Late onset of haze associated with viral keratoconjunctivitis following photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: To report a newly recognized cause of late onset of corneal haze following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: A 35-year old woman who underwent uneventful PRK and subsequently developed viral keratoconjunctivitis 1 year after treatment. RESULTS: During resolution of the viral keratoconjunctivitis, the patient developed extensive central corneal subepithelial infiltrates and anterior stromal fibrosis in the PRK ablation zone. More than 1 year after the initial infection, the central subepithelial fibrosis persisted, complicated by myopic regression, central steep island o

Surgery of the cornea.

Corneal surgery is a common and essential part of veterinary ophthalmology and ranges from simple linear keratotomy for indolent ulcers to penetrating keratoplasty for restoration of optical clarity. Success in corneal surgery relies on an understanding of corneal anatomy, physiology and wound healing, meticulous attention to detail, microsurgical equipment and techniques, and use of appropriate preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative medications. Surgical management of corneal disease is indicated for corneal ulceration, excision of a mass lesion, reconstructive procedures, therapeuti

Case Report: Abrocitinib treatment for refractory palmoplantar pustulosis.

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory dermatosis characterized by recurrent sterile pustules on the palms and soles and often shows inadequate or unsustained responses to conventional systemic therapies and biologics. We report a 58-year-old woman with a 3-year history of refractory PPP. Before referral, oral prednisone and acitretin provided only transient disease control, with rapid relapse during dose tapering. Apremilast combined with topical halometasone cream and 308-nm excimer laser therapy failed to adequately control the plantar lesions. After referral, the

Coronary Calcified Nodules: From Pathological Definitions to Intravascular Imaging- and Morphology-Guided PCI.

Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a hallmark of advanced atherosclerosis and a major determinant of procedural complexity during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Once considered a passive consequence of vascular degeneration, CAC is now recognized as an active, highly regulated process driven by inflammation, oxidative stress, extracellular vesicle release, osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and biomechanical remodeling. These mechanisms generate a spectrum of calcific phenotypes, ranging from microcalcifications and sheet calcium to nodular calcium and c

The Cornea: No Difference in the Wound Healing Response to Injury Related to Whether, or Not, There's a Bowman's Layer.

Bowman's layer is an acellular layer in the anterior stroma found in the corneas of humans, most other primates, chickens, and some other species. Many other species, however, including the rabbit, dog, wolf, cat, tiger, and lion, do not have a Bowman's layer. Millions of humans who have had photorefractive keratectomy over the past thirty plus years have had Bowman's layer removed by excimer laser ablation over their central cornea without apparent sequelae. A prior study showed that Bowman's layer does not contribute significantly to mechanical stability within the cornea. Bowman's layer doe

The safety and efficacy of different endovascular treatments for in-stent restenosis of the femoropopliteal artery: A network meta-analysis.

Introduction: Femoropopliteal artery in-stent restenosis (ISR) remains a challenging treatment. We performed a network meta-analysis (NWM) for femoropopliteal artery ISR to explore the safety and efficacy of endovascular therapeutic strategies. Methods: The MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were used as data sources. The network meta-analysis (NWM) approach used random-effects models based on the frequentist framework. We compared technical success rate, primary patency, target lesion revascularization (TLR), and major amputation at the 12-month follow-up for femoropoplit
