Drug eruptions with lichenoid histology produced by captopril.

Three cases are presented with a rash due to captopril which, on histology, showed a lichenoid pattern of bandlike upper dermal infiltrate of lymphocytes and histiocytes, together with hydropic degeneration of the basal layer of the epidermis producing Civatte bodies and pigmentary incontinence. The rash presented either as a pityriasis rosea-like picture which appeared about three to six months after the onset of treatment in patients taking low doses, or alternatively, as lichenoid plaques which appeared three to six months after commencement of medication in patients taking high doses. Alth…

A double-blind, randomized comparative trial: flutrimazole 1% solution versus bifonazole 1% solution once daily in dermatomycoses.

In a double-blind, randomized study the efficacy and tolerance of flutrimazole 1% solution were compared with bifonazole 1% solution, applied once daily for 4 weeks, in 40 patients with culturally proven dermatophytosis or cutaneous candidosis. Forty patients with mycologically proven pityriasis versicolor were treated with once-daily application for 1 week. The four groups of patients and distribution of target lesions were similar, although in the flutrimazole group more patients had cutaneous candidosis (n = 8 versus n = 1). The distribution of the sum of clinical scores was also similar in…

Group A streptococcal antigen-specific T lymphocytes in guttate psoriatic lesions.

A strong association exists between guttate psoriasis and group A, beta-haemolytic streptococcal infections. To demonstrate the presence of streptococcal-specific T cells in psoriatic skin, T-cell lines (TLs) were established from biopsies of lesions from five patients with guttate psoriasis, and compared with TLs from five patients with eczema, five with lichen planus, two with pityriasis rosea and three with nickel contact dermatitis. TLs from purified protein derivative (PPD)-induced delayed hypersensitivity sites in three normal individuals were also studied. All five of the psoriatic TLs …

Beyond plaque psoriasis - pathogenesis and treatment of other psoriasis phenotypes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psoriasis vulgaris is the commonest presentation of psoriatic disease, but morphologic variants such as pustular psoriasis (PP) and a closely related disease, pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP), have been known for a long time, have been associated with rheumatologic manifestations indistinguishable from psoriatic arthritis (PsA) that may go unrecognized, and often represent a therapeutic conundrum. There is recent evidence that underlying genetic and pathogenetic differences may provide the basis for newer therapeutic approaches. RECENT FINDINGS: This narrative review highligh…

[Mucha-Habermann disease and orthotopic heart transplant. Case report].

BACKGROUND: Mucha-Habermann disease is a cutaneous clinical manifestation of unknown etiology that frequently appears in young patients. The aim was to present Mucha-Habermann disease that occurred in an old man who had a heart transplant. CLINICAL CASE: a 62 year-old male, heart transplant recipient, who four years after that transplantation procedure presented with papular lesions in neck, thoracic members of which extended to all body surfaces and that evolved vesicles and pustular lesions. A skin biopsy was performed and Mucha-Habermann disease was diagnosed. The patient was treated with

Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis: A Case Series.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is an uncommon disease that is inherited autosomal recessively. It has a heightened vulnerability to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which manifests as hyperpigmented or hypopigmented macular lesions, lesions resembling pityriasis versicolor (PV) and planar warts, and an increased risk of progressing to skin cancer, especially in sun-exposed areas. We report three cases of EV with varying presentations. One patient, a long-standing case of EV, developed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the vulva and inguinal region. Another patient had a rare associat…

Eruptive Seborrheic Keratoses Restricted to Plaque/Patch-Stage Mycosis Fungoides.

Eruptive seborrheic keratoses (ESK) are rare in dermatology. They are usually inflammatory in nature and may be encountered as Leser-Trélat sign. ESK may also be simultaneously observed with hepatic angiomas, chemotherapy, segmental neurofibromatosis, HIV or erythrodermic pityriasis rubra pilaris, psoriasis, and drug eruption. ESK may be transient and self-healing. Others recede after successful treatment of the underlying disease. In some instances, seborrheic keratoses may follow an isotopic response and remain strictly restricted to sites of previous eczema, photo-exposition or tattoos. A p…

Management of cosmetic embarrassment caused by Malassezia spp. with fruticose lichen Cladia using phylogenetic approach.

During anti-Malassezia screening of plants by CLSI broth microdilution method, Cladia aggregata (Swartz) Nyl. (family Cladoniaceae), a fruticose lichen from Sikkim (northeast Himalayan region), has been found effective at minimum inhibitory concentrations (mg/mL) of 2.72, 0.63, and 1.28 against yeast-like fungi namely, M. furfur, M. globosa and M. sympodialis, respectively. These test pathogens are responsible for pityriasis versicolor (PV) and seborrheic dermatitis (SD) in humans. We tried to establish the reason for variable MICs against various Malassezia spp. using bioinformatical tools, t…
