BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term radiologic sequelae of pediatric septic arthritis of the shoulder and identify characteristic patterns of residual proximal humeral deformity.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of children treated for septic arthritis of the shoulder at a tertiary pediatric orthopaedic center between 2010 and 2024. Inclusion criteria were confirmed septic shoulder, complete radiographic records, and a minimum 2-year follow-up. Radiographs at final follow-up were analyzed for epiphyseal, physeal, and articular abnormalities, and sequelae were c

This study aimed to analyse postoperative gait characteristics in patients with fibrous dysplasia (FD) of the proximal femur with varus deformity and to comprehensively assess limb function. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent surgical correction between January 2013 and October 2017. Limb length discrepancy and mechanical axis alignment were evaluated at follow-up. Gait parameters of both lower limbs were assessed using a three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis system, and the affected side was compared with the contralateral limb. Limb alignment and length were largely restored,

Goltz syndrome, also known as focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH), is a rare X-linked dominant genetic disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the PORCN gene, which is crucial for Wnt protein secretion and signaling during embryonic development. The syndrome primarily affects females, as hemizygous males with pathogenic variants in the gene typically die in utero, while surviving males are usually mosaic for the variant. Patients typically present with diverse phenotypic features, including dermal hypoplasia, musculoskeletal abnormalities, ocular malformations, and dental defects, often dis…

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is an ultra-rare premature aging disorder caused predominantly by a de novo LMNA c.1824C>T mutation that produces progerin, a truncated and permanently farnesylated lamin A isoform. Progerin accumulation disrupts nuclear lamina integrity and chromatin organization, inducing persistent DNA damage responses, telomere attrition, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cellular senescence. These processes drive a multisystem clinical phenotype characterized by growth impairment, lipodystrophy, musculoskeletal abnormalities, and rapidly progressive vascular diseas…

INTRODUCTION: Xanthomatosis is an atypical pseudotumor of connective tissue characterized by the accumulation of lipid-laden histiocytes, often manifesting as encapsulated yellowish masses. It is commonly associated with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). This case report aims to present a rare instance of bilateral xanthomatosis affecting the Achilles tendons in a 42-year-old male, which underscores the importance of identifying clinical and radiological findings of this condition to facilitate early diagnosis and intervention for related musculoskeletal and metabolic disorders.

Background and Objectives: Meniscal pathologies are common abnormalities of the knee joint and a frequent cause of knee pain. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to ensure appropriate treatment. Ultrasonography is increasingly used due to its accessibility, cost- and time-efficiency, and capacity for dynamic assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of ultrasonography in identifying specific types of meniscal tears and to assess their frequency of occurrence. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to assess the frequency and sonographic appearance of va

Background/Objectives: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) is the most common subtype of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), a heterogeneous group of hereditary connective tissue disorders. The hallmark features of hEDS include generalized joint hypermobility (GJH), soft or velvety skin, and persistent joint pain. The molecular etiology of hEDS remains unknown, and diagnosis is primarily clinical. The updated diagnostic criteria for hEDS requires the fulfillment of three criteria: (1) GJH, (2) a combination of musculoskeletal and systemic manifestations consistent with a connective tissue dis

Clubfoot (CF) is one of the most common musculoskeletal congenital abnormalities. Despite having optimal methods for its treatment, factors associated with the recurrence of CF treatment continue to be a topic of interest. The aim of this study was to perform a scoping review of the existing literature on factors associated with the recurrence of CF following treatment with the Ponseti method in children under 5 years of age. A scoping literature review was conducted in March 2024 using PubMed and Embase databases, and a structured research strategy. Screening of articles was performed by inde

Becker nevus syndrome is a rare cutaneous disorder characterized by the presence of a hyperpigmented patch of skin typically occurring on the upper trunk, often associated with hypertrichosis, and sometimes associated with musculoskeletal abnormalities ipsilateral to the nevus. Becker nevus syndrome can lead to breast hypoplasia. Unlike other forms of breast hypoplasia, treatment should begin before the completion of breast development. Due to the rarity of the disease, breast reconstruction in these patients has no gold-standard approach, and treatment is often delayed. Therefore, our case re…

The Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE) was developed to facilitate the identification of musculoskeletal pain. The aim of the current study was to collate behavioural data using the RHpE from horses at competitions assumed by their owners and/or riders to be fit for competition. The objectives were to quantify the frequency of occurrence of behaviours in pain-free horses and those with lameness or abnormalities of canter and to determine any differences between disciplines and levels of competition. The RHpE was applied to 1358 horses competing in Grand Prix (GP) dressage (n = 211), 5* three-da

BACKGROUND: Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a rare congenital cutaneous syndrome characterized by capillary malformation and extensive dermal melanosis. The complexity of PPV is reflected in its evolving classification systems. Systemic manifestations encompass ocular, neurological, vascular, musculoskeletal, and renal involvement. The pathogenesis, linked to abnormalities in neural cell development and migration, contributes to the varied clinical features of PPV. We describe a rare case of a 21-month-old Saudi girl who presented to our clinic with features of PPV type 2a.

Population declines were documented in multiple ruminant species in Montana and surrounding states starting in 1995. While weather, food sources, and predation certainly contributed, the declines were often attributed, at least partly, to unexplained factors. Use of teratogenic agrichemicals, notably neonicotinoid insecticides, fungicides, and glyphosate-based herbicides, massively increased regionally in 1994-96. The question explored in this review is whether this vastly increased use of these teratogenic pesticides might have contributed to observed population declines. We provide reference

Foot and ankle disorders are common during pregnancy, driven by significant physiological changes including weight distribution, hormonal fluctuations, and fluid balance. These changes often result in conditions such as varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), edema, overpronation, ankle sprains, metatarsalgia, stress fractures, ligament tears, synovitis, tendon tears, tenosynovitis, paratenonitis, plantar fasciitis, and Morton's neuroma. This paper emphasizes the diagnostic utility of ultrasound for these conditions, given its safety, non-invasiveness, and real-time imagi

BACKGROUND Coccidioidomycosis is caused by the fungi Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii, which are endemic to the southwestern United States and other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis is the most common form of coccidioidomycosis. Rarely, coccidioidal infection disseminates to meninges, bones, skin, and soft tissues. While fluconazole remains the first line of treatment and is used for most patients, voriconazole is used in selected refractory cases of coccidioidomycosis. Voriconazole has more fluorine molecules than other azoles, and over time the

BACKGROUND: Many of the 700,000 American military personnel deployed to the Persian Gulf region in 1990 and 1991 have since reported health symptoms of unknown etiology. This cluster of symptoms has been labeled Gulf War Illness and include chronic musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, headaches, memory and attention difficulties, gastrointestinal complaints, skin abnormalities, breathing problems, and mood and sleep problems [1,2]. There have been few high-quality intervention trials and no strong evidence to support available treatments [3]. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art with benefits t

The prevalence of malnutrition in patients with cancer is one of the highest of all patient groups. Weight loss (WL) is a frequent manifestation of malnutrition in cancer and several large-scale studies have reported that involuntary WL affects 50-80% of patients with cancer, with the degree of WL dependent on tumour site, type and stage of disease. The study of body composition in oncology using computed tomography has unearthed the importance of both low muscle mass (sarcopenia) and low muscle attenuation as important prognostic indications of unfavourable outcomes including poorer tolerance
