Classifying Heart Sounds Using Images of Motifs, MFCC and Temporal Features.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, and its early detection is a key to improving long-term health outcomes. The auscultation of the heart is still an important method in the medical process because it is very simple and cheap. To detect possible heart anomalies at an early stage, an automatic method enabling cardiac health low-cost screening for the general population would be highly valuable. By analyzing the phonocardiogram signals, it is possible to perform cardiac diagnosis and find possible anomalies at an early-term. Therefore, the development of intellige

Accurate Hand Detection from Single-Color Images by Reconstructing Hand Appearances.

Hand detection is a crucial pre-processing procedure for many human hand related computer vision tasks, such as hand pose estimation, hand gesture recognition, human activity analysis, and so on. However, reliably detecting multiple hands from cluttering scenes remains to be a challenging task because of complex appearance diversities of dexterous human hands (e.g., different hand shapes, skin colors, illuminations, orientations, and scales, etc.) in color images. To tackle this problem, an accurate hand detection method is proposed to reliably detect multiple hands from a single color image u

Nasal cytology with deep learning techniques.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, cytological observations in the Rhinology field are being increasingly utilized. This development has taken place over the last two decades and has proven to be fundamental in defining new nosological entities and in driving changes in the previous classification of rhinitis. The simplicity of the technique and its low invasiveness make nasal cytology a practical diagnostic tool for all rhino-allergology services. Furthermore, since it allows the monitoring of responses to treatment, this method plays an important role in guiding a more effective and less expensive

Ω-Net (Omega-Net): Fully automatic, multi-view cardiac MR detection, orientation, and segmentation with deep neural networks.

Pixelwise segmentation of the left ventricular (LV) myocardium and the four cardiac chambers in 2-D steady state free precession (SSFP) cine sequences is an essential preprocessing step for a wide range of analyses. Variability in contrast, appearance, orientation, and placement of the heart between patients, clinical views, scanners, and protocols makes fully automatic semantic segmentation a notoriously difficult problem. Here, we present Ω-Net (Omega-Net): A novel convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for simultaneous localization, transformation into a canonical orientation, and

Optimising the Apnoea Classification Performance of a Neural Network Classifier Processing ECG-Oximetry Signals.

In this paper we investigate using principal components analysis to optimize the performance of a neural network system processing simultaneously acquired electrocardiogram (ECG) and oximetry signals. The algorithm identifies epochs of normal breathing, central apnoea (CA), and obstructive apnoea (OA) by processing a pooled feature set containing information capturing the desaturations from the oximeter sensor as well as time and spectral features from the ECG. Training and testing of the system was facilitated with a dataset of 125 scored polysomnogram recordings with accompanying respiratory

Anterior osteophyte discrimination in lumbar vertebrae using size-invariant features.

Radiologists often examine X-rays of cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae for determining the presence of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. For individual vertebra assessment, the boundary increasingly digresses from the general rectangular shape as the vertebra becomes less normal in appearance. For an abnormal vertebra, bony growths ('osteophytes') may appear at the vertebral comers, resulting in a change in the vertebra's shape. Image processing techniques are presented for computing size-invariant, convex hull-based features to highlight anterior osteophytes. Feature evaluation of 714 lu

A dual-time-scale cooperative memory mechanism for spiking neural networks.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs), as core models of brain-inspired computing, simulate the computational mechanisms of biological neural systems. However, existing models lack the division of labor and collaboration mechanisms found in biological fast and slow neural populations, making it difficult for single-timescale neural populations to simultaneously capture transient events and maintain long-term dependencies. Furthermore, these models are deeply coupled with specific data and tasks. Therefore, a spiking neural network with dual-timescale cooperative memory is proposed to simulate the div

cuBNM: GPU-Accelerated Brain Network Modeling.

Brain network modeling uses computer simulations to infer about latent neural properties at micro- and mesoscales by fitting brain dynamic models to empirical data of individual subjects or groups. However, computational costs of (individualized) model fitting is a major bottleneck, limiting the practical feasibility of this approach to larger cohorts and more complex models, and highlighting the need for scalable simulation implementations. Here, we introduce cuBNM, a Python package which leverages parallel processing of graphics processing units to massively accelerate simulations of brain n

The influence of relationship closeness on default-mode network connectivity during social interactions.

