The afferent pupillary defect in acute optic neuritis.

Twenty-two patients with acute optic neuritis were studied by the techniques of infrared pupillometry and visual evoked responses (VER) to pattern reversal. A relative afferent pupillary defect was found in all cases and the magnitude of this defect was found to be related to the amplitude, but not to the latency, of the VER. During follow-up the afferent defect was found to remain persistently abnormal while other methods of clinical evaluation could not demonstrate abnormality reliably. The amplitude of the VER also remained low.

Aging alters face expressions processing and recognition: insights on possible neural mechanisms.

The present work investigated how aging influences the different stages of face expression processing: fixation patterns, early perception, face motor response, and recognition. Thirty-four participants (17 young, 17 senior) were subjected to 1) recording of fixation patterns, 2) recording of the P100 and the N170 components of event-related potentials, 3) excitability of short intracortical inhibition (SICI) and intracortical facilitation (ICF) of the face primary motor cortex (face M1), and 4) recognition task during the passive viewing of neutral, happy, and sad faces expressions. Facial emotion recognition deficits following moderate-severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): re-examining the valence effect and the role of emotion intensity.

UNLABELLED: Many individuals who sustain moderate-severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are poor at recognizing emotional expressions, with a greater impairment in recognizing negative (e.g., fear, disgust, sadness, and anger) than positive emotions (e.g., happiness and surprise). It has been questioned whether this "valence effect" might be an artifact of the wide use of static facial emotion stimuli (usually full-blown expressions) which differ in difficulty rather than a real consequence of brain impairment. This study aimed to investigate the valence effect in TBI, while examining emotion

Can massive but passive exposure to faces contribute to face recognition abilities?

Recent studies have suggested that individuation of other-race faces is more crucial for enhancing recognition performance than exposure that involves categorization of these faces to an identity-irrelevant criterion. These findings were primarily based on laboratory training protocols that dissociated exposure and individuation by using categorization tasks. However, the absence of enhanced recognition following categorization may not simulate key aspects of real-life massive exposure without individuation to other-race faces. Real-life exposure spans years of seeing a multitude of faces, und

Neural mechanisms of context effects on face recognition: automatic binding and context shift decrements.

Although people do not normally try to remember associations between faces and physical contexts, these associations are established automatically, as indicated by the difficulty of recognizing familiar faces in different contexts ("butcher-on-the-bus" phenomenon). The present fMRI study investigated the automatic binding of faces and scenes. In the face-face (F-F) condition, faces were presented alone during both encoding and retrieval, whereas in the face/scene-face (FS-F) condition, they were presented overlaid on scenes during encoding but alone during retrieval (context change). Although

Semantic processing of neglected numbers.

While neglected stimuli can still be processed, few studies have directly addressed the issue of the unconscious access to semantics. In order to clarify this issue, we engaged four patients with unilateral left spatial neglect in a number comparison task. Each target number was preceded by a lateralized number prime, either in the intact or neglected hemifield (HF). Both group analyses and the intensive study of a single patient show that left (neglected) as well as right (consciously perceived) number primes affect performance: primes representing quantities that fall on the same side of the

ADHD and schizophrenia phenomenology: visual scanpaths to emotional faces as a potential psychophysiological marker?

Commonalities in the clinical phenomenology and psychopharmacology of ADHD and schizophrenia are reviewed. The potential of psychostimulants to produce psychotic symptoms emphasizes the need for objective psychophysiological distinctions between these disorders. Impaired emotion perception in both disorders is discussed. It is proposed that visual scanpaths to facial expressions of emotion might prove a potentially useful psychophysiological distinction between ADHD and schizophrenia. There is consistent evidence that both facial affect recognition and scanpaths to facial expressions are impai

Dynamic coupling between the lateral occipital-cortex, default-mode, and frontoparietal networks during bistable perception.

The lateral occipital cortex (LOC), a visual area known to be involved in object recognition, was dynamically coupled with each of two distributed patterns of neural activity depending upon the percept (default or alternative) elicited by a bistable figure. The two distributed patterns included core nodes of the default-mode and frontoparietal networks (FPN), and they were most highly coupled to each other during the alternative percept, whereas they were less coupled during the default percept. Surprisingly, the regions associated with the nonengaged percept exhibited the highest connectivity

How affordance similarity impacts µ rhythm desynchronization during object selection.

Visual scenes typically contain multiple objects, each evoking potential actions ("object affordances"). Studies demonstrated that when several objects are presented, the similarity of their affordances can slow perceptual judgments. Here, we investigated whether the cost of affordance similarity is reflected at the neural level. We aimed to better identify how and when the similarity of affordances impacts the activity of the motor neural network, through µ rhythm desynchronization. We also investigated the influence of thematic relations between objects on this phenomenon. Forty participants

Using fMRI Representations of Single Objects to Predict Multiple Objects in Working Memory in Human Occipitotemporal and Posterior Parietal Cortices.

