Factors Contributing to Anthrax Outbreaks in the Circumpolar North.

A 2016 outbreak of anthrax on the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia that led to the culling of more than two hundred thousand reindeer and killed one human, resulted in significant media interests and in the reporting was often linked to thawing permafrost and ultimately climate change. Here, we review the historic context of anthrax outbreaks in the circumpolar North and explore alternative explanations for the anthrax outbreak in Western Siberia. Further, we propose a convergence model where multiple factors likely contributed to the outbreak of anthrax, including an expanded population and discont

New title: Re-evaluating environmental associations with meningitis risk across Africa.

BACKGROUND: Previous analytical work, defining the distribution of meningitis epidemics in Africa is over 20 years old, with climate change representing an ongoing issue. We aim to update this analysis and determine if the meningitis belt geography and associated environmental risk factors have changed in the last two decades. METHODS: Epidemic bacterial meningitis data from 2003-2022 were provided by WHO-AFRO. Districts across Africa were coded 1 if they experienced a meningitis outbreak and 0 if not. Monthly means of windspeed, rainfall, dust, and humidity were processed into climatic profi

Modelling tick abundance and environmental suitability in meso-Mediterranean landscapes for the prevention of tick-borne diseases.

Ticks are ectoparasites of high sanitary relevance because they host and transmit a multitude of pathogens to vertebrates. A comprehensive understanding of their distribution and abundance is essential for the implementation of effective measures to prevent tick-borne pathogen transmission and tick-borne disease occurrence. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the most environmentally suitable areas and the spatial variation in abundance of exophilic ticks in Castilla-La Mancha (CLM), a highly environmentally diverse meso-Mediterranean region in south-central Spain, where Crimean-Congo haem

A Systematic Review on Modeling Methods and Influential Factors for Mapping Dengue-Related Risk in Urban Settings.

Dengue fever is an acute mosquito-borne disease that mostly spreads within urban or semi-urban areas in warm climate zones. The dengue-related risk map is one of the most practical tools for executing effective control policies, breaking the transmission chain, and preventing disease outbreaks. Mapping risk at a small scale, such as at an urban level, can demonstrate the spatial heterogeneities in complicated built environments. This review aims to summarize state-of-the-art modeling methods and influential factors in mapping dengue fever risk in urban settings. Data were manually extracted fr

Clustering climate and management practices to define environmental challenges affecting gastrointestinal parasitism in Katahdin sheep.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) negatively affect the performance and well-being of sheep. Due to anthelmintic resistance, GIN are difficult to control leading producers to choose breeds that can exhibit resistance to parasitism. An example is Katahdin sheep. Katahdins are raised in various climates and management systems in the United States. These environmental factors can be combined to form eco-management groupings or clusters. We hypothesized that GIN challenge varies predictably based on the characteristics of these environmental clusters. Forty Katahdin producers from across the United

A harmonized global prediction of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon in freshwater systems using optical indices and machine learning.

Biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) is the most reactive fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and a major driver of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from inland waters, yet its large-scale assessment is constrained by incubation-based measurements. This study conducted a global meta-analysis integrating harmonized BDOC observations, optical DOM indices, and machine-learning (ML) modeling to enable scalable BDOC prediction across freshwater systems. A total of 1063 paired observations were compiled from 17 studies across eight countries, with cross-study comparability improved thr

Integrating AI and climate change scenarios for multi-risk assessment in the coastal municipalities of the Veneto region.

Global climate is experiencing exceptional warming, leading to a rise in extreme events worldwide. Coastal regions are particularly vulnerable to climate change (CC), due to dense populations, interconnected economies, and fragile ecosystems. These areas face escalating risks as CC intensifies the severity and frequency of extreme weather phenomena, like heavy precipitation, sea-level rise (SLR), storm surges. Integrated approaches are crucial to assess the combined impacts of atmospheric and marine hazards at the land-sea interface. Machine Learning (ML) offer innovative solutions to analyse

Isotopic Constraints on SO2 Oxidation Rates and Their Potential Relationship with Sulfate Formation Pathways in the Planetary Boundary Layer.

Natural and anthropogenic emissions of sulfur-bearing species significantly alter the sulfur and energy budgets of the Earth's atmosphere. Simulations of the atmospheric sulfur cycle, sulfate radiative forcing, and predictions of their future changes require a precise understanding of the SO2 oxidation rates that control the formation of secondary sulfate aerosols. Given the unique single source of radiosulfur (cosmogenic 35S radionuclide), combined measurements of atmospheric radiosulfur in both sulfur dioxide (35SO2) and sulfate (35SO4 2-) have been employed to constrain sulfur oxidation rat

Influence of climate on desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskål, 1775) Plague and migration prediction in tropics.

The outbreak of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria Forskål, 1775, which originated from the Horn of Africa in 2019-2020 created an episodic plague under bio-geographical settings in the arid and semi-arid areas of South and Southwest Asia. In India, it happened after twenty-seven years due to the persistence of a few favourable conditions caused by its plague, resulting in hundreds of crores in crop damage. Keeping this in mind, the study aims to assess the suitability and likelihood of the desert locust epidemic occurring in India, utilizing two widely recognized statistical models: Weig

A Spatio-temporal Model of African Animal Trypanosomosis Risk.

