Six patients, aged between 3 and 51 years, with tuberculosis of the upper cervical spine were studied. Prominent features of the disease included pain and stiffness, paralysis, swelling of the retropharyngeal soft tissue, osteolytic erosions, and atlanto-axial subluxation. Cure was obtained with antibiotics, transoral decompression and C1-2 fusion.

AIM: To systematically review the literature on the clinical presentation and management of pediatric cervical spine tuberculosis (CST) and evaluate the outcomes of conservative or surgical treatment based on anatomical location (craniovertebral junction [CVJ], subaxial, and cervicothoracic junction).
METHOD: We searched for studies reporting the management for pediatric CST published over the past 20 years. The search flow followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocol (PRISMA-P) criteria.
RESULTS: This review included a total of 9 studies with a tot

PURPOSE: Spondylodiscitis is a serious infection of the intervertebral discs and vertebrae, with rising incidence. This study provides an updated evaluation by analyzing causative microorganisms in tuberculous (TS), brucellar (BS), and pyogenic spondylodiscitis (PS). Our findings offer contemporary data to enhance understanding and management of spondylodiscitis.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 109 adult patients diagnosed with spondylodiscitis between 2011 and 2021 at a tertiary research center. Patients were categorized into three groups based on the causative pathogen. Demograph

The case describes a 10-year-old female patient admitted to the Developmental Neurology Clinic due to gait disturbances and lower limb muscle weakness of sudden onset. Neurological examination revealed features of pyramidal syndrome, including hyperreflexia in the lower limbs, spastic paraparesis, and a left-sided Babinski sign. Magnetic resonance imaging findings indicated a pathological fracture of the thoracic 6 vertebral body and a solid pathological lesion at the T5, T6, T7 level. Chest computed tomography identified pathological lymph nodes in the mediastinum. Differential diagnosis for

We present a rare case of a male child in middle childhood who presented to the emergency department with neck pain, neck deformity, low-grade fever, breathing difficulty and swallowing difficulty. The patient had a significant history of weight loss and loss of appetite. On examination, neurological deficits were observed, including mildly increased tone in bilateral lower limbs, reduced power in both lower limbs, exaggerated knee and ankle jerks, and upgoing plantar reflexes. Radiographs and MRI revealed a kyphotic deformity with apex at the T1 vertebra, lytic lesions in seven contiguous ver

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Angular cervical kyphosis and its association with syringomyelia were rarely described. Correcting this kind of deformity from the front is extremely difficult or even impossible. Meanwhile, no study has made a report about correcting angular cervical kyphosis through pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) above C7 because of the special anatomy of the vertebral artery. This is the first case of cervical deformity correction through PSO above C7.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 52-yr-old man who previously underwent debridement, decompression, and skull

BACKGROUND: Sub-occipital Pott's disease is rare, but dangerous.
AIM: To recall diagnostic aspects and spatially the neuroradiological ones of sub-occipital Pott's disease.
METHODS: We describe three patients with sub-occipital Pott's disease followed in our department from 2002 to 2007.
RESULTS: There were two women and one man (mean age at onset: 48 years). The early clinical picture was non specific. Exploration, in addition to standard radiographies included a computerized Tomography (CT) (n=2) and MRI (n=1 and n=3). The diagnosis was confirmed histologically on a biopsy of the abscess

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Isolated tuberculosis (TB) of posterior elements is extremely rare. Only few cases are reported in literature but none described isolated spinous process involvement in the absence of disease process in any other part of the body.
PURPOSE: The authors report a case of isolated tuberculous involvement of C2 spinous process, which to the best of our knowledge, is first such case report.
STUDY DESIGN: A case report of isolated C2 spinous process TB.
METHODS: Sixteen-year-old girl presented with two-month history of slow growing, painless lump at the back of her neck without

This paper presents the anatomy and clinical applications of an iliac crest flap pedicled on the iliolumbar artery. 54 iliolumbar arteries were filled with pink plastic in 27 adult cadavers. Their origin, course and branches, and the surroundings were investigated, and the external diameter, length of segments and terminal distribution were measured. The iliolumbar artery was constant, but with a few variations. Its length was 7.0 +/- 3.9 cm, and the outer diameter 2.0 +/- 0.4 mm at the lateral edge of the psoas major muscle. Based on the anatomic findings, the surgical technique for a bone fl

We present a retrospective follow-up study of 24 patients with spondylitis or spondylodiscitis whose treatment included surgical intervention. Tuberculous spondylitis was diagnosed in 14 patients and 10 suffered from non-specific spondylitis. The average age of the patients was 50.2 years and average follow-up was 3 years. All patients were asymptomatic at the time of examination and showed radiographic evidence of solid fusion. We recommend radical debridement and spinal fusion through a ventral approach in patients with destruction of the ventral vertebral body, progressive neurological impa

A consecutive series of 16 cases of psoas abscess managed over a 10-year period at the Bristol Royal Infirmary is presented. Tuberculosis accounted for 4 patients all normally resident in the United Kingdom. Intraabdominal inflammatory disorders accounted for 9 of the cases with Crohn's disease being the commonest of these with 5 cases. The remaining patients comprised 3 with primary staphylococcal abscesses, one appendicitis, one diverticulitis and 2 with colonic carcinoma. Diagnostic delay was common. Ultrasonography together with guided aspiration of pus was the most useful investigation gi
