Partnership, sexuality, and fertility-related communication: findings from a register-based study among long-term hematological cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Even though the number of hematological cancer survivors suffering from long-term and late consequences of their disease is growing, knowledge about their situation regarding partnership, sexuality, and fertility-related communication is sparse to date. METHODS: We recruited survivors of hematological malignancies (≥ 3 years after diagnosis) from two cancer registries in Germany. We applied validated instruments and study-specific items on satisfaction with partnership, sexual functioning, and fertility-related communication with physicians. We provided descriptive statistics and con

A GBD 2019 study of health and Sustainable Development Goal gains and forecasts to 2030 in Spain.

This study aimed to report mortality, risk factors, and burden of diseases in Spain. The Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors 2019 estimates the burden due to 369 diseases, injuries, and impairments and 87 risk factors and risk factor combinations. Here, we detail the updated Spain 1990-2019 burden of disease estimates and project certain metrics up to 2030. In 2019, leading causes of death were ischaemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Alzheimer's disease, and lung cancer. Main causes of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) were ischaemic heart

Precancer and cancer-associated depression and anxiety among older adults with blood cancers in the United States.

For patients with blood cancers, comorbid mental health disorders at diagnosis likely affect the entire disease trajectory, as they can interfere with disease information processing, lead to poor coping, and even cause delays in care. We aimed to characterize the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with blood cancers. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database, we identified patients ≥67 years old diagnosed with lymphoma, myeloma, leukemia, or myelodysplastic syndromes between 2000 and 2015. We determined the prevalence of precancer depression and anxi

Use of a newly developed minimally invasive bilateral fixed angle locking system in the treatment of pathological pelvic fractures: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic bone disease (MBD) and its complications have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Pathological fractures are a particular problem as they affect patient mobility and pose a high risk of non-union. The pelvis is frequently affected by MBD and its fixation is challenging. We present a case series of three pathological sacral fractures treated with a new minimally invasive bilateral fixed angle locking system. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1 and 2 suffered a pathological transforaminal sacral fracture without adequate trauma in stage 4 carcinomas (gastric cancer a

Burden of non-communicable diseases among adolescents aged 10-24 years in the EU, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019.

BackgroundDisability and mortality burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have risen worldwide; however, the NCD burden among adolescents remains poorly described in the EU.MethodsEstimates were retrieved from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Causes of NCDs were analysed at three different levels of the GBD 2019 hierarchy, for which mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were extracted. Estimates, with the 95% uncertainty intervals (UI), were retrieved for EU Member Stat

Staff perspectives on the feasibility of a clinical pathway for anxiety and depression in cancer care, and mid-implementation adaptations.

BackgroundClinical pathways (CPs) are intended to standardise and improve care but do not always produce positive outcomes, possibly because they were not adapted to suit the specific context in which they were enacted. This qualitative study aimed to explore staff perspectives of implementation of a CP for routine screening, assessment, referral and management of anxiety and depression (the ADAPT CP) for patients with cancer, focussing on perceived feasibility of the CP and negotiated adaptations made during the implementation phase.MethodsThe ADAPT CP was implemented in 12 urban and regional

Assessment of depression symptoms among cancer patients: a cross-sectional study from a developing country.

Cancer patients experience psychological symptoms such as depression during the cancer treatment period, which increases the burden of symptoms. Depression severity can be assessed using the beck depression inventory (BDI II). The purpose of the study was to use BDI-II scores to measure depression symptoms in cancer patients at a large tertiary hospital in Palestine. A convenience sample of 271 cancer patients was used for a cross-sectional survey. There are descriptions of demographic, clinical, and lifestyle aspects. In addition, the BDI-II is a tool for determining the severity of depressio

Measuring quality of life in people living with and beyond cancer in the UK.

PurposeThe aim of this study was to identify the most appropriate measure of quality of life (QoL) for patients living with and beyond cancer.MethodsOne hundred eighty-two people attending cancer clinics in Central London at various stages post-treatment, completed a series of QoL measures: FACT-G, EORTC QLQ-C30 , IOCv2 (positive and negative subscales) and WEMWBS, a wellbeing measure. These measures were chosen as the commonest measures used in previous research. Correlation tests were used to assess the association between scales. Participants were also asked about pertinence and ease of com

Association of p-phenylenediamine exposure with alterations of pulmonary function, pruritus and health-related quality of life in hair dye factory workers: a cross-sectional study.

P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is a common component of hair dye, which can cause skin contact allergy and asthma with impaired pulmonary function. However, the adverse effects of occupational exposure to different dose PPD was rarely mentioned. We recruited 124 workers from a hair dye factory to explore the association of occupational PPD exposure on pulmonary function, pruritus and health related quality of life (HRQL). We categorized exposure to PPD into 3 levels: lower exposure group (< 0.00001 mg/m3); middle exposure group (0.00001-0.00033 mg/m3); higher exposure group (0.00033-0.047 mg/m3). Th

Strategies for promoting exercise adherence within a cancer exercise recovery program: a qualitative case study.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) plays an important role in physical health and well-being for cancer survivors. However, cancer survivors demonstrate low adherence to cancer PA guidelines. Research is needed to understand how to optimize delivery of cancer PA programs to enhance participation and adherence. In this study, we conducted an instrumental qualitative case study of a clinical cancer exercise recovery program (CERP) demonstrating high adherence (over 90% session completion), with the goal of understanding implementation strategies that patients link to higher program adherence. Austrian Syndrome - A Devastating Osler's Triad: Case Report and Literature Review.

Austrian syndrome is a rare triad of meningitis, pneumonia, and endocarditis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. We present a case of the Austrian syndrome in the oldest patient in the reviewed literature, with no other classically described risk factors. She had an unusual initial presentation and microorganism portal of entry. Her hospital course was complicated by the diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathy, septic knee joint, septic brain emboli and respiratory failure. We also provide an extensive review of available literature of this commonly unrecognized entity.

Psychiatric morbidity and poor follow-up underlie suboptimal functional and survival outcomes in Huntington's disease.

BackgroundHuntington's disease (HD), an inherited, often late-onset, neurodegenerative disorder, is considered to be a rare, orphan disease. Research into its genetic correlates and services for those affected are inadequate in most low-middle income countries, including India. The apparent 'incurability' often deters symptomatic and rehabilitative care, resulting in poor quality of life and sub-optimal outcomes. There are no studies assessing disease burden and outcomes from India.MethodsWe attempted to evaluate individuals diagnosed to have HD at our tertiary-care center between 2013 and 201

Metastatic gallbladder cancer presenting as numb chin syndrome: A case report and literature review.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is an uncommon malignancy that is highly aggressive in the advanced stages. However, it rarely metastasizes to the mandible. Numb chin syndrome (NCS) is a rare neurological manifestation associated with various underlying causes, including occult primary cancers and distant metastases. It is often considered to be a significant indicator of malignancy, and thorough investigation is essential in the presence of unclear etiology. The current study reported on the case of a 69-year-old Japanese woman who presented with numbness and mild pain in the lower lip and chin area

Robot therapy aids mental health in patients with hematological malignancy during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a protective isolation unit.

Patients with hematological malignancy experience physical and psychological pain, such as a sense of isolation and confinement due to intensive chemotherapy in a protective isolation unit (PIU). We examined whether the intervention of a robotic puppy, aibo (manufactured by Sony), could improve patients' mental health as an alternative therapy for pet therapy, which is not feasible in PIU. This study included 21 patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) (n = 16) or autologous HSCT (n = 5). The patients were randomly divided into the aibo and control groups.
