Increased cognitive functioning in symptomatic Huntington's disease as revealed by behavioral and event-related potential indices of auditory sensory memory and attention.

Cognitive functions are thought to deteriorate globally in late stages of various neurodegenerative disorders. Here we describe that this general assumption is not justified and fails in Huntington's disease (HD). Presymptomatic gene mutation carriers (pHDs) and healthy controls performed worse compared with symptomatic HDs in an auditory signal detection task. During task performance, behavioral data and event-related potentials (ERPs) [i.e., MMN (mismatch negativity), P3a, and RON (reorienting negativity)] were recorded. Not only behavioral performance but also neurophysiological correlates

Inversion of perceived direction of motion caused by spatial undersampling in two children with periventricular leukomalacia.

We report here two cases of two young diplegic patients with cystic periventricular leukomalacia who systematically, and with high sensitivity, perceive translational motion of a random-dot display in the opposite direction. The apparent inversion was specific for translation motion: Rotation and expansion motion were perceived correctly, with normal sensitivity. It was also specific for random-dot patterns, not occurring with gratings. For the one patient that we were able to test extensively, contrast sensitivity for static stimuli was normal, but was very low for direction discrimination at

Itch induced by a novel method leads to limbic deactivations a functional MRI study.

Functional brain imaging studies on itch usually use histamine as a stimulus and, in consequence, have to cope with the highly variable time course of this particular itch sensation. In this study, we describe a novel method of histamine application. To provoke itch, a mixture of histamine and codeine was applied through intradermally positioned microdialysis fiber. The itch was terminated by lidocaine application through the same fiber. During one fMRI session, this procedure was repeated four times in four different microdialysis fibers, including one placebo control. Itch ratings of the sub

Multidimensional scaling of schematically represented faces based on dissimilarity estimates and evoked potentials of differences amplitudes.

This study researches the input of the cerebral occipital and temporal cortex in the analysis of facial configuration and expressive characteristics. Analysis is based on the construction of a spherical model for the differentiation of schematically presented faces with quantitatively altering curvature of the mouth and brows. The model is designed using the method of multidimensional scaling of the dissimilarity judgments between stimuli (faces) and the amplitude of evoked potentials of differences (EPD) between abrupt stimulus changes recorded from the occipital and posterior temporal cortex

More learned irrelevance than perseveration errors in rule shifting in healthy subjects.

The present experiments examined the extent to which two possible sources of error affect healthy subjects' performance in a rule-shift task. All 115 participants first received a discrimination learning task, in which a pair of different visual stimuli was presented on each trial, one of which had to be identified as 'correct.' Each stimulus varied in two dimensions: a task-relevant and a task-irrelevant dimension. Feedback on correctness was given after each choice. After eight successive correct choices, the nature of the task-relevant dimension changed: the post-shift learning phase. Two t

Right inferior frontal contributions to visual spatial suppression and visuomotor performance.

BACKGROUND: Elite racket sports demand visuomotor responses at the millisecond level, requiring rapid prioritization of task-relevant information while suppressing competing or redundant signals. Such perceptual filtering is reflected in spatial suppression, which declines with aging and in clinical cognitive disorders. This study investigated whether visual spatial suppression in expert table tennis players (TTPs) was linked to visuomotor reaction time, and whether prefrontal-visuomotor dynamics were associated with this link. METHODS: We examined 28 expert TTPs and 31 healthy controls using

Mismatch between intact electrical excitability and lost heat pain in diabetic neuropathy.

Patterns of sensory involvement in diabetic neuropathy vary between studies and diagnostic approaches. Although some report early thermal deficits, others find predominant large-fiber changes, and hypersensitivity in early disease is inconsistently observed. Elevated heat pain thresholds (HPTs) may indicate either selective loss of heat transduction or advanced peripheral denervation of polymodal nociceptors. We examined whether thermal and mechanical pain functions align with psychophysical axonal excitability by combining German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain-quantitative sensory testi

Surgical treatment of complex scapular fractures: a single centre prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Conservative management is traditionally preferred for scapular fractures, but recent studies suggest that surgical intervention may improve outcomes in selected patients. This study evaluates functional and imaging outcomes, complication rates, and under-reported factors, such as duration of surgery and time from injury to definitive fixation, in surgically treated patients. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 12 patients who underwent surgery for scapular fractures between 2016 and 2022. Inclusion criteria were complex scapular fractures, defined as displaced

Impact of nasal septal deviation on olfactory bulb and olfactory tract morphometry.

