Effects of cochlear implants on otolith function as evaluated by vestibulo-ocular reflex and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the insertion of an implant into the cochlea is accompanied by a deterioration in otolith function. Cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP and oVEMP) and linear vestibulo-ocular reflex (lVOR) during eccentric rotation were assessed before and after cochlear implantation (CI) to evaluate otolith function. METHODS: Twelve patients with bilateral severe sensorineural hearing loss who had undergone CI surgery in our hospital between May 2016 and November 2017 were included in this study. cVEMP and oVEMP were ass

Vestibular neuritis: Evaluation and effect of vestibular rehabilitation.

UNLABELLED: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is a caloric vestibular areflexia that occurs suddenly, and whose compensation can take several weeks, sometimes several months. Usually these patients are rehabilitated, but the most affected patients (cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) absent) have a worse prognosis of vestibulo-ocular compensation. Thanks to symptomatic, videographic and posturographic evaluation tools, we objectify and quantify which factors influence the recovery or more accurately the compensation of this type of disorder. EQUIPMENT AND METHOD: We have colligated 34

Objective measures of physical activity in patients with chronic unilateral vestibular hypofunction, and its relationship to handicap, anxiety and postural stability.

OBJECTIVE: Dizziness is one of the most common symptoms in the general population. Patients with dizziness experience balance problems and anxiety, which can lead to decreased physical activity levels and participation in their daily activities. Moreover, recovery of vestibular function from vestibular injury requires physical activity. Although there are reports that decreased physical activity is associated with handicap, anxiety, postural instability and reduced recovery of vestibular function in patients with chronic dizziness, these data were collected by self-report questionnaires. There

Vestibular evoked myogenic potential in noise-induced hearing loss.

Noise affects one's hearing as well as balance mechanism. The hearing mechanism of the noise-exposed individuals has been extensively studied. However, in view of the poor research focus on the sacculo-collic reflexes, especially in this study area, the present study was undertaken to examine the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) in subjects with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). A total of 30 subjects (55 ears) with NIHL participated in the present study within the age range of 30-40 years. VEMP recordings were done at 99 dBnHL using IHS instrument. The results indicated that as t

Development of a vibrotactile tasking device for use in vestibular assessment.

The purpose of this study was to design an automated mental alerting task that could be utilized when performing vestibular testing on a broad range of patient populations, including certain difficult-to-test populations, such as the hard-of-hearing. A device was developed that utilized vibrotactile stimuli output to two vibrators placed on the subject's left leg, and responded to activation of two momentary pushbuttons controlled by the subjects. Fourteen normal-hearing subjects without history or symptoms of vestibular involvement participated. Each participant underwent three mental-alertin

Psychometric Properties of Cognitive-Motor Dual-Task Studies With the Aim of Developing a Test Protocol for Persons With Vestibular Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Patients suffering from vestibular disorders (VD) often present with impairments in cognitive domains such as visuospatial ability, memory, executive function, attention, and processing speed. These symptoms can be attributed to extensive vestibular projections throughout the cerebral cortex and subcortex on the one hand, and to increased cognitive-motor interference (CMI) on the other hand. CMI can be assessed by performing cognitive-motor dual-tasks (DTs). The existing literature on this topic is scarce and varies greatly when it comes to test protocol, type and degree of vestibu

Peripheral vestibular loss detected in pediatric patients using a smartphone-based test of the subjective visual vertical.

INTRODUCTION: Detection of peripheral vestibular loss (PVL) in children with dizziness is an important and challenging task. The static subjective visual vertical (SVV) test can effectively detect PVL, but requires specialized equipment. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy of a smartphone-based SVV test at detecting PVL in pediatric patients. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients between 7 and 18 years old (mean=14.0±2.70) underwent conventional SVV (conv-SVV) and smartphone-based SVV (ip-SVV) testing. Subjects included 6 with PVL (based on clinical history and other vest

Value of otoneurological tests in the staging of multiple sclerosis.

We looked for correlations between otoneurological findings and neurological signs in multiple sclerosis (MS). 41 patients were tested for: spontaneous and caloric nystagmus, horizontal pursuit eye tracking, full-field optokinetic nystagmus and eye movements. The findings were compared with the course of the disease (progressive or remitting), age at onset of MS and disability, in order to test the predictive value of this type of test. The correlation between otoneurological abnormalities and lesion site is very high for brainstem lesions. Subclinical brainstem lesions were detected in 66% of

Effect of Cochlear Implantation on Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials and Wideband Acoustic Immittance.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine if absent air conduction stimuli vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) responses found in ears after cochlear implantation can be the result of alterations in peripheral auditory mechanics rather than vestibular loss. Peripheral mechanical changes were investigated by comparing the response rates of air and bone conduction VEMPs as well as by measuring and evaluating wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) responses in ears with cochlear implants and normal-hearing control ears. The hypothesis was that the presence of a cochlear implant

Lower Functional Connectivity in Vestibular-Limbic Networks in Individuals With Subclinical Agoraphobia.

Background: Agoraphobia was described in 1871 as a condition of fear-related alterations in spatial orientation and locomotor control triggered by places or situations that might cause a patient to panic and feel trapped. In contemporary nosology, however, this original concept of agoraphobia was split into two diagnostic entities, i.e., the modern anxiety disorder of agoraphobia, consisting solely of phobic/avoidant symptoms in public spaces, and the recently defined vestibular disorder of persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD), characterized by dizziness, and unsteadiness exacerbate

Combining vestibular rehabilitation with noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation for treatment of bilateral vestibulopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) has been shown to partly restore vestibular function and to stabilize stance and gait in patients with incomplete bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP). Here, we examined potential synergistic effects of nGVS when combined with standardized vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT). METHODS: 23 patients with confirmed BVP received a 30-min vestibular rehabilitation training (VRT) program three times a week for 2 weeks. The intervention group (n = 12) was stimulated with nGVS (at individually determined optimal amplitudes) during training, wherea
