship without expectations for commitment. The plethora of research spans multiple disciplines and has been measured in various ways. As a result, many mixed results within this body of work exist. This study presents an omnibus meta-analysis based on an extensive and systematic literature search. We analyzed studies (k = 38) that focused on five conceptual clusters: sexual features, sexual health r

Outgroup friendships and social influence in the development of adolescent attitudes toward secondary outgroups.

Having outgroup friends not only improves attitudes toward the (primary) outgroup but potentially also toward other (secondary) outgroups. This "secondary transfer effect" is attributed to the generalization of intergroup contact, but it may also reflect social influence as friends shape each other's outgroup attitudes. In three studies (two empirical and one simulation), we applied stochastic actor-oriented models to longitudinal network data representing friendships between adolescents. Across Studies 1 (n = 812) and 2 (n = 2,559), we found no evidence that having more primary outgroup frien

In tune with AI: Singing as a social surrogate to ease loneliness and foster social connection.

As social isolation becomes increasingly prevalent in the digital era, this research investigates the potential of AI-facilitated co-experiences to alleviate loneliness through two experiments with healthy Chinese adults. In Experiment 1 (N = 180), we examined beliefs about three imagined activities (co-singing, co-running, and co-diagnosing) with human versus AI partners by assessing anticipated loneliness change, social presence, companionship, and empathy. Results supported the hypothesis of positive AI-mediated co-experience, albeit weaker than human, with co-singing/co-running anticipated

Cognitive Emotion Regulation as a Mediator of Trait Anxiety and Relational Aggression in Romantic Relationships of Heteronormative Individuals and Members of the LGBTQI Community.

This study aims to examine the link of trait anxiety on relational aggression, with the presence of cognitive emotion regulation as a moderator. We measure the anxiety as a trait as a predictor for displaying aggressive behaviours. Moreover, the influence of individual maladaptive strategies was assessed using the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire on the level of relational aggression. The study involved 169 participants; in terms of sexual orientation, the respondents were divided nearly equally: heterosexual (n = 85), and LGBTQI group (n = 84). The data were collected through online

Testing sex differences in the relationship context needs the inclusion of gay and lesbian couples.

The target article suggests that romantic relationships matter more to men than women. I discuss the work of West, Popp, and Kenny (2008), suggesting that properly testing for hypothesized sex differences requires gay and lesbian couples to serve as reference groups. A modified actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) can then test if relationships matter more to men in relationships (i.e., straight and gay) or matter more to people in relationships with women (i.e., straight men or lesbians).

Phubbing in pregnancy as a predictor of postpartum depressive symptoms: preliminary results.

Partner behavior toward pregnant women plays a significant role in maternal mental health. One of the common behaviors that negatively affects the quality of communication is phubbing. Phubbing is defined as ignoring a partner during face to face interaction in favor of a mobile phone. The present study examined the association between partner phubbing during pregnancy and postpartum depression. Thirty expectant couples were recruited from a gynecological outpatient clinic in Italy and assessed longitudinally during the first trimester, third trimester, and within three months postpartum. Who benefits most from couple relationship education: A machine learning approach.

OBJECTIVE: Couple relationship education (CRE) seeks to enhance relationship functioning and prevent deterioration of relationship quality over time. However, impacts of CRE are mixed and often appear to be influenced by the characteristics of the couples receiving the intervention. To provide effective interventions, a better understanding of the couples who are most likely to benefit from CRE is needed. Unfortunately, the existing literature has failed to account for the complex and interdependent nature of pretreatment risk factors, leading to inconsistent and inconclusive results. METHOD:

Emotion Regulation and Relationship Satisfaction in Couple Therapy: What Happens Across Sessions?

While previous studies have demonstrated significant associations between partners' emotion regulation (ER) and overall well-being, very few studies provide knowledge on ER in clinical couples, especially across couple therapy sessions. The sample consisted of 174 mixed-sex couples, predominantly white and from the western region of the United States, who attended at least the initial eight sessions of couple therapy. The current study examined the intra- and inter-personal effects of ER difficulties (i.e., lack of awareness, nonacceptance, limited strategies, and impulsivity) on the trajector

Differential effect of internal and external entrapment on athlete's well-being: The multilevel moderating role of grateful climate.

Prior research suggests that being entrapped in helplessness and an inability to escape aversive circumstances may undermine individuals' well-being. In the present study, however, drawing on gratitude-based perspectives, we propose that a team-level grateful climate may buffer the detrimental effects of entrapment on athletes' well-being. A three-year, six-wave longitudinal design was employed with 283 Taiwanese student-athletes (165 males, 118 females; M age = 16.72 years, SD = .47) nested within 62 sports teams. Multilevel modeling showed that external entrapment negatively predicted change

Cardiac dynamics during social evaluative feedback: Evidence from intersubject representational similarity analysis.

In everyday interactions, social evaluative feedback can elicit defensive responses that vary across individuals, underscoring the need to clarify the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this variability. This study examined the cardiac correlates of defensive responses to social feedback, focusing on how cardiac activity reflects individual differences in self-protective behavior. Participants completed a mobile-based reciprocal artwork evaluation task while cardiac activity was continuously monitored via photoplethysmography using a wearable smartwatch. During the task, participants re

Daily stressor control buffers stressor-related negative and positive affect associations.

Appraisals of daily stressors (e.g., daily stressor control) have been theorized to be associated with better short-term and long-term health and well-being. Although daily stressor control has been identified as a resource for buffering same-day and next-day affective responses to daily stressors, little work has explored associations across type of daily stressor. As such, the current study aimed to understand the potential protective utility of perceived stressor control for daily stressor-affect associations. Using the National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDEIII; n = 1,263, Mage = 62.62,