BACKGROUND: African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) is a major constraint to sustainable development of cattle farming in sub-Saharan Africa. The habitat of the tsetse fly vector is increasingly fragmented owing to demographic pressure and shifts in climate, which leads to heterogeneous risk of cyclical transmission both in space and time. In Burkina Faso and Ghana, the most important vectors are riverine species, namely Glossina palpalis gambiensis and G. tachinoides, which are more resilient to human-induced changes than the savannah and forest species. Although many authors studied the distribu

Hygroscopic salts and the potential for life on Mars.

Hygroscopic salts have been detected in soils in the northern latitudes of Mars, and widespread chloride-bearing evaporitic deposits have been detected in the southern highlands. The deliquescence of hygroscopic minerals such as chloride salts could provide a local and transient source of liquid water that would be available for microorganisms on the surface. This is known to occur in the Atacama Desert, where massive halite evaporites have become a habitat for photosynthetic and heterotrophic microorganisms that take advantage of the deliquescence of the salt at certain relative humidity (RH)

A hybrid Monte Carlo simulation risk model for oil exploration projects.

A new 3-D Hybrid Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) Risk Model is proposed in this study. The wind, wave, current, climate change, and tsunami sub-models of the Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Transport and Water Quality Model HYDROTAM-3D are interrelated with MCS, to obtain probability distributions for the simulation of environmental conditions. This is the only model that can incorporate the tsunami, storm, and sea level rise risks in oil exploration projects. The spill risk index (SRI) of 50 blue barrels spilled due to a blowout from the rig/port during fuel supply was circa 1 ton/ship as Tier I

A novel model in predicting dengue fever considering spatial heterogeneity of nine impact factors and four AI algorithms in China.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have explored the relationships between dengue fever (DF) and its impact factors, using various models. However, few have considered the spatial heterogeneity of these relationships in simulating DF variations. METHODS: This study analyzed monthly DF incidence and rate data across 34 provincial-level administrative divisions (PLADs) in China from 2004 to 2019, along with climatic and socioeconomic variables. Nine impact factors were included: six climatic variables - minimum temperature (Tmin), mean temperature (Tmean), maximum temperature (Tmax), relative humidit

Wheat Rust Diseases: Global Impact, Integrated Disease Management, and Emerging Biotechnological Innovations for Sustainable Crop Protection.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) remains one of the most important staple crops worldwide and serves as a primary source of calories and protein for billions of people. Global wheat production, however, continues to be threatened by rust diseases caused by Puccinia triticina, Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici and Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici. These pathogens are highly adaptive and frequently give rise to new virulent races, causing resistance in wheat cultivars to breakdown. Under favorable environmental conditions, severe epidemics can develop and substantial yield losses may occur. In res

Spatial patterns and drivers of temperature sensitivity of winter evergreen vegetation on the Tibetan Plateau.

Climate warming has enhanced the winter greenness of evergreen vegetation on the Tibetan Plateau over the past 20 years. This response is primarily determined by the temperature sensitivity of vegetation, rather than the absolute extent of warming. However, how these factors shape the spatial patterns of sensitivity of vegetation to temperature (abbreviated as vegetation sensitivity) remains poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the spatial pattern of vegetation sensitivity and its driving factors by using partial least squares regression, pixel-scale multiple linear regression, zone-l

Distribution of urinary stone composition and its associations with age, sex, and temporal factors among 3901 patients in Xiamen: A 13-year single-center retrospective study.

Regional climate and lifestyle are key drivers of urolithiasis, yet long-term data from subtropical coastal regions in China are limited. This study investigated the epidemiological characteristics and dynamic age-sex associations of stone composition in Xiamen, a major maritime city in Southern China. We analyzed 3901 patients with urolithiasis at a tertiary center between March 2012 and June 2025. Stone components were identified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Beyond standard categorical analysis, we employed restricted cubic spline (RCS) models to describe the precise nonlin

Impact of heatwave exposure on chronic kidney disease risk among middle-aged and older adults: evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a major global public health concern. The increasing morbidity of extreme heat events, attributed to global climate change, may pose a substantial risk to renal health. Nonetheless, the body of evidence examining the relationship between heatwave exposure and CKD remains sparse, especially among middle-aged and older demographic groups. METHODS: This study employed data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, analyzing information from 6,718 participants aged 45 years and older during the follow-up period from 2011 to 2015.

The contrary short-term influence of heatwaves on Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis in Singapore - A national time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis are driven by climate variability and are among the most important causes of foodborne disease globally. Studies have largely reported positive associations between ambient air temperature and these diseases. However, those investigating how heatwaves influence these bacterial infections are few and inconsistent. I examined the short-term influence of heatwaves on these bacterial infections in the tropical city-state of Singapore. METHODS: All national reports of Salmonellosis and Campylobacteriosis in Singapore were analysed in negative binomi
