[Effects and significance of specific spelling problems in young adults--empirical studies in an epidemiologic patient sample].

OBJECTIVE: With reference to an epidemiological sample of adolescents and young adults the impact of different models on the number of children classified as having specific spelling problems is investigated. METHOD: Using the same set of data, the effect of alternative definitions and methodological procedures on the prevalence of specific spelling retardation is shown. The virtual consequences of various norm-orientated definitions of cases is discussed with reference to external empirical criteria. RESULTS: Particularly, obsolete norms lead to a large overestimation of cases. In the prese

Aluminum and renal osteodystrophy.

Evidence has emerged over the last several years indicating that aluminum accumulation in patients with chronic renal failure can cause certain forms of renal osteodystrophy, in particular osteomalacia and an aplastic lesion. The lines of evidence include epidemiological associations, chemical measurement and histological staining of bone aluminum, animal models of aluminum loading, and a favorable response to the removal of aluminum by chelation therapy. The primary sources of aluminum are dialysate solutions prepared from water with a high aluminum content and the oral ingestion of aluminum-

The dynamics of tetanus epidemiology and control in rural Uttar Pradesh studied through computer simulation.

An epidemiological model is constructed for tetanus. The assumptions as well as the steps involved in the construction of the model, are detailed. The impact of alternate immunisation strategies to control tetanus in rural Uttar Pradesh, is studied using this model. The quantification of the expected decline in incidence and mortality over 30 years, for different control strategies, provides the health planner with valuable information. It is seen that the incidence of tetanus neonatorum and tetanus in adults, as well as deaths due to tetanus, progressively decreases as the level of coverage i

Automated identification of Salmonella serotype using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and machine learning techniques.

UNLABELLED: Salmonella serotyping is essential for epidemiological studies and clinical treatment guidance. However, traditional serological agglutination methods are time-consuming, technically complex, and difficult to adopt at scale. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a rapid and cost-effective microbial identification technique, but it cannot be used to differentiate Salmonella serotypes. This study aims to integrate MALDI-TOF MS with machine learning algorithms to develop and validate a model for Salmonella serotype identificatio

Challenges in operationalizing conceptual models in aetiological research.

Conceptual or theoretical models are crucial in developing causal hypotheses and interpreting study findings, but they have been underused and misused in aetiological research, particularly in dentistry and oral epidemiology. Good models should incorporate updated evidence and clarify knowledge gaps to derive logical hypotheses. Developing models and deriving testable hypotheses in operational models can be challenging, as seen in the four examples referred to in this commentary. One challenge concerns the theoretical validity of the model, while another relates to difficulties in operationali

Predicting measles elimination through surveillance-response and health system determinants: a village-level structural equation modeling study in Cirebon Regency, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: Measles elimination remains a major public health challenge despite the widespread availability of effective vaccines. Rising outbreaks in some countries suggest that high immunization coverage alone may not be enough to stop transmission. However, evidence remains limited regarding how surveillance-response, health system capacity, nutritional status, and community vulnerability interact to influence measles elimination within a single epidemiological framework. This study aimed to develop and validate an integrated epidemiological prediction model for measles elimination using st

Applications of mixture methods in epidemiological studies investigating the health impact of persistent organic pollutants exposures: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are environmental chemicals characterized by long half-lives in nature and human bodies, posing significant health risks. The concept of the exposome, encompassing all lifetime environmental exposures, underscores the importance of studying POP as mixtures rather than in isolation. The increasing body of evidence on the health impacts of POP mixtures necessitates the proper application of statistical methods. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to summarize studies on the overall effects of POP mixtures, identify patterns in applications of mixture methods-st

Diet, Metabolism and Synaptic Function: Integrating Evidence Across Models in Neurodegeneration Research.