BACKGROUND: The olfactory bulb (OB) is the central processing structure of olfactory information, but the effect of nasal septal deviation (NSD) on olfactory system morphology remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the morphometric and volumetric changes in the OB and olfactory tract (OT) associated with the direction and angle of NSD, and to investigate the relationship between these changes and septal morphometric parameters. METHODS: This prospective autopsy study included 86 cases aged 18-80 years, classified by computed tomography (CT) as right NSD (n = 46) and left NSD (n = 40).

Partial Recovery of Anosmia Since Childhood With Acquired Parosmia: Mechanistic Insights and Therapeutic Implications-A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Isolated congenital anosmia (ICA) traditionally represents an irreversible sensory disorder affecting 1 in 5,000-10,000 individuals. This case demonstrates rare partial olfactory recovery in childhood-onset anosmia following corticosteroid therapy, providing novel insights into olfactory neuroplasticity and therapeutic potential. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old woman with lifelong anosmia, diagnosed with ICA at age 20 using Sniffin' Sticks testing (2013), experienced first olfactory perceptions in 2014 following one week of oral corticosteroids and nine months of topical mometaso

Epidemiology of olfactory dysfunction in China: a nationwide population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory dysfunction is associated with adverse health outcomes such as neurodegenerative diseases. However, few large-scale epidemiological studies in China have focused on olfactory function using psychophysical testing. This study seeks to investigate the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction among healthy adults through a large-scale, nationwide survey and to examine its associations with demographic and other factors. METHODS: The study was conducted across multiple locations in China between 2023 and 2024, involving local residents aged 20 and above. A total of 12,153 partici

Attentional dysfunction in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness: a narrative review of mechanistic evidence.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a common chronic functional neuro-otological disorder characterized by persistent non-spinning dizziness, unsteadiness, and heightened sensitivity to upright posture, motion, and visually complex environments. Several conceptual models have been proposed to explain its persistence, including failure of readaptation after a destabilizing event, maladaptive multisensory integration with excessive visual or somatosensory weighting, and prediction-actual sensory mismatch with amplified prediction errors. This narrative review synthesizes neuroimag

Cross-modal spicy enhancement with odour and electrical tongue stimulation.

Spicy substances like chili pepper and wasabi can have both beneficial and adverse effects on human health. In particular, they may help to reduce salt intake and limit fat absorption, when consumed in appropriate amounts. However, excessive consumption of spicy foods could increase the desire for more intense spiciness, potentially leading to overconsumption. To address the challenge of balancing the amount of spicy substances in food and the desired level of perceived spiciness, electrical tongue stimulation (ETS) has been proposed as a method of sensory enhancement. Although promising, the

Effect of fornix stimulation on acute memory encoding.

The reported memory-related effects of stimulating different nodes within the classical Circuit of Papez have been inconsistent, though the possibility of immediate or chronic memory benefit remains. We undertook memory experiments during deep brain stimulation (DBS) in human subjects with mild, early Alzheimer's disease (2 males, 3 females; n = 5) to rigorously investigate the effects of fornix stimulation on acute memory function. We sought to assess whether some of the reported variability may be attributed to the stimulation protocol and to determine whether stimulation alters memory forma

Discrepancies between subjective and objective olfactory outcomes after FESS in CRSwNP: Predictive factors and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) frequently leads to olfactory dysfunction, prompting patients to seek functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for improvement. However, predicting postoperative outcomes is challenging due to variability in improvement rates and discrepancies between subjective self-assessments and objective olfactory tests. This study aimed to identify preoperative clinical factors associated with discrepancies between subjective and objective postoperative olfactory outcomes, enabling better patient counseling and result prediction. METHODS: Th

Examination of Conditioned Pain Modulation in Myofascial TMD With Consideration of Temporal Summation.

Research on myofascial temporomandibular disorder (mTMD) has often focused on potential dysfunction in endogenous pain modulation. However, studies on the specific inhibitory and facilitatory components of endogenous pain modulation using conditioned pain modulation (CPM) and temporal summation of second pain (TSSP) have shown mixed results. This study aimed to 1) examine whether women with mTMD demonstrated efficient CPM compared to controls; 2) explore the association between independent measures of CPM and TSSP in women with mTMD relative to controls; and 3) determine whether resulting modu

Despite Impaired Binocular Function, Binocular Disparity Integration Across the Visual Field Is Spared in Normal Aging and Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To examine how binocularly asymmetric glaucomatous visual field damage affects binocular disparity processing across the visual field. METHODS: We recruited 18 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, 16 age-matched controls, and 13 young controls. Participants underwent standard clinical assessments of binocular visual acuity, binocular contrast sensitivity, stereoacuity, and perimetry. We employed a previously validated psychophysical procedure to measure how sensitivity to binocular disparity varied across spatial frequencies and visual field sectors (i.e., with full-field stimu
