Mechanisms Underlying the Benefits of Coffee in Postoperative Ileus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Postoperative ileus (POI) is a motility dysfunction associated with inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract after abdominal surgery. Management relies on supportive care, as there is no effective medical treatment. Clinical trials found that coffee consumption improves bowel movement and shortens hospital stays in POI. We aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effect of coffee in an animal model of POI. METHODS: Mouse POI was established by manipulation of the small intestine with wet swab applicators for 5 min. Mice were then treated with w

Optimal control and cost-effectiveness analysis of a network-inspired multihost fascioliasis model.

Fascioliasis is an environmentally mediated zoonotic disease sustained by nonlinear interactions among humans, livestock, freshwater snails, and contaminated aquatic environments. In endemic agricultural settings, transmission is influenced by heterogeneous contact structures arising from clustered village interactions, shared water sources, and livestock movement. A deterministic multihost transmission framework is formulated in which connectivity effects are incorporated through effective transmission coefficients derived from a mean-field approximation of contact structure. The model integr

A drone-based system for sampling airborne bacteria near intensive farms.

BACKGROUND: Bioaerosols, which include airborne bacteria, are a growing concern for public health, especially near intensive farming operations that generate high concentrations of microorganisms. Intensive farms, such as those for cattle, can release potentially pathogenic bacteria into the air, posing risks to nearby communities and farmworkers. Traditional sampling methods are often limited, as they require stationary collection points and can miss key information about how these bioaerosols disperse. To address this issue, this study introduces a proof-of-concept drone-based system designe

Quantifying Interfractional Motion in Patients With Anorectal Cancer During Radiotherapy and Recommendations of Optimal Planning Target Volume Margins.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess pelvic organ motion and volume changes during long-course radiation therapy (LCRT) for anorectal cancer and propose an optimal planning target volume (PTV) margin. METHOD: This retrospective study analysed 526 daily cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) from 22 patients with anorectal cancer undergoing LCRT. Patients followed a bladder-filling protocol by drinking water before treatment. The bladder, rectum and mesorectum were delineated on planning CT and CBCTs. PTV margins were calculated using the van Herk formula, and margins to cover 95% interfract

Spatial Distribution and Temporal Dynamics of Neomycin-Induced Neuromast Cell Damage and Regeneration in the Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus).

Neuromast cells are specialized mechanosensory receptor cells embedded within the lateral line system of aquatic vertebrates, enabling the detection of water movement and vibration that are essential for navigation, prey capture, and predator avoidance. These cells share common evolutionary and functional homology with mammalian inner ear hair cells, both of which rely on stereocilia-mediated mechano-transduction and ion channel activation to convert mechanical stimuli into neural signals. Unlike their mammalian counterparts, neuromast hair cells possess a regenerative capacity following damag

Salmonella and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria recovered from livestock feed components include Escherichia coli ST167 expressing NDM-5 carbapenemase.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, including both pathogens and commensal organisms, can be introduced into livestock populations by a variety of mechanisms including contaminated water, animal and human movement, and animal feed. We hypothesized that animal feed is an important mechanism for introduction of both Salmonella and commensal reservoir bacteria harboring mobile antimicrobial-resistance genes into livestock populations. The identification of high-risk feed components may allow targeted interventions that will reduce carriage of these organisms in food animals and ultimately improve f

Microbial diversity and biogeochemical interactions in the seismically active and CO2- rich Eger Rift ecosystem.

The Eger Rift subsurface is characterized by frequent seismic activity and consistently high CO2 concentrations, making it a unique deep biosphere ecosystem and a suitable site to study the interactions between volcanism, tectonics, and microbiological activity. Pulses of geogenic H2 during earthquakes may provide substrates for methanogenic and chemolithoautotrophic processes, but very little is currently known about the role of subsurface microorganisms and their cellular processes in this type of environment. To assess the impact of geologic activity on microbial life, we analyzed the geolo

Males miss and females forgo: Auditory masking from vessel noise impairs foraging efficiency and success in killer whales.

Understanding how the environment mediates an organism's ability to meet basic survival requirements is a fundamental goal of ecology. Vessel noise is a global threat to marine ecosystems and is increasing in intensity and spatiotemporal extent due to growth in shipping coupled with physical changes to ocean soundscapes from ocean warming and acidification. Odontocetes rely on biosonar to forage, yet determining the consequences of vessel noise on foraging has been limited by the challenges of observing underwater foraging outcomes and measuring noise levels received by individuals. To address

Comparative Effects of Calcium, Boron, and Zinc Inhibiting Physiological Disorders, Improving Yield and Quality of Solanum lycopersicum.

