Parasympathetic denervation of the ciliary muscle following panretinal photocoagulation.

Cynomolgus monkeys underwent unilateral panretinal scatter photocoagulation (PRP) and/or nasal and temporal horizontal retinal meridional photocoagulation (HRMP) with xenon arc or argon or krypton laser light. Shortly thereafter, in the PRP-treated eyes, accommodative responsiveness to topical eserine and electrical stimulation of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EWN) was diminished, accommodative responsiveness to intramuscular (i.m.) pilocarpine was enhanced, and the number of muscarinic receptors in the ciliary muscle was reduced compared to the contralateral controls. In most instances, these

Effects of parasympathectomy on androgen responses of the rat submandibular gland.

The effects of androgen on the activities of esteropeptidase and delta 4-3-ketosteroid 5 alpha-reductase were investigated. Ratios of the denervated side to the non-operated side for gland weight and esteropeptidase activity were higher in androgenized females than in untreated females. The specific activities of 5 alpha-reductase were increased by denervation but the total activities were decreased. The results suggest that parasympathectomy leads to higher androgen responsiveness in the rat submandibular gland, which relates to the observed reduction in weight loss of the gland and the incre

A comparison of the effects of bilateral sections of the chorda tympani nerve and extirpation of the submaxillary and sublingual salivary glands on the eating and drinking patterns of the rat.

The chorda tympani nerve (CT) innervates the fungiform papillae on the tip of the tongue and has been considered an important nerve for the sense of taste. The CT also contains the parasympathetic supply to the submaxillary and sublingual salivary glands. Therefore, changes in taste or feeding behavior following bilateral sections of CT are caused by both degeneration of fungiform papillae and the inevitable partial desalivation of the rat. In the present experiments we compared the effects of bilateral chorda tympani nerve sections with extirpation of submaxillary and sublingual glands on dai

Anticholinergic, antimuscarinic bronchodilators.

The anticholinergic, antimuscarinic compounds are potent and hitherto neglected bronchodilators. Although atropine itself has drawbacks, principally related to its rapid absorption and consequent systemic side effects, its quaternary ammonium congeners, atropine methonitrate and ipratropium bromide, are poorly absorbed. When given by inhalation, they are as effective bronchodilators as atropine is, but longer acting and much less prone to side effects. They act predominantly at a site that is different from adrenergic agents and thus afford an alternative, complementary approach to the treatme

Prostaglandin-induced bicarbonate secretion in the canine stomach: characteristics and evidence for a cholinergic mechanism.

Using a canine chambered stomach preparation, the effect of topical 16,16-dimethyl prostaglandin E2 (dmPGE2) in neutral solution (150 mN NaCl) on gastric mucosal bicarbonate (HCO-3) secretion was assessed. Compared to control studies in which neutral solution alone bathed the epithelium, dmPGE2 (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 micrograms/ml), when applied to gastric mucosa, significantly increased the output of gastric HCO-3 in a stepwise and dose-related fashion. Accompanying these effects in HCO-3 output were similar increases in sodium, potassium, chloride, and gastric perfusate volume. IN other stu

Scopolamine self-administration: cholinergic involvement in reward mechanisms.

Naive rats readily learned to self-administer scopolamine, a centrally active anticholinergic antimuscarinic agent, by the intravenous route; drug intake remained constant while response rates decreased with increasing unit dose ((0.005-0.02 mg/kg/infusion). Increases and decreases in scopolamine responding were elicited by pretreatment with muscarinic agonists and antagonists, respectively. An anticholinergic action at muscarinic synapses appears to be sufficient for reinforcing efficacy; such an action may mediate, in part, the addictive properties of other drugs (e.g., opiates and phencycli

Neuromuscular taping reduces blood pressure in systemic arterial hypertension.

Systemic arterial hypertension, a well-known cause of morbidity, is associated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Neuromuscular taping (also known as kinesio taping, medical taping and Vendje neuromuscular) allows movement and muscle activity to treat pain, muscle disorders and lymphoedema, in which its mode of action may involve muscular stimulation leading to increased local blood circulation or stimulating dermatological, muscular and fascial structures with a form of passive massage. We hypothesised that neuromuscular taping may reduce blood pressure in systemic arterial hyp

Duration-dependent effects of dry cupping on autonomic modulation and trapezius tissue compliance in smartphone users: a dose-finding study.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged smartphone use is associated with forward head posture, increased trapezius stiffness, and altered autonomic nervous system regulation. Dry cupping applies localized negative pressure-mediated mechanical stimulation that may influence myofascial properties and autonomic activity; however, its interactive effects of pressure and duration remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of different pressure and duration combinations of dry cupping on autonomic modulation indexed by heart rate variability (HRV) and trapezius tissue compliance in smartphone users. Sleep and cardiac autonomic modulation in older adults: Insights from an at-home study with auditory deep sleep stimulation.

