INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this retrospective study were to investigate the apical root resorption of maxillary incisors in orthodontic patients with en-masse maxillary anterior retraction and intrusion with miniscrews and the factors disposing a patient to apical root resorption.
METHODS: Fifty adult patients with maxillary protrusion were included; 30 were treated with miniscrews and extraction of the maxillary first premolars (group I), and 20 were treated with extraction of the maxillary first premolars (group II). For each patient, periapical films of the maxillary incisors and latera

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the "effective" temporomandibular joint (TMJ) changes (the sum of condylar modeling, glenoid fossa modeling, and condylar position changes within the fossa), and their influence on chin position in patients with a Class II division 1 malocclusion treated orthodontically with a multibracket appliance and Class II elastics (Tip-Edge) and orthopedically with a fixed functional appliance (Herbst).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups of successfully treated subjects were evaluated: Tip-Edge (n = 24) and Herbst (n = 40). The Bolton Standards served as a control group. Lateral h

Distraction osteogenesis is a bone creating procedure that can contribute materially to the treatment of Class II dento-skeletal disorders where the mandible is under-sized. Still, the serious commitments this treatment demands and the unpredictability of its occlusal results oblige practitioners to pinpoint precisely the indications for its use. We now believe that distraction osteogenesis can beneficially be employed for: 1--Adults with Class II malocclusions, a small mandible, and a lack of harmony between tooth and jaw size. This bone growing technique makes it possible to treat these pati

The purpose of this study was to determine if a general consensus exists among orthodontists regarding the features of an adequate presurgical setup. A questionnaire was developed to assess the importance of 12 criteria for surgical readiness. Each criterion was rated on a 5-point scale (1 = Unimportant, 5 = Critical). This questionnaire was sent to 104 randomly selected, board-certified orthodontists in the United States and Puerto Rico. Usable questionnaires were returned by 57 respondents (55% response rate). The highest and most consistent ratings were given for Arch Compatibility in the t

The orthodontic management of patients with profound learning disability is described including a report of two cases. Close co-operation between the orthodontist and other providers of dental treatment is essential for the management of this group of patients, and a general anaesthetic may be needed to allow fixed appliances to be placed. The orthodontic treatment is co-ordinated with any necessary restorative or periodontal treatment. The moral and ethical questions raised by the treatment offered to this group of patients are discussed.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of condylar destruction on the craniofacial growth of children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and to compare their craniofacial structure with that of healthy children with ideal or postnormal occlusion. Thirty-five children (7 to 16 years) affected by JCA were compared with 136 children (7 to 16 years) with normal facial structure and occlusion (ideal group) and 62 children (7 to 12 years) with postnormal occlusion (postnormal group). Panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms were taken to detect condylar lesions and analy

To evaluate the extent to which surgeons and orthodontists agree on the nature and severity of dentofacial problems requiring orthognathic surgery, three clinicians active in a specialized clinic for treatment of dentofacial deformities scored the pretreatment records of 37 adult class II patients. Each clinician first indicated whether a skeletal/dental problem existed in the maxilla and mandible and then rated the severity of the problem on a visual analog scale. The level of agreement among the three clinicians was highest for dental problems and lowest for skeletal anteroposterior measures

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maxillary tooth distal movement is a treatment option for Class II malocclusion. This prospective clinical study (split-mouth design) was aimed to compare chondroitin sulphate (CS) levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), the rates of tooth movement, and patient pain and discomfort during segmental maxillary posterior tooth distal movement using either 120 or 180 g of retraction force.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (6 males and 14 females; aged 18.85 ± 4.38 years) with Class II malocclusion were recruited. The force magnitudes were controlled at 120 or 180 g,

Class II malocclusions represent 60% of our treatments, 50% of which are strictly unilateral or asymmetric. These require asymmetric therapeutic methods which conventional techniques answer most of the time poorly because of anchorage matters and three-dimensional control. Along with this, there is an increase in adult treatments demand requiring all together efficiency and aesthetics. The thoughtful combination of lingual and miniscrew techniques allows us to confidently treat Class II subdivision in adults. Therefore, we propose an approach which meets the esthetic needs of adults as well as

This case report refers to an 18-year-old female who suffered from dental trauma when she was 7 years old caused by a bicycle accident. Her maxillary right central incisor was avulsed, and the left one was extrusively luxated. The left central incisor was correctly repositioned and immobilized with a semi-rigid splint. The right one could not be found. She presented with class II malocclusion and severe negative arch-length discrepancies in both arches. The treatment objectives were the following: recover smile esthetics by replacing the maxillary right central incisor, correct the class II re

Maxillary canines and first molars are the most common ectopic teeth in young people. Ectopic buccal eruption of maxillary canines is strongly associated with lack of space or crowding in the dental arch. This report demonstrates the management of a buccally erupted maxillary canine in an 11-year, 8-month-old boy without sufficient space. The patient had a mostly dental Class II occlusion and was in the late mixed dentition, and the root development of his canines was consistent with his dental age. To correct the distal occlusion and gain space in the maxillary arch for the eruption of both c