Research in visual perception has shown that in sensory areas, neural responses to a pair of objects presented together can be approximated by the linear average of the responses of each object shown alone. In this study, we ask if such an averaging relationship is unique to perceptual representations or if it also applies to representations maintained in visual working memory (VWM). By examining fMRI response pattern averaging across two experiments in both male and female human participants, we found that after properly accounting for task factors such as load, an averaging relationship also

Consequence of stroke for feature recall and binding in visual working memory.

Visual memory for objects involves the integration, or binding, of individual features into a coherent representation. We used a novel approach to assess feature binding, using a delayed-reproduction task in combination with computational modeling and lesion analysis. We assessed stroke patients and neurotypical controls on a visual working memory task in which spatial arrays of colored disks were presented. After a brief delay, participants either had to report the color of one disk cued by its location or the location of one disk cued by its color. Our results demonstrate that, in the contro

Neural Activity During Mental Rotation in Deaf Signers: The Influence of Long-Term Sign Language Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Mental rotation is the brain's visuospatial understanding of what objects are and where they belong. Previous research indicated that deaf signers showed behavioral enhancement for nonlinguistic visual tasks, including mental rotation. In this study, we investigated the neural difference of mental rotation processing between deaf signers and hearing nonsigners using blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). DESIGN: The participants performed a block-designed experiment, consisting of alternating blocks of comparison and rotation periods, sep

Suppression of salient objects prevents distraction in visual search.

To find objects of interest in a cluttered and continually changing visual environment, humans must often ignore salient stimuli that are not currently relevant to the task at hand. Recent neuroimaging results indicate that the ability to prevent salience-driven distraction depends on the current level of attentional control activity in frontal cortex, but the specific mechanism by which this control activity prevents salience-driven distraction is still poorly understood. Here, we asked whether salience-driven distraction is prevented by suppressing salient distractors or by preferentially up

Neuroanatomic correlates of the feature-salience hierarchy in face processing: an fMRI -adaptation study.

Previous fMRI studies suggest that faces are represented holistically in human face processing regions. On the other hand, behavioral studies have also shown that some facial features are more salient than others for face recognition: the neural basis of this feature-salience hierarchy is not known. We used fMRI-adaptation together with a behavioral discrimination task and an ideal observer analysis to ask (1) whether different face parts contribute different amounts to the neural signal in face responsive regions, and (2) whether this response correlates more with the behavioral performance o

Spatiotemporal brain dynamics of emotional face processing modulations induced by the serotonin 1A/2A receptor agonist psilocybin.

Emotional face processing is critically modulated by the serotonergic system. For instance, emotional face processing is impaired by acute psilocybin administration, a serotonin (5-HT) 1A and 2A receptor agonist. However, the spatiotemporal brain mechanisms underlying these modulations are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the spatiotemporal brain dynamics underlying psilocybin-induced modulations during emotional face processing. Electrical neuroimaging analyses were applied to visual evoked potentials in response to emotional faces, following psilocybin and placebo administration. Our

Early adverse experiences and the neurobiology of facial emotion processing.

To examine the neurobiological consequences of early institutionalization, the authors recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) from 3 groups of Romanian children--currently institutionalized, previously institutionalized but randomly assigned to foster care, and family-reared children--in response to pictures of happy, angry, fearful, and sad facial expressions of emotion. At 3 assessments (baseline, 30 months, and 42 months), institutionalized children showed markedly smaller amplitudes and longer latencies for the occipital components P1, N170, and P400 compared to family-reared children. Involuntary but not voluntary orienting contributes to a disengage deficit in visual neglect.

Patients with left neglect are particularly slow to respond to visual targets on their left when attention is first engaged to their right. This deficit is known as the disengage deficit (DD). Studies investigating the DD typically employ nonpredictive peripheral onset cues to measure involuntary orienting and predictive central arrow cues to measure voluntary orienting. A DD has been observed with both cues, suggesting that a DD occurs for involuntary and for voluntary orienting. Recent evidence questions this conclusion because nonpredictive central arrow cues trigger involuntary orienting.

Fragmented visuospatial processing in children with pervasive developmental disorder.

Children diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger Syndrome (AS) may be characterised by a similar perceptual focus on details as children with autistic disorder (AD). This was tested by analysing their performance in a visuoperceptual task [the Children's Embedded Figure Test (CEFT)] and a graphic reproduction task [the Rey Complex Figure Task (Rey CFT)]. Control groups were children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and typically developing children. The TS sample performed similarly to the normal control group in both tasks. The CEFT results di

Pattern ERG as an early glaucoma indicator in ocular hypertension: a long-term, prospective study.

PURPOSE: The conversion rate from untreated ocular hypertension (OHT) to glaucoma is only approximately 1% per year. Discrimination of nonconverters and potential converters would help reserve preventative treatment for those who need it and thus avoid unnecessary side effects and expenditure for those who do not. This prospective study was designed to assess the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) as an early indicator of dysfunction preceding glaucoma. METHODS: Ninety-five eyes of 54 patients with intraocular pressure > or =25 mm Hg (or > or =23 mm Hg with additional risk factors), normal visu
