Toluidine blue O photosensitizer combined with caffeic acid improves antibacterial performance by increasing the permeability of cell membrane.

Photodynamic therapy has always been an antibacterial tool for solving multi-drug resistant bacteria problem, but the side effects and the low efficiency due to the high aggregation and low solubility of photosensitizers limit its application. Due to the anti-inflammatory effect of caffeic acid, two novel photosensitizers (CA-1-TBO, CA-TBO) were synthesized by conjugating caffeic acid with toluidine blue O (TBO). The structures have been characterized by 1HNMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectra and the octanol-water partition coefficient of two p

Possible Roles of Transition Metal Cations in the Formation of Interstellar Benzene via Catalytic Acetylene Cyclotrimerization.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous interstellar molecules. However, the formation mechanisms of PAHs and even the simplest cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, benzene, are not yet fully understood. Recently, we reported the statistical and dynamical properties in the reaction mechanism of Fe+-catalyzed acetylene cyclotrimerization, whereby three acetylene molecules are directly converted to benzene. In this study, we extended our previous work and explored the possible role of the complex of other 3d transition metal cations, TM+ (TM = Sc, Ti, Mn, Co, and Ni), as a catalyst in ace

Sublimation-based wafer-scale monolayer WS2 formation via self-limited thinning of few-layer WS2.

Atomically-thin monolayer WS2 is a promising channel material for next-generation Moore's nanoelectronics owing to its high theoretical room temperature electron mobility and immunity to short channel effect. The high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of the monolayer WS2 also makes it highly promising for future high-performance optoelectronics. However, the difficulty in strictly growing monolayer WS2, due to its non-self-limiting growth mechanism, may hinder its industrial development because of the uncontrollable growth kinetics in attaining the high uniformity in thickness and property

Metal-free catalysis for the reaction of nitrogen dioxide dimer with phenol: An unexpected favorable source of nitrate and aerosol precursors in vehicle exhaust.

Atmospheric reaction mechanism and dynamics of phenol with nitrogen dioxide dimer were explored by the density functional theory and high-level quantum chemistry combined with statistical kinetic calculations within 220-800 K. The nitric acid and phenyl nitrite, the typical aerosol precursors, are the preponderant products because of the low formation free energy barrier (∼8.7 kcal/mol) and fast rate constants (∼10-15 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298 K). Phenyl nitrate is the minor product and it would be also formed from the transformation of phenyl nitrite in NO2-rich environment. More importantly,

Effects of ultra-weak fractal electromagnetic signals on the aqueous phase in living systems: a test-case analysis of molecular rejuvenation markers in fibroblasts.

Skin aging is primarily associated with the alterations in dermal extracellular matrix, in particular a decrease in collagen type-1 content. Recent studies have shown that collagen-degrading matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-1) is produced by fibroblasts in response to chronoaging, which in human dermal fibroblasts leads to the release of proinflammatory cytokines. Past studies showed that anti-inflammatory capabilities could be induced via non-chemical means. One of these methods makes use of ultra-weak fractal electromagnetic (uwf-EM) signals. Such ultra-/very-low frequency (U/VLF) signals (few

Water-Stable 1D Hybrid Tin(II) Iodide Emits Broad Light with 36% Photoluminescence Quantum Efficiency.

The optical and light emission properties of tin and lead halide perovskites are remarkable because of the robust room-temperature (RT) performance, broad wavelength tunability, high efficiency, and good quenching resistance to defects. These highly desirable attributes promise to transform current light-emitting devices, phosphors, and lasers. One disadvantage in most of these materials is the sensitivity to moisture. Here, we report a new air-stable one-dimensional (1D) hybrid lead-free halide material (DAO)Sn2I6 (DAO, 1,8-octyldiammonium) that is resistant to water for more than 15 h. The m

Monitoring graphene oxide's efficiency for removing Re(VII) and Cr(VI) with fluorescent silica hydrogels.

Supported carbon quantum dots (CQDs), used as fluorescent sensors for the detection of metal ions, have rarely been used to remove heavy metals from water. Nitrogen-doped CQDs immobilized in hydrophilic silica hydrogels exhibited a more superior sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Re(VII) and Cr(VI) than other metal ions, including Fe(III), Fe(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Mn(II). For the first time, low limits of detection (LOD) of 2.3 μM for Re(VII) detection and 65 nM for Cr(VI) detection were reported by a facile method. Based on the high selectivity of fluorescent silica hydrogels

Dynamic atomic contributions to infrared intensities of fundamental bands.

Dynamic atomic intensity contributions to fundamental infrared intensities are defined as the scalar products of dipole moment derivative ve … ing to the carbon atom displacement and 40.6 km mol(-1) for both fluorine displacements. Within the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) model differences in atomic polarizations are found to be the most important for explaining the difference in these carbon dynamic intensity contributions. Carbon atom displacements almost completely account for the dif …

The role of molecular structure in the ˙OH initiated atmospheric oxidation of dibutyl ether.

Dibutyl ether (DBE) and its structural isomers are promising oxygenated fuel components owing to their high cetane numbers and clean combustion characteristics. In the present work, the atmospheric degradation of DBE and its structural isomers, n-dibutyl ether (DiNBE), di-isobutyl ether (DiIBE) and sec-dibutyl ether (DiSBE), initiated by ˙OH is investigated using quantum chemical calculations combined with variational transition state theory. The initial H-abstraction reactions initiated by ˙OH were systematically examined at all distinct abstraction sites for each isomer. The activation strai

Mechanistic insight into Metabolic Activation Mechanism of Aniline Disinfection Byproducts catalyzed by P450 Enzymes from Distinct Species: N-hydroxylation Mechanism.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are emerging environmental pollutants generated from reactions between disinfectants and precursor compounds in the water treatment, which pose a serious toxicity effect to the ecological environment and human health. Metabolism, especially by P450 enzymes, is responsible for both the toxification and detoxification of xenobiotics in humans and other organisms. Multidisciplinary theoretical approaches utilizing density functional theory (DFT), quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) are used to inves

Correlating EPR Parameters With Structural Anisotropy in Cu(II) Complexes.