The brain has a higher energy demand per unit weight than any other organ in the body; however, links between metabolism, diet and neurological function have historically been underexplored. This partly stems from early assumptions that brain metabolism is primarily dependent on glucose and ketone bodies, whereas more recent evidence indicates broader metabolic flexibility and complex cell-type specialisation. In the past few decades, brain metabolism has become increasingly recognised as relevant to neurological and mental health, and many neurodegenerative disorders are accompanied by change

Anti-Dengue IgG Seroprevalence and Exposure-Related Risk in Italian Military Personnel Deployed on Overseas Missions: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Dengue virus infection remains a significant public health challenge in endemic regions, with growing evidence of autochthonous transmission in Europe. Assessing serological exposure in high-risk populations such as military personnel deployed to endemic areas is essential to quantify exposure risk and support operational decision-making, particularly regarding pre-deployment counselling and risks associated with secondary infection. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 1355 members of the Italian Armed Forces, measuring anti-dengue IgG antibodies by ELISA and collecting data on depl

Differences in overall survival for invasive epithelial ovarian cancer by race and ethnicity: results from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have examined survival in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC); however, few consider race and ethnicity, particularly disaggregating Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander women. METHODS: We analysed data from 18 Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium studies, including women with EOC from Asian (n = 697), non-Hispanic Black (n = 267), Hispanic (n = 492), Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (n = 98) and non-Hispanic White (n = 12,998) racial and ethnic groups. We ran Cox proportional hazards models estimating overall survival by race and ethnicity, adjustin

Variable Selection in Multistate Models for Correlated Data With Application in a COVID-19 Vaccination Study.

Depicting patient transitions among multiple clinical states is a common objective in health services and epidemiological research. Multistate models (MSM) are the primary analytical approach used in such studies. Although the structure of an MSM is typically determined by the research questions of a specific application, models are typically complex, with multiple transition paths and a large number of parameters. This complexity introduces computational and numerical challenges in parameter estimation and scientific difficulties in model interpretation. Compounding these issues is the inhere

The silent intruders: Cardiovascular and pregnancy-related health effects of ultrafine particulate matter.

Ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) is an increasingly important airborne pollutant with distinct physicochemical properties that may enhance its biological reactivity and cardiovascular toxicity. This review provides a critical mechanistic synthesis of current evidence linking UFPM exposure to cardiovascular injury, with particular emphasis on pregnancy-related cardiovascular disorders. Evidence from experimental models, controlled human-exposure studies, and epidemiological investigations indicates that UFPM may contribute to cardiovascular dysfunction through interconnected pathways involvi

Socioeconomic determinants of protective behaviors and contact patterns in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era: A cross-sectional study in Italy.

Socioeconomic inequalities significantly influence infectious disease outcomes, as seen with COVID-19, but the pathways through which socioeconomic conditions affect transmission dynamics remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a survey representative of the Italian population, stratified by age, gender, geographical area, city size, employment status, and education level. The survey's final aim was to estimate differences in contact and protective behaviors across various population strata, both of which are crucial for understanding transmission dynamics. Our initial insights based on

Leptin/PPARγ interaction mediates obesity-driven Th17 differentiation in rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder, with some studies suggesting that obesity may increase the risk of developing RA. However, the relationship between obesity and RA is complex, involving both epidemiological associations and, paradoxically, protective effects. The exact role of obesity in RA pathophysiology remains controversial. In this study, we investigated the impact of obesity on RA progression, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of immune regulation mediated by the adipokine leptin. We examined obese RA patients and employed high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity

Seasonal Variation of Use of Common Psychedelics and Party Drugs Among Nightclub/Festival Attendees in New York City.

Few epidemiological studies have focused on seasonal variation in the use of common psychedelics and party drugs among nightclub and festival attendees, typically those who attend electronic dance music (EDM) events. We sought to determine whether the use of different drug types varies seasonally within this population. Across 15 seasons from summer 2017 through fall 2022, we surveyed 3,935 adults entering randomly selected nightclubs and festivals in New York City regarding their past-month use of cocaine, MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy), lysergic acid diet
