Turning failure into success: how artificial intelligence can help personalize therapies and re-use patient data.

Despite robust preclinical evidence, many clinical trials, including several that targeted the purinergic system, fail to demonstrate efficacy in humans. Failure may stem from inability to accurately identify patient subgroups responding similarly to treatments. Here, we explore the potential of artificial intelligence to revolutionize how we group and classify patients in clinical studies. We introduce a new framework using Large Language Models-generated embeddings of detailed patient data, to create a semantic-aware latent space, enabling us to identify truly meaningful patients' clusters. …

COMT rs4680 and DAOA rs947267 Polymorphism Interact to Influence Cognition and Psychiatric Symptoms in Chronic Schizophrenia.

Dopaminergic and glutamatergic dysfunction, involving genes such as COMT and DAOA, is implicated in schizophrenia. However, large-scale studies examining their interactions on cognitive and symptomatic outcomes remain scarce. COMT rs4680 and DAOA rs947267 polymorphisms were measured in chronic schizophrenics (n = 758) and controls (n = 416), and cognition and psychiatric symptoms were assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Both the dominant (OR = 0.582, p = 0.024) and heterozygous (OR =

Activation Patterns throughout the Word Processing Network of L1-dominant Bilinguals Reflect Language Similarity and Language Decisions.

A crucial aspect of bilingual communication is the ability to identify the language of an input. Yet, the neural and cognitive basis of this ability is largely unknown. Moreover, it cannot be easily incorporated into neuronal models of bilingualism, which posit that bilinguals rely on the same neural substrates for both languages and concurrently activate them even in monolingual settings. Here we hypothesized that bilinguals can employ language-specific sublexical (bigram frequency) and lexical (orthographic neighborhood size) statistics for language recognition. Moreover, we investigated the

LLMs for industrial databases: an agro-food production plant use case.

INTRODUCTION: Extracting value from industrial time-series databases such as InfluxDB 2.0 requires expertise in specialized query languages (InfluxQL, Flux) that domain experts typically lack, and no labeled corpora exist for translating natural language into them. METHODS: We present a modular system that translates questions written in Spanish into executable InfluxQL and Flux queries over an InfluxDB 2.0 instance deployed in a real agro-food production plant operating under a self-consumption energy scheme. It comprises a semantic layer implemented as a knowledge graph encoding the InfluxD

Visual processing is a language-agnostic window into heterogeneity in early reading development.

Reading disabilities impose profound impacts on educational and socioeconomic outcomes worldwide, yet identifying reliable early predictors remains a significant challenge. For five decades, the role of visual processing in reading development has been contested-largely due to small, homogeneous samples and a lack of research designed to capture heterogeneity in reading development. In this study, we administered theory-driven, carefully validated measures of visual processing-including multi-element processing of letters and pseudo-letters and global motion coherence-to a large, socioeconomic

CellOntologyMapper: Consensus mapping of cell type annotation.

CellOntologyMapper automates the standardization of cell type annotations in single-cell RNA-seq by mapping user-defined names to the Cell Ontology (CL) and Cell Taxonomy (CT). The framework constructs a comprehensive embedding database of 19,381 curated cell types using sentence transformers, large language models, and synonym expansion. User inputs, such as abbreviations (e.g., "dNK"), are processed through embedding similarity ranking and LLM amplification to resolve ambiguous or context-dependent labels. The system outputs standardized ontology terms with high accuracy (0.835 for CL, 0.911…

Blepharoplasty in the Artificial Intelligence Era.

Blepharoplasty and related periorbital procedures sit at the interface of functional reconstruction, esthetic surgery, ophthalmology, facial plastic surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Because eyelid and periorbital changes can be captured in photographs, videos, and 3-dimensional imaging, artificial intelligence has growing relevance for objective measurement, screening, planning, outcome assessment, and patient education. Current evidence is promising but heterogeneous. Image-based computer vision and deep learning appear closest to clinical use, whereas large language and generativ

Interpretation, Interpretive Process, and Artificial Intelligence.

This paper addresses the growing body of evidence that large language models (LLM's) are increasingly capable of emulating and in some ways surpassing humans in their capacity for empathic responsiveness. While this development raises concern (and for some, hope) about the potential for AI therapeutic bots, it is the author's contention that the truly therapeutic aspects of psychoanalytic interaction are only possible with another human. This point is demonstrated through discussion of a brief clinical vignette. The paper concludes with a discussion of factors that appear to be driving the eff…