The autonomic nervous system regulates cardiovascular activity during sleep, likely impacting cardiovascular health. Aging, a primary cardiovascular risk factor, is associated with cardiac autonomic disbalance and diminished sleep slow waves. Therefore, slow waves may be linked to aging, autonomic activity and cardiovascular health. However, it is unclear how sleep and slow waves are linked to cardiac autonomic profiles across multiple nights in older adults. We conducted a randomized, crossover trial involving healthy adults aged 62-78 years. Across 2 weeks, we applied auditory stimulation to

Autonomic nervous system testing may not distinguish multiple system atrophy from Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Formal laboratory testing of autonomic function is reported to distinguish between patients with Parkinson's disease and those with multiple system atrophy (MSA), but such studies segregate patients according to clinical criteria that select those with autonomic dysfunction for the MSA category. OBJECTIVE: To characterise the profiles of autonomic disturbances in patients in whom the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease or MSA used criteria other than autonomic dysfunction. METHODS: 47 patients with parkinsonism and autonomic symptoms who had undergone autonomic laboratory testing we

Sphincter of Oddi motility.

After a short introduction (chapter 1), anatomy is described in chapter 2. The sphincter of Oddi (SO) can be divided into the choledochal, pancreatic and ampullar sphincter in addition to the intermediate fibres. In anatomic studies the pancreatic and ampullar sphincters are described in only one third and sixth respectively. This is in disaccordance with manometric studies where SO activity always is registered in the pancreatic sphincter after total biliary sphincterotomy. Chapter 3 discusses whether or not the SO is a true sphincter. Activity simultaneous with the duodenum occurs in the int

Cognitive changes and emotional heart rate variability dynamics in subjective cognitive decline: An exploratory longitudinal neuropsychophysiological study.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is increasingly recognised as a potential preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease, yet the physiological mechanisms underlying its progression remain poorly understood. This longitudinal study examined whether heart rate variability (HRV), a non-invasive marker of autonomic nervous system regulation, could serve as an early psychophysiological indicator of cognitive vulnerability in older adults with SCD. Twenty-one participants meeting established SCD criteria completed two identical experimental sessions approximately 12 months apart. Each session included

Enhanced cardiac vagal tone in mental fatigue: Analysis of heart rate variability in Time-on-Task, recovery, and reactivity.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been suggested as a useful tool to assess fatigue-sensitive psychological operations. The present study uses a between and within-subject design with a cognitively demanding task and a documentary viewing condition, to examine the temporal profile of HRV during reactivity, Time-on-Task (ToT), and recovery. In the cognitive task group, participants worked on a bimodal 2-back task with a game-like character (the Gatekeeper task) for about 1.5 hours, followed by a 12-minute break, and a post-break block of performance (about 18 min). In the other group, participan

The potential role of vagus-nerve stimulation in the treatment of HIV-associated depression: a review of literature.

Depression is the most common comorbidity and neuropsychiatric complication in HIV. Estimates suggest that the prevalence rate for depression among HIV-infected individuals is three times that of the general population. The association between HIV and clinical depression is complex; however, chronic activation of inflammatory mechanisms, which disrupt central nervous system (CNS) function, may contribute to this association. Disruptions in CNS function can result in cognitive disorders, social withdrawal, fatigue, apathy, psychomotor impairment, and sleep disturbances, which are common manifes

Impaired neural structure and function contributing to autonomic symptoms in congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) patients show major autonomic alterations in addition to their better-known breathing deficiencies. The processes underlying CCHS, mutations in the PHOX2B gene, target autonomic neuronal development, with frame shift extent contributing to symptom severity. Many autonomic characteristics, such as impaired pupillary constriction and poor temperature regulation, reflect parasympathetic alterations, and can include disturbed alimentary processes, with malabsorption and intestinal motility dyscontrol. The sympathetic nervous system changes can exe

Nighttime Administration of Nicotine Improves Hepatic Glucose Metabolism via the Hypothalamic Orexin System in Mice.

Nicotine is known to affect the metabolism of glucose; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, we here investigated wh … nic daily administration of nicotine suppressed hepatic gluconeogenesis via the hypothalamic orexin-parasympathetic nervous system. Thus, the results of the present study may provide an insight into novel chronotherapy for type 2 diabetes that targets the central cholinergic and orexinergic systems.

Integrative control of the lower urinary tract: preclinical perspective.

Storage and periodic expulsion of urine is regulated by a neural control system in the brain and spinal cord that coordinates the reciprocal activity of two functional units in the lower urinary tract (LUT): (a) a reservoir (the urinary bladder) and (b) an outlet (bladder neck, urethra and striated muscles of the urethral sphincter). Control of the bladder and urethral outlet is dependent on three sets of peripheral nerves: parasympathetic, sympathetic and somatic nerves that contain afferent as well as efferent pathways. Afferent neurons innervating the bladder have A-delta or C-fibre axons.