Localized calcium deficiency at the tomato flower end causes a physiological disorder called blossom end rot, resulting in yield losses of up to 50 percent. Fruit cracking is another physiological disorder of tomatoes that most often occurs when the movement of water and solutes to the tomato is protracted or rapid, but the underlying cause of fruit cracking is, again, calcium deficiency. Therefore, the present field experiment was conducted with the aim of increasing yield and reducing physiological disorders in tomatoes with a foliar application of calcium and micronutrients (zinc and boron)

Combined amendment and capping of sediment with ferrihydrite and magnetite to control internal phosphorus release.

This study developed novel active capping systems with recycling convenience using ferrihydrite (Fh) combined with magnetite (Mag), and investigated the effectiveness and mechanism for the restriction of endogenous phosphorus movement from sediment into overlying water (OW) by the combined use of Fh and Mag. The Fh/Mag combined amendment effectively hindered endogenous phosphorus release from sediment to OW in dissolved oxygen (DO)-deficit environment, and the immobilization of diffusion gradient in thin film-labile phosphorus (LPDGT) and mobile phosphorus in the sediment played a key role in

Simplified sewerage to prevent urban leptospirosis transmission: a cluster non-randomised controlled trial protocol in disadvantaged urban communities of Salvador, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is a globally distributed zoonotic and environmentally mediated disease that has emerged as a major health problem in urban slums in developing countries. Its aetiological agent is bacteria of the genus Leptospira, which are mainly spread in the urine of infected rodents, especially in an environment where adequate sanitation facilities are lacking, and it is known that open sewers are key transmission sources of the disease. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness of a simplified sewerage intervention in reducing the risk of exposure to contaminated environ

Toxic effects of four cardiovascular drugs on the development and epigenetics of zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Due to the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, therapeutic drugs such as atenolol (ATE), metoprolol (MET), atorvastatin (ATO), and bezafibrate (BZB) have been widely used and thus frequently detected in surface water at ng·L-1-μg·L-1 level. In this study, the developmental toxicity of these drugs (0.5 μg·L-1-500 μg·L-1) to zebrafish, an aquatic model organism, was investigated; and the epigenetic toxicity of BZB was also explored. For all four drugs, the results showed that the drugs exposure could cause sublethal toxic effects on zebrafish larvae, such as decreases in hatching rate, body l

Application of Oil-in-Water Cannabidiol Emulsion for the Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease with unknown cause. It mainly affects joints and, without proper treatment, negatively impacts their movement, causes painful deformities, and reduces the patients' quality of life. Current treatment options consist of various types of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), however 20-30% of patients are partially resistant to them. Therefore, development of new drugs is necessary. Possible option are compounds exhibiting their action via endocannabinoid system, which plays an important role in pain and inflammati

Melioidosis in Cynomolgus Macaques ( Macaca Fascicularis ) Imported to the United States from Cambodia.

Melioidosis, a potentially fatal infectious disease of humans and animals, including nonhuman primates (NHPs), is caused by the high-consequence pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei. This environmental bacterium is found in the soil and water of tropical regions, such as Southeast Asia, where melioidosis is endemic. The global movement of humans and animals can introduce B. pseudomallei into nonendemic regions of the United States, where environmental conditions could allow establishment of the organism. Approximately 60% of NHPs imported into the United States originate in countries considered

May ultrasonography be considered a useful tool for bedside screening of dysphagia in patients with acute stroke? A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a primary risk factor for pneumonia and affects around 50% of acute stroke patients. Systematic bedside swallowing screening of acute stroke patients is recommended before oral intake. Currently there is lack of comprehensive dysphagia assessment tools with robust good accuracy, clinical utility and cost-effectiveness. An altered hyoid bone movement may represent a major risk factor for aspiration. Ultrasonography quantitatively measures hyoid-larynx approximation, which was found reduced in stroke patients with dysphagia. Although ultrasonography was suggested for ass

Reconsidering the Oxygen-Temperature Hypothesis of Polar Gigantism: Successes, Failures, and Nuance.

"Polar gigantism" describes a biogeographic pattern in which many ectotherms in polar seas are larger than their warmer-water relatives. Although many mechanisms have been proposed, one idea-the oxygen-temperature hypothesis-has received significant attention because it emerges from basic biophysical principles and is appealingly straightforward and testable. Low temperatures depress metabolic demand for oxygen more than supply of oxygen from the environment to the organism. This creates a greater ratio of oxygen supply to demand, releasing polar organisms from oxygen-based constraints on body

Velopharyngeal closure analysis using four-dimensional computed tomography: a pilot study of healthy volunteers and adult patients with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngoscopy is a common method to evaluate velopharyngeal closure in patients with cleft palate. However, insertion of a fiberoptic nasopharyngoscope causes discomfort in patients. The aim of this study was to estimate the reliability of short-time exposure images obtained using 320-row area detector computed tomography (320-ADCT) as a novel evaluation method for the assessment of velopharyngeal function. METHODS: We evaluated five healthy adult volunteers and five postoperative adult patients with cleft palate. During a 3.3-s imaging exposure, the participants were asked to
