Closed chest catheter ablation of the atrioventricular (AV) junction has been performed with direct current or laser energy. The effect of 750 kHz radiofrequency energy on ablation of the AV junction was evaluated in 13 dogs. The radiofrequency energy was generated from an electrosurgical generator in the bipolar mode. The radiofrequency output was delivered between two distal electrodes (bipolar ablation) in eight dogs, and between the distal electrode and an external patch electrode (unipolar ablation) in another five dogs at varying power (watts) but with a constant pulse duration of 10 sec

Persistent avascular retina (PAR) in prematurely born individuals may be a risk factor for late sequelae of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), including retinal detachment in older childhood and adulthood. Although PAR has been associated with use of vascular endothelial growth factor antagonist therapy for treatment-requiring ROP, the prevalence of this finding in patients without prior ROP treatment is unknown. We performed a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of PAR in a cohort of patients 4-8 years of age who were screened for ROP in the neonatal intensive care unit and did n

BACKGROUND: Peripheral Retinal neovascularization is well-described as a complication of X-linked retinoschisis, but less often observed in myopic and primary retinoschisis. We present a case of a myopic female who developed retinal microvascular abnormalities due to retinoschisis and subsequent vitreous hemorrhage which would cause severe visual damage without timely and proper treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old highly myopic Chinese female complained of blurred vision in her right eye. Her best corrected visual acuitiy was 20/20 OU, and her refraction was - 9.00S OU. Dilated fundus

RATIONALE: Earlier studies have shown that laser photocoagulation treatments are associated with good long-term visual acuity in most patients with severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (S-NPDR). Histopathologic studies of autopsied eyes have demonstrated defects in the choriocapillaris beneath the retinal laser lesions secondary to photocoagulation for S-NPDR. These lesions have been observed to expand centrifugally over time especially in the posterior pole, and the atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) can be significantly enlarged. There are, however, limited studies detai

The aim of this study is to report the coexistence of retinal arterial macroaneurysms (RAMs) and cerebral aneurysms (CAs) in a 58-year-old woman with hypertension. She was noted as having a 1-week history of vision loss in her left eye, along with a 2-month history of a nonspecific headache. Visual acuity was 20/32 in her left eye and 20/20 in her right eye. A fundus examination revealed multiple areas of retinal hemorrhages that were surrounded by circinate exudation in her left eye, as well as the generalized attenuation of the retinal arteries in both of her eyes. Angiographically, hyperflu

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DRP) is a common microvascular complication seen in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The effects of T1DM and concomitant (proliferative) DRP on retinal blood flow are currently unclear. Therefore, we measured retinal vascular blood flow in T1DM patients with and without DRP and non-diabetic controls. We further assessed the acute effects of panretinal photocoagulation on retinal microvascular bloodflow in eight patients with diabetes.
METHODS: Thirty-three T1DM patients with proliferative DRP, previously treated with panretinal photocoagulation

Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) is a rare condition in monochorionic twin pregnancies. Small intertwin placental vascular communications allow transfusion, which results in a hemoglobin difference in the twins in the absence of oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios. We report here a case of TAPS diagnosed at 17 weeks' gestation in an obese patient (BMI 42) with a whole anterior placenta. The only possible treatment at this stage of pregnancy was intra-uterine transfusion (IUT), which was repeated weekly until photocoagulation of placental anastomoses was feasible. Fetoscopic laser surgery

PURPOSE: A recent threefold increase in laser treatment for advanced retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) triggered a nationwide preschool ophthalmic and developmental status among extremely preterm survivors. Here, we discuss refraction and visual acuity.
METHODS: Survivors (n = 178) from a national birth cohort (February 2004 to March 2006) of gestational age <28 weeks (PT) and 56 full-term (FT) controls attended for evaluation at age 4 years. Cycloplegic refraction and keratometry were achieved by Retinomax autokeratorefractor and visual acuities by symbol recognition (HOTV, logMAR).
RESULTS:
