The ecological characteristics of Anopheles mosquitoes associated with low malaria transmission in Siwa oasis, Egypt.

The ecology of Anopheles sergentii and An. multicolor was investigated over eight months to examine the entomological factors maintaining the low Plasmodium vivax transmission in Siwa oasis. The two species were encountered as larvae while the dominant species, Anopheles sergentii was also collected as adults. Breeding sites were characterized for the two species in six localities. Larvae of both species were common during June and November. In Bahi El Din as an indicator village with a higher endemicity, An. sergentii females were endophilic but more common inside animal sheds than in houses,

The chemotherapy of onchocerciasis. XIII. Studies with ivermectin in onchocerciasis patients in northern Ghana, a region with long lasting vector control.

One hundred and ninety eight patients with moderate to heavy infections with Onchocerca volvulus were randomly assigned to receive single doses of 100, 150 or 200 mcg/kg of ivermectin or matching placebo capsules. Detailed systemic, ocular and parasitological examinations were carried out at intervals over a period of one year. Nodules were excised twelve months after treatment to evaluate the effect of the treatment with ivermectin in adult O. volvulus. The three ivermectin-treated groups produced massive reductions in skin microfilariae (over 97%) with low levels being maintained over one ye

Advances in semiochemicals of the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, and its application in pest management.

The sweet potato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius, is one of the most destructive pests of sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas L., across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The concealed feeding habits of larvae and the nocturnal activity of adults render conventional chemical-based control largely ineffective. Semiochemical-based management, especially the use of female-produced sex pheromone, has emerged as a promising strategy for integrated pest management (IPM) for this pest insect. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the chemical ecology of C. formicarius, including the id

Exploring the Scope and Status of Biological Interventions in Malaria Control.

Malaria is a major health concern worldwide, with an estimated 282 million infections and 610,000 deaths in 2024. Plasmodium parasites, spread by female Anopheles mosquitoes, are the cause. Several interventions, such as indoor residual spraying, insecticide-treated bed nets, and antimalarial drugs, have reduced transmission; however, challenges such as insecticide resistance, environmental concerns, and climate change have led to the exploration of alternative approaches. To address these limitations, biological control, which involves the use of natural organisms and biological agents to tar

A Stellera chamaejasme-derived multifunctional biocomposite with antibacterial, mosquito-repellent, and biodegradable properties.

The increasing threat of healthcare-associated infections and mosquito-borne diseases demands new materials that combine antimicrobial protection, insect repellency, and biocompatibility. Here, we convert Stellera chamaejasme L. (SC), an ecologically harmful invasive weed, into a multifunctional biocomposite (SCZrB/WPU) by integrating SC root fibers, bamboo waste, zirconium phosphate (ZrP), and waterborne polyurethane (WPU). The resulting material exhibits >99.99% antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli, and >89.5% repellency against Aedes albopictus. It releases only 0.14 mg L-1

Knockdown of LmSPARC influences lipid metabolic homeostasis involved ovarian development in Locusta migratoria.

Reproduction, a fundamental feature of all known life, is closely correlated with energy homeostasis. Lipids, which can accumulate, provide essential energy support for reproduction. Secreted Protein, Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC) is a cellular matrix glycoprotein involved in the regulation of extracellular matrix synthesis. However, the precise coordination of lipid homeostasis by SPARC during insect reproductive development remains poorly understood. Our study revealed that when the expression of LmSPARC was downregulated by RNA interference (RNAi) in 4th and 5th instar nymphs, molting

Dual stimuli-responsive carbon dioxide based polymer nanoparticles for smart pesticide delivery controlled by temperature and glutathione.

Stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery systems play a crucial role in enhancing pesticide utilization efficiency while minimizing environmental pollution. In this study, a novel poly(propylene oxide-co‑carbon dioxide-co-allyl glycidyl ether)-S-S-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PPAG-SS-PNIPAM) was developed for controlled pesticide delivery. The PPAG-SS-PNIPAM could self-assemble into uniform nanoparticles with an average size of 156.2 nm in aqueous solution. Using avermectin (AVE) as a model herbicide, we demonstrated the system's potential as a controlled-release pesticide platform (AVE@PPAG-SS-P

Generation and Evaluation of Recombinant Baculovirus Coexpressing GP5 and M Proteins of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Type 1.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is the pathogen of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, which is one of the most economically devastating diseases of the swine industry. However, whether the inactivated vaccine and modified live attenuated vaccines are effective in disease control is still controversial. Although several groups developed PRRSV virus-like particles (VLPs) as a vaccine against PRRSV, all these VLP-based vaccines targeted PRRSV-2, but not PRRSV-1 or both. Therefore, it is urgent to produce VLPs against PRRSV-1. In this study, we rescued r

Establishment of a Standardized Vaccine Protocol for the Analysis of Protective Immune Responses During Experimental Trypanosome Infections in Mice.

To date, trypanosomosis control in humans and animals is achieved by a combination of parasitological screening and treatment. While this approach has successfully brought down the number of reported T. b. gambiense Human African Trypanosomosis (HAT) cases, the method does not offer a sustainable solution for animal trypanosomosis (AT). The main reasons for this are (i) the worldwide distribution of AT, (ii) the wide range of insect vectors involved in transmission of AT, and (iii) the existence of a wildlife parasite reservoir that can serve as a source for livestock reinfection. Hence, in or

Evaluation of RbCl and CrCl₃ as markers of Triatoma brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) nymphs: persistence and influence of Rb and Cr on triatomine biology.

In order to mark Triatoma brasiliensis, the vector of Chagas disease in Brazil, two chemical compounds, rubidium chloride (RbCl) and chromium chloride (CrCl₃), were tested. First, 199 N2-N5 nymphs were fed on blood with 0.025M RbCl. Rb marker positivity ranged from 2.5% (N3)-70% (N2), with a maximum persistence of 98 days. Second, 265 N2-N5 nymphs were fed on blood containing 0.0015M CrCl₃. Cr marker positivity ranged up to 93% (N5), with a maximum persistence of 119 days. Finally, we blood fed 213 T. brasiliensis to investigate whether CrCl₃ altered the biology of this insect. The development

Observations on rift valley fever virus and vaccines in Egypt.

Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV, genus: Phlebovirus, family: Bunyaviridae), is an arbovirus which causes significant morbidity and mortality in animals and humans. RVFV was introduced for the first time in Egypt in 1977. In endemic areas, the insect vector control and vaccination is considering appropriate measures if applied properly and the used vaccine is completely safe and the vaccination programs cover all the susceptible animals. Egypt is importing livestock and camels from the African Horn & the Sudan for human consumption. The imported livestock and camels were usually not vaccinated ag

Evaluation of Eosin-Methylene Blue as a Photosensitizer for Larval Control of Aedes aegypti by a Photodynamic Process.

Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) is a competent vector for transmitting important viral diseases such as yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Several strategies have been applied to avoid Ae. aegypti proliferation by using environmental management, biological, and chemical approaches. However, the development of new methods for effective control of the insect vector population is still needed. Photodynamic control is an alternative way to control the vector population by using a physical approach based on the larval phototoxicity of a photosensitizer. In this context, the present study eval

Ricinine toxicity in susceptible lepidoptera involves perturbations in β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide metabolism.

Ricinine, a plant-derived alkaloid, exhibits potent insecticidal activity; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying its differential toxicity among insect species remain largely elusive. This study employed integrated metabolomics and transcriptomics to investigate the adaptation strategies of three lepidopteran insects with distinct host plant ranges-Bombyx mori (B. mori), Spodoptera litura (S. litura), and Samia cynthia ricini (S. cynthia ricini) to ricinine. The three species exhibited sharply divergent toxicological responses: ricinine caused acute lethality in B. mori, severely inhibi

Bioinspired additive manufacturing material optimization for increased stiffness and improved strain sensing in robotic limbs.

Robots traversing uneven terrain may require precise calculation of limb kinematics (e.g. foot position from joint angles and segment dimensions) and sensing of force for adaptive walking control. To facilitate these calculations, robots often have very rigid limb segments with a stiff load cell between the limb and end effector (e.g. foot). Insects also must compute kinematics and measure force when walking, but sense forces quite differently, using strain sensors embedded in their exoskeletons distributed across their legs to infer force. Due to this configuration, more rigid leg segments wo

Molecular evidence for a functional ecdysone signaling system in Brugia malayi.

BACKGROUND: Filarial nematodes, including Brugia malayi, the causative agent of lymphatic filariasis, undergo molting in both arthropod and mammalian hosts to complete their life cycles. An understanding of how these parasites cross developmental checkpoints may reveal potential targets for intervention. Pharmacological evidence suggests that ecdysteroids play a role in parasitic nematode molting and fertility although their specific function remains unknown. In insects, ecdysone triggers molting through the activation of the ecdysone receptor: a heterodimer of EcR (ecdysone receptor) and USP

Influence of dengue virus serotypes on the abundance of Aedes aegypti insect-specific viruses (ISVs).

A comprehensive understanding of the virome in mosquito vectors is crucial for assessing the potential transmission of viral agents, designing effective vector control strategies, and advancing our knowledge of insect-specific viruses (ISVs). In this study, we utilized Oxford Nanopore Technologies metagenomics to characterize the virome of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes collected in various regions of Colombia, a country hyperendemic for dengue virus (DENV). Analyses were conducted on groups of insects with previous natural DENV infection (DENV-1 and DENV-2 serotypes), as well as mosquito samples th

Windthrow causes declines in carbohydrate and phenolic concentrations and increased monoterpene emission in Norway spruce.

With the increasing frequencies of extreme weather events caused by climate change, the risk of forest damage from insect attacks grows. Storms and droughts can damage and weaken trees, reduce tree vigour and defence capacity and thus provide host trees that can be successfully attacked by damaging insects, as often observed in Norway spruce stands attacked by the Eurasian spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. Following storms, partially uprooted trees with grounded crowns suffer reduced water uptake and carbon assimilation, which may lower their vigour and decrease their ability to defend again

Abundant triatomines in Texas dog kennel environments: Triatomine collections, infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, and blood feeding hosts.

Triatomine insects are vectors of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi- the causative agent of Chagas disease. Chagas disease is endemic to Latin America and the southern United States and can cause severe cardiac damage in infected mammals, ranging from chronic disease to sudden death. Identifying interactions among triatomines, T. cruzi discrete typing units (DTUs), and blood feeding hosts is necessary to understand parasite transmission dynamics and effectively protect animal and human health. Through manual insect trapping efforts, kennel staff collections, and with the help of a train