Reciprocated trust plays a critical role in forming and maintaining relationships, and has consistently been shown to implicate neural circuits involved in reward-related processing and social cognition. Less is known about neural network connectivity during social interactions involving trust, however, particularly as a function of closeness between an investor and a trustee. We examined network reactivity and connectivity in participants who played an economic trust game with close friends, strangers and a computer. Network reactivity analyses showed enhanced activation of the default-mode n

Why Use Position Features in Liver Segmentation Performed by Convolutional Neural Network.

Liver volumetry is an important tool in clinical practice. The calculation of liver volume is primarily based on Computed Tomography. Unfortunately, automatic segmentation algorithms based on handcrafted features tend to leak segmented objects into surrounding tissues like the heart or the spleen. Currently, convolutional neural networks are widely used in various applications of computer vision including image segmentation, while providing very promising results. In our work, we utilize robustly segmentable structures like the spine, body surface, and sagittal plane. They are used as key poin

[Research on electrical impedance tomography for pediatric pneumonia based on an improved radial basis function neural network].

In the diagnosis of pediatric pneumonia, the weak conductivity contrast of lung tissues leads to limited image resolution in electrical impedance tomography (EIT). To improve the quality of image reconstruction, this study proposes a radial basis function neural network optimized by the crested porcupine optimizer and adaptive moment estimation (CPOA-RBFNN). By integrating the global search capability of swarm intelligence with the adaptive characteristics of gradient based optimization, the proposed method enhances both imaging accuracy and robustness. A total of 23 000 simulated datasets of

Heterojunction nanofluidic memristors based on peptide chain valves for neuromorphic applications.

Memristors exhibit significant potential for neuromorphic computing due to their unique properties. This study introduces a heterojunction nanofluidic memristor (HJNFM) and explores its applications in simulating synapses and constructing neural networks. The HJNFM consists of a SnS2 and MoS2 heterojunction nanochannel with a peptide chain valve. The opening and closing dynamics of peptide chain valve alter ionic conductance of the nanochannel and realize the memristor characteristics. The sequence of the peptide chain also affects the electrical properties of HJNFM. Additionally, by setting u

A graph neural network-based approach for predicting SARS-CoV-2-human protein interactions from multiview data.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demanded urgent and accelerated action toward developing effective therapeutic strategies. Drug repurposing models (in silico) are in high demand and require accurate and reliable molecular interaction data. While experimentally verified viral-host interaction data (SARS-CoV-2-human interactions published on April 30, 2020) provide an invaluable resource, these datasets include only a limited number of high-confidence interactions. Here, we extend these resources using a deep learning-based multiview graph neural network approach, coupled with optimal transport-based

Wearable-based estimation of continuous 3D knee moments during running using a convolutional neural network.

This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning method to estimate continuous 3D knee moments during running from wearable sensor data. Reference knee moments were calculated from 19 recreational runners during treadmill running at varying slopes (0 ± 5 % incline), speeds (self-selected ± 1 km/h) and in 3 types of footwear. A convolutional neural network was trained on data from 7 inertial measuring units (feet, shanks, thighs, sacrum) and a pair of pressure insoles. We assessed performance over continuous time windows (CONT) and during stance phases (PHSS) by intraclass-correlatio

Diagnostic accuracy of convolutional neural network algorithms to distinguish gastrointestinal obstruction on conventional radiographs in a pediatric population.

PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal (GI) dilatations are frequently observed in radiographs of pediatric patients who visit emergency departments with acute symptoms such as vomiting, pain, constipation, or diarrhea. Timely and accurate differentiation of whether there is an obstruction requiring surgery in these patients is crucial to prevent complications such as necrosis and perforation, which can lead to death. In this study, we aimed to use convolutional neural network (CNN) models to differentiate healthy children with normal intestinal gas distribution in abdominal radiographs from those with GI