Quantum chemical calculations offer a legitimate interpretation of EPR parameters and thus helps to correlate the geometry and spectral feature of open-shell molecules. Herein, two pseudo-octahedral Cu(II) systems, one with rhombic and the other with axial symmetry, are chosen as representative systems to understand the electronic structure origin of their spectroscopic behavior. The spin Hamiltonian parameters, g-tensor and hyperfine coupling constant, are computed in the platform of the Density Functional and wave function-based theories. Emphasis is given to explain the shift in the free el

Solid- vs. liquid-state thermal decomposition: thermolysis of halogenated benzene derivatives with the 2-nitrodiazene-1-N-oxide moiety.

Melting often accompanies the thermolysis of crystalline organic compounds and brings additional complexity for the thermokinetic analysis of the decomposition process. As a consequence of this, the kinetic data for the thermolysis of particular compounds both in the solid- and liquid-state are rarely reported and often contradict each other. Herein, we proposed a strategy of dealing with the melting with decomposition case for various types of thermoanalytical experiments (DSC and TGA) and temperature programs (both isothermal and non-isothermal). Furthermore, we proposed to study several rel

Optical Spin Angular Momentum: Properties, Topologies, Detection and Applications.

Spin angular momentum is a fundamental dynamical property of elementary particles and fields, playing a critical role in light-matter interactions. In optical studies, the optical spin angular momentum is closely linked to circular polarization. Research on the interaction between optical spin and matter or structures has led to numerous novel optical phenomena and applications, giving rise to the emerging field of spin optics. Historically, researchers primarily focused on longitudinal optical spin aligned parallel to the mean wavevector. In recent years, investigations into the spin-orbit co

Concomitant Enhancement of the Reorientational Dynamics of the BH4 - Anions and Mg2+ Ionic Conductivity in Mg(BH4)2·NH3 upon Ligand Incorporation.

The addition of neutral ligand NH3 is known to increase the Mg2+ ionic conductivity in Mg-(BH4)2·NH3 as compared to the parent compound Mg-(BH4)2. Using inelastic neutron scattering, quasielastic neutron scattering, synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, impedance spectroscopy, and density functional theory, the structure, the dynamics, and the Mg2+ ionic conductivity were investigated. The results show that the introduction of the NH3 ligand not only enhances the Mg2+ ionic conductivity but also significantly increases the reorientational mobility of the BH4 - anions. Thus, the results suggest

Using single and double laser pulses on the molecular Ni4@C48H36 system to design integrated nanospintronic units.

The accomplishment of long-distance spin transfer scenarios between several magnetic centers is a big challenge for building and supporting spin-logic units for developing future all-optical magnetic unit operations. Using high-level quantum chemistry theory CCSD and EOM-CCSD, we systematically study the ultrafast laser-induced spin-dynamics process on a carbon-based material, to which four magnetic centers are attached. We show that the CCSD method with the 6-31G basis set calculation is sensitive to the C-Ni bond length. The spin density distribution, which is computed using EOM-CCSD with La

Intercalation of the anticancer drug lenalidomide into montmorillonite for bioavailability improvement: a computational study.

CONTEXT: Lenalidomide (LEN) is used for the treatment of myeloma blood cancer disease. It has become one of the most efficient drugs to halt this disease. LEN is a low-soluble drug in aqueous media. The search of a pharmaceutical preparation to improve the bioavailability and, therefore, to optimize its efficiency is an important issue for pharmaceutical industries and health care. The use of natural excipients such as montmorillonite (MNT) can provide changes in the physical-chemical properties for improving the bioavailability of this drug. We present the first computational study at the ato

Selective conversion of methane to methanol facilitated by molecular metal-methoxy complexes via a self-correcting chemical cycle.

The controlled oxidation of methane to methanol has been an area of intense research over the past decades. Despite the efforts, the identification of an efficient catalyst with high selectivity is still elusive. Here we propose a thoroughly different strategy employing catalysts containing a metal methoxy unit. This family of catalysts has been used for the activation of C-H bonds but this is the first systematic investigation for the conversion of methane to methanol highlighting the advantages over the typically used metal oxides. Specifically, we start our investigation with an Fe(III) cen

Capturing Dichotomic Solvent Behavior in Solute-Solvent Reactions with Neural Network Potentials.

Simulations of chemical reactivity in condensed phase systems represent an ongoing challenge in computational chemistry, where traditional quantum chemical approaches typically struggle with both the size of the system and the potential complexity of the reaction. Here, we introduce a workflow aimed at efficiently training neural network potentials (NNPs) to explore energy barriers in solution at the hybrid density functional theory level. The computational burden associated with training at the PBE0-D3(BJ) level is bypassed through the use of active and transfer learning techniques, whereas e

The three kingdoms-Photoinduced electron transfer cascades controlled by electronic couplings.

Excited states are the key species in photocatalysis, while the critical parameters that govern their applications are (i) excitation energy, (ii) accessibility, and (iii) lifetime. However, in molecular transition metal-based photosensitizers, there is a design tension between the creation of long-lived excited (triplet), e.g., metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) states and the population of such states. Long-lived triplet states have low spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and hence their population is low. Thus, a long-lived triplet state can be populated but inefficiently. If the SOC is increase
